Though the three lectures given by Paul Muldoon as Ireland Professor of Poetry focus on three former holders of the chair - John Montague, Michael Longley, and Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill - they also touch on a dizzying range of topics including David Byrne, Claddagh Records, decapitation, The Destruction of Da Derga's Hostel, factory farming, Pierce Ferriter, incest among royals, Ivar the Boneless, James Joyce's "The Dead", Carl Jung, long addition, the Royston crow, Section 21 of the Broadcasting Act of Ireland, The Story of Mac Datho's Pig, The Voyage of Muldoon, war crimes by major poets, and the overly excitable Warren Zevon. The Ireland Chair of Poetry was established in 1998 following the award of the Nobel Prize of Literature to Seamus Heaney and is supported by Queen's University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Arts Council An Chomhairle Ealaion. Other poets in the series include Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, John Montague, Paul Durcan, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Michael Longley, Harry Clifton and Paula Meehan.

In the autumn of 1835, as the Orange Order faced a parliamentary inquiry and the imminent prospect of being banned, an 'Old Orangeman', signing himself 'Montanus', wrote a series of articles defending the Orange brethren and telling their story. Almost forgotten since first publication, these articles together form a unique and intelligent view from inside the Order in its first cycle. Montanus discusses the Orangemen's self-organisation by the Protestant peasantry of County Armagh in 1795, their struggle against the United Irishmen, dissensions over the Act of Union, feuding with the Catholic nationalist Ribbon Society, extraordinary influence on the government of Ireland and their last-ditch opposition to Daniel O'Connell's campaign for Catholic Emancipation.Old Orangeman was a product of eighteenth-century Enlightened thought and became an eloquent warning voice against the perils of toleration and liberalism. He had been associated with the Order from its birth. He knew both its leading men and their deadly enemies, including Theobald Wolfe Tone. Most striking, perhaps, is Old Orangeman's carefully argued justification of the Order as a timely and irreplaceable bulwark against the rising tide of democracy and radicalism. These 'Letters from an Old Orangeman' are not just a personal memoir or a one-sided history, but a carefully argued political treatise on the necessity of mobilising and organising the 'reactionary democracy' in an age of popular politics. Their republication now is an important contribution not only to the history of sectarian discord in Ulster and Ireland. It supplies an important source for the study of popular conservatism and the psychology of counter-revolution in the United Kingdom and beyond.Montanus feared that he, who had 'rocked the cradle' of the Institution, might now be fated to 'follow its hearse'. His letters instead provide an unrivalled insight into one of Ireland's most tenacious and consequential survivals.

Gearoid Mor, 'the Great Earl of Kildare', or simply Gerald Fitzgerald, has been, historiographically speaking, a great deceiver: and has paid for his deception in similar currency. Over time regarded as 'the uncrowned King of Ireland', his was a reputation which he himself would not have recognised, or indeed have welcomed. He was the 8th earl of Kildare, the inheritor of a grand line of feudal dynastic succession, that had been, despite regular obstacles and set-backs, steadily expanding its power, and (in a term he would have embraced) its glory. As a ruling magnate in the name of the king and as head of Ireland's foremost aristocratic dynasty, his tenure marked the critical phase in what historians have termed the Kildare ascendancy. But for reasons other than those of the romantic narratives of the Great Earl 'reigning royally', Kildare's epithet is merited. This biography, which expands on established research, accounts for the myriad of factors behind the Great Earl's prominence, including his manraed, estate management and his vast distribution of patronage. His supremacy bridged the worlds of Gaelic Ireland, the English lordship of Ireland and the centre of crown authority at court. In an overview of his exceptional career, this book study highlights the Great Earl's varied, seemingly contradictory, facets. He was an English subject who served as frontier baron, yet also a governing aristocrat that transcended cultural divides. He was not merely a traditional, old colonial marcher lord but a renaissance prince. In appreciating the combination of each of these, given the challenging circumstances of his age and considering a legacy that has evolved over the centuries, the Great Earl's extraordinary exploits can truly be deemed, as Steven Ellis observes, the 'stuff of legend'.

The 1798 Rebellion was one of the bloodiest events in Irish history. Thousands of people were slaughtered in a single summer in a massive popular uprising against British rule. Thousands more were seriously injured and traumatised by the horrific violence they witnessed. Significant disturbances involved more than half of Ireland's counties, and the numbers of insurgents - upwards of 100,000 - dwarfed those who fought in later national uprisings.Today we still live with the ideological and practical consequences of the rebellion. This was the bloody climax of a decade of radicalism and reaction that saw the emergence of new forms of militant republicanism and popular loyalism that strongly influenced the course of Irish history. It was inspired by a desire to unite Ireland's political and religious factions, but in the end drove them further apart. The rebellion sought to secure Ireland's independence, but instead led directly to an Act of Union with Great Britain that determined the course of Anglo-Irish relations for two centuries.French and American revolutionary ideas were deeply embedded in this movement, and the impact of 1798 reached far beyond Irish waters. The flight, exile and banishment of thousands of Irish people abroad ensured that its ripple effects were felt on the European continent and throughout the English-speaking world, in Britain, North America and Australia.Bloody Summer is a fresh and comprehensive exploration of the rebellion that seeks to answer the question of not just what happened in 1798, but why it happened, and demonstrates a new, compelling account of this seismic event in Irish history.

Civil War politics has defined the Irish political landscape for generations. The parties which emerged from the divisions over the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 dominated elections for decades. The war cast a long shadow over party politics and elections in subsequent years. In Kerry, the Civil War was more divisive, violent and protracted than in any other county. Political discourse and electioneering in Kerry were infused with the divisions and hatreds which the war had created. Elections brought underlying tensions to the surface and were often occasions of violence fuelled by fiery rhetoric from election platforms. From Bullets to Ballots offers unique insights into the origins and characteristics of Civil War politics in Ireland with particular focus on Kerry. It is an in-depth examination of how politics developed in this constituency in the decade after 1923. It reveals that, despite the underlying tensions and a profound legacy of suffering and loss, democracy endured and the ballot prevailed over the bullet as a means of settling political differences. The results of elections for the Civil War parties, as well as other parties who were not defined by the Treaty split, are considered in detail and highlight significant deviations from national results. Key influences on electoral behaviour are considered, including the extent of party organisation, the role of party members, the dynamics of election campaigns, how the memory of the Civil War was used to persuade voters, and the crucial role of newspapers and their coverage of elections.Owen O'Shea forensically investigates Kerry's Civil War politics by presenting the lived experience of elections for the party member, the candidate and the voter; how parties organised and campaigned; and what influenced the choice of voters at the polls. Thus, From Bullets to Ballots provides the first ever examination of politics at the constituency level in this divisive and decisive period in Irish history.

Marian Keyes is one of Ireland's most important fiction authors but is often not celebrated as such. Keyes' novels draw on the author's trademark charm, wit, and pathos, yet her girly packaging and light-hearted marketing resulted in far too little critical attention and celebration compared to her literary contemporaries.Since Marian Keyes first started publishing in 1995, Ireland has changed significantly, from the legalisation of divorce to same-sex marriage and abortion, to the rise and fall of the Celtic Tiger. Marian Keyes and the Politics of Commercial Fiction analyses how the trappings of commercial fiction underpinning Keyes' literary marginalisation affable persona, book covers, social media presence have in fact helped her engage with these societal changes through socially inclusive messaging, encouraging readers towards social activism. Focusing on her depiction of three significant Irish loci of shame: addiction, depression, and abortion, this original study draws upon Keyes' novels, essays, interviews, and online posts to demonstrate how her writings serve as a counterpoint to culturally prevalent, stigmatising depictions of people coping with addiction and mental illness. Maria Butler engages with Keyes' longstanding abortion activism - present since her first novel, Watermelon - to emphasise the literary, political, and societal importance of feminine-coded commercial literature. This groundbreaking study seeks to challenge the existing narrative on Keyes and open a window to her extraordinary writings for future readers.

Offering original New Zealand perspectives on the Irish Revolution from the third Home Rule crisis to the establishment of the Irish Free State, this collection explores the political, social, and cultural evolution of Ireland from 1912 to 1923.Interrogating rare and previously untouched primary sources, the contributors capture an array of New Zealand outlooks, from the experiences of soldiers who visited Ireland during World War I to the views of local Irish nationalists. New Zealand's contribution to the global movement for self-determination for Ireland and its participation in the Irish Race Congress in Paris are explored. Reflections on the poets of the Easter Rising, engagements with Irish modernists, and the impact of Cumann na nGaedheal and Cumann na mBan are investigated. Shifts during the decade in the associational life of Irish migrants, their children and grandchildren are analysed. Cultural memory is illuminated in an account of how a Catholic newspaper fostered a collective understanding of Irish history and contemporary events.New Zealand's Irish Revolution examines the dominion's relationship with Ireland, discussing notions of 'home', diaspora, identity, and belonging, and reveals new details about the lives and ideas of Irish residents and their descendants. A fresh and thought-provoking collection that will enhance our understanding of the Irish Revolution and its broader international impact through an Antipodean lens.

The story of the grassroots #WakingTheFeminists movement in Irish theater, a campaign that changed how we saw the world and reshaped the future both on and off the stage. When the Abbey Theatre's 2016 centenary program excluded women artists, it sparked a nationwide movement. What began as an outrage on social media evolved into a meticulously organized yearlong campaign that transformed the Irish theater landscape-and resonated beyond. WTF Happened reveals the behind-the-scenes, untold story of the groundbreaking #WakingTheFeminists grassroots movement for gender equality in Irish theater, 2015-16. Leading activists, academics, historians, and arts professionals, with the support of the Irish Theatre Institute, compile their knowledge into a multidisciplinary archive relevant to gender studies, women's history, arts and theater, cultural policy and governance, social justice, and contemporary history. Included within these pages are photographs, visual examples of social media interactions, and memorabilia of the movement as kept by its organizers and both the National Library of Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland. As well as being an important and exhaustive historical record of a short-lived but highly impactful collective campaign, this book serves as an inspiring guide for future activists, offering crucial lessons on mobilizing grassroots efforts to achieve systemic change. It underscores the ongoing work needed to achieve full gender equality, both in the arts and in society at large, and puts #WakingTheFeminists in context with the Irish activist movements that came before and after. Great theater changes the atmosphere in the room and reshapes how we think about our lives. Great campaigning changes how we see the world and reshapes our future.

"Involvement and Detachment" is much more than a discussion of 'objectivity' in the social sciences. It is Elias' major exposition of his sociological theory of the growth of knowledge and the sciences as an aspect of overall human social development. The essay 'The fishermen in the maelstrom' takes its title from a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, and is used to illustrate how fears have to be overcome in order for 'reality-adequate' knowledge - necessary to tackle the dangers from which the fears arise - to accumulate. Discussions of rising dangers in international relations show how far the theory of civilising process is from being a model of unilinear 'progress'. Two fragments on 'The great evolution' discuss the long-term development of the various levels of scientific knowledge - physical, biological and social. Originally written in English, it includes various passages omitted from the previous edition.

Elias effectively founded the modern sociology of sport in collaboration with Eric Dunning in the 1960s and 1970s. They argue that in highly constrained, 'civilised' societies, sports - as well as a spectrum of other cultural and leisure activities - are to be understood not in terms of 'relaxation' but rather of the need for pleasurable excitement and its pleasurable resolution. The topics range historically from the violence of the ancient Greek Olympic Games to foxhunting, early forms of football, and the question of why Britain proved to be the cradle of so many modern sports. And, today, what are the effects of achievement striving in elite sports? Why has spectator violence become such a problem? Why do so many sports retain the character of a 'male preserve'? Originally written in English, this volume has been thoroughly revised by Eric Dunning and includes one hitherto unpublished essay by Elias and a new essay by Dunning, bringing up to date his interpretation of football hooliganism.

This collection of essays commemorates the Parnells of Avondale and simultaneously uses the theme of commemoration to provide an insight into the shifting relationship between history and memory in the case of Charles Stewart Parnell and his family. The essays by two leading Irish historians have an elegiac tone. The authors show an elegant and sympathetic appreciation of Parnell's career and of how he has been viewed in Irish history since his death in 1891. Parnell's nationalism is explored and his political speeches, the significance of his sojourn in Kilmainham, his American connections, his funeral and the rise and decline of 'Ivy day' and other commemorations after his death. The authors also look at the careers of the Parnell women: his mother Delia and his sisters Anna and Fanny who were both political activists and involved in the Ladies' Land League; and his relationship with Katharine O'Shea, later his wife. There is also an essay on his brother and biographer, John Howard Parnell. The essays throw new light on the Parnell family and their place in Irish history. They will be valuable reading for students of nineteenth-century Ireland, the Parnell family and the debate on 'commemoration history'.

Eleven of the 18 essays by Norbert Elias collected in this volume have not been published previously in English, and several of the remainder were not easily obtained. The themes of this volume represent major extensions of and reflections upon the ideas first advanced in "The Civilizing Process". The topics include violence and civilisation; the civilising of parents; privacy; conflict and change within communities; public opinion and national character in Britain; the charismatic leadership of Adolf Hitler; and the fear of death.

This is Volume 3 in the "Collected Works of Norbert Elias", translated by Edmund Jephcott. Recognised as one of the most important works of sociology in the last century, "On the Process of Civilisation" has been influential and widely discussed across the whole range of the humanities and social sciences. This sumptuous new edition, completely revised with many corrections and clarifications, includes colour plates of all the 13 drawings from "Das Mittelaterliche Hausbuch" to which Elias refers in his famous discussion of 'Scenes from the life of a knight'. Beginning with his celebrated study of the changing standards of behaviour of the secular upper classes in Western Europe since the Middle Ages, Elias demonstrates how 'psychological' changes in habitus and emotion management were linked to wider transformations in power relations, especially the monopolisation of violence and taxation by more increasingly effective state apparatuses.

Studies on the Germans, Volume 11 of the Collected Works, was first published in German in 1989, exactly 50 years after Elias' most famous work, On the Process of Civilisation. The essays in the book were written independently of each other over three decades. In this new edition, Elias' original English text of the extremely important essay 'The breakdown of civilisation' is published for the first time. Other essays include those on duelling and its wider social significance, as well as on nationalism, civilisation and violence, and post-war terrorism in the Federal Republic of Germany. All the essays have been newly annotated by the editors, especially to make clear many historical references that Elias, unrealistically, assumed his readers would understand without further explanation.

"The Symbol Theory, volume 13 in "The Collected Works of Norbert Elias", situates the human capacity for forming symbols in the long-term biological evolution of Homo sapiens, showing how it is linked through communication and orientation to group survival. Elias proceeds to recast the question of the ontological status of knowledge, moving beyond the old philosophical dualisms of idealism/materialism and subject/object. He readjusts the boundary between the 'social' and the 'natural' by interweaving evolutionary biology and the social sciences. "The Symbol Theory" provides nothing less than a new image of the human condition as an accidental outcome of the blind flux of an indifferent cosmos. Elias' Introduction now includes previously unpublished passages written in the days before he died.

Vol. 17 of the Collected Works can serve as an excellent introduction to Elias's thinking overall. In the last decade of his life, Elias gave many interviews in which he discussed aspects of his work, rebutting many common misunderstandings of his thinking and further developing ideas sketched out in his writings. Besides a selection of these 'academic' interviews (many of them not previously published in English, or not published at all), the book contains his essay in intellectual autobiography and a long interview in which he talks about his own life.

Vol. 18 of the Collected Works, besides including the consolidated index to the Collected Works as a whole, contains two substantial supplements: a long and important critique on Freud written in the last weeks of Elias' life, not previously published in English; and an essay, not previously published in any language, on the anthropologist-philosopher Lucien Levy-Bruhl and the problem of 'the logical unity of humankind'. Both essays fill important gaps in Elias' work, and deal with common criticisms of his thought.

In this comprehensive history of the Irish Boundary Commission, Paul Murray looks at British attempts from 1886 on to satisfy the Irish Nationalist demand for Home Rule, Ulster and British Unionist resistance to this demand, the 1920 partition of Ireland and the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty, where the roots of the establishment of the Commission are to be found. The evidence presented at the Commission and the principles on which it based its decisions are analysed against the background of evolving British views on the dangers posed for British and Unionist interests on both islands by a radical redrawing of the 1920 border. New documentary evidence is brought to bear on the motivation of its Chairman Justice Feetham, his susceptibility to external influences, and the significance of his political background as possible factors in his final decisions. The history of the Irish Boundary Commission is shown to also be part of a larger European narrative. This study is, thus, the first large-scale attempt to consider its significance in its wider international context.

The Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland (EMIR) is the first comprehensive attempt to chart Irish musical life across recorded history. It also documents Ireland's musical relations with the world at large, notably in Britain, continental Europe and North America, and it seeks to identify the agencies through which music has become an enduring expression of Irish political, social, religious and cultural life. In these respects, EMIR is the collective work of 240 contributors whose research has been marshalled by an editorial and advisory board of specialists in the following domains of Irish musical experience: secular and religious music to 1600; art music, 1600-2010; Roman catholic church music; Protestant church music; popular music; traditional music; organology and iconography; historical musicology; ethnomusicology; the history of recorded sound; music and media; music printing and publishing; and, music in Ireland as trade, industry and profession. EMIR contains some 2,000 individual entries which collectively afford an unprecedented survey of the fabric of music in Ireland. It records and evaluates the work of hundreds of individual musicians, performers, composers, teachers, collectors, scholars, ensembles, societies and institutions throughout Irish musical history, and it comprehends the relationship between music and its political, artistic, religious, educational and social contexts in Ireland from the early middle ages to the present day. In its extensive catalogues, discographies and source materials, EMIR sets in order, often for the first time, the legacy and worklists of performers and composers active in Ireland (or of Irish extraction), notably (but not exclusively) in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It offers to the general reader a regiment of 'brief lives' of Irish musicians throughout history, and it affords the specialist a detailed retrieval of information on music in Ireland hitherto unavailable or difficult to access. Above all, it is (proverbially) encyclopaedic in its address on the plurality and diversity of Irish musical experience. To this end, EMIR represents the single largest research project on music in Ireland to have been undertaken to date.

Imaginary Bonnets with Real Bees in Them is the third volume in UCD Press's The Poet's Chair series, publishing the public lectures of the Ireland Professors of Poetry. The Ireland Chair of Poetry was established in 1998 following the award of the Nobel Prize of Literature to Seamus Heaney and is supported by Queen's University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaion. Michael Longley's and Harry Clifton's lectures were published in 2015. Paula Meehan's volume of The Poet's Chair meditates on poetry and mythology, geology and the environment, teachers and the lyric, bees and bears, genetics, memory, personal history, and much else. In three wide-ranging lectures she charts a contemporary poet's relationship with community (emblematised by bees), family (emblematised by bears), and selfhood (emblematised by water). Upon her appointment as the Ireland Professor of Poetry, Meehan was praised as a poet of solidarity, whose work upheld the dignity of the human spirit and skilfully blended a shared and personal history. Now at the end of her tenure, this illuminating volume of her writings as Chair gives a remarkable insight into the creative processes of a poet who has contributed so much to the craft of Irish poetry.

This new and expanded edition of Talking of Joyce focuses on James Joyce's cultural ancestry - aesthetic and linguistic, in particular - and his Italian influences and connections. Originally published in 1998, to great success, this new and revised edition brings original scholarship to contemporary readers and contains an insightful added essay on Joyce's aesthetic musings. In his foreword, the internationally renowned Coleridge scholar J. C. C. Mays praises the original essays by Eco and Santoro-Brienza for being both highly respectful of Joyce and for their friendly familiarity with him. Mays also notes that 'These commentaries, by Italians in English, of an author of books in English who preferred to speak Italian, are a rich and illuminating conjunction. Read these lectures for the way they are, for they brings together two worlds. Their eminent authors do not stand on dignity: they communicate directly what is important. They have different things to say, but each celebrates values which Joyce held most dear.'The addition of Santoro-Brienza's new essay also gives readers a fresh insight into Eco's unique contribution to our understanding of Joyce, Aquinas and aesthetics, and was written in honour of Eco's eightieth birthday. This volume brings to light fascinating aspects of Ireland's most famous literary figure and places him in a wider cultural context. From two renowned scholars, passionately interested in the Irish revolutionary writer, Talking of Joyce is a welcome addition to our reckoning with Joyce's legacy and is a fascinating contribution to Joyce studies.

The three volumes of this series offer a detailed history of how prose in the Irish language developed from the birth of the native state in 1922 to 1951. Making extensive use of contemporary newspapers, journals, personal papers, and other primary texts of all kinds - novels, short stories, plays, biographies - the books recreate the intellectual and ideological climate of the time with regard to the preservation and spread of Irish as a modern literary language. Separate chapters deal with such questions as the role of the native speaker in the creation of a contemporary literature, the importance of the Gaeltacht on rural subjects and themes, interpretations of Irish history, the literary potential of early Irish heroic literature and mythology, the value of translation into Irish, and the challenges of providing popular entertainment such as light reading, theatre and the cinema. Particular attention is paid to major literary works like those of Mairtin O'Cadhain, Liam O'Flathartaigh (O'Flaherty), and Brian O'Nuallain ('Myles na gCopaleen').

Ever seen a fat fox? Didn't think so. Why it is that only humans - or animals in the care of humans - develop obesity? In Ever Seen a Fat Fox?: Human Obesity Explored Professor Mike Gibney delves into the history of the human relationship with food. He traces the evolution of our modern diet and looks to science to offer solutions to the phenomenon of human obesity. He calls on governments to cease the single-issue ad-hoc approach and demands a massive governmental long-term investment in weight management. It is a commonly held belief that obesity is a recent phenomenon. Professor Gibney reveals that obesity is nothing new - in fact, the modern upward trend in obesity began in the mid-nineteenth century. Obesity has been part of human experience whenever and wherever we've had affluence. There are many who seek to apportion blame for the epidemic of obesity. Blaming the food industry for obesity is always popular: sugar is public enemy number one. Debunking exaggerated views and cutting through the mixed messaging Gibney demonstrates that most food processing techniques are old, hundreds and thousands of years old.The genetics of obesity, the practice of dieting, and the value of physical activity are thoroughly assessed. The failures of the players in obesity - including the media, scientists, academic organisations, international agencies, specifically the WHO, and the food industry are brought into sharp focus. What can we learn from the fox? An expert in public health and personalised nutrition with bestselling books and over 300 peer-reviewed papers in the area, Professor Mike Gibney uncovers the full story behind obesity based on painstaking research, and offers us tangible solutions to this very human phenomenon.

Women's literary expressions of war have long been neglected and at times forgotten in Irish scholarship. In Women Writing War: Ireland 1880-1922 many of these forgotten women are revealed through their writings as culturally active and deeply invested in the political and military struggles of their turbulent times. From the Land Wars to the Boer Wars, from the First World War to the Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War, the fascinating women considered in this volume-grapple with the experiential representation of conflicts. The diverse range of topics explored include: women's eye- witness accounts of 1916, Winifred Letts's First World War poetry, the political rhetoric and experiences of Anna Parnell and Anne Blunt during the Land War, Peggie Kelly's fiction and Cumann na mBan activism, the cultural nationalism of northern. Protestant "New Women" of the Glens of Antrim, Una Ni Fhaircheallaigh's Irish language activism in and beyond the Gaelic League, Emily Lawless's Boer War diary as well as the dramatic collaboration of sisters Eva Gore-Booth and Countess Markievicz. The book also includes a preface by historian Margaret Ward and an extract from Lia Mills's award-winning historical novel Fallen, set in Dublin during the Easter Rising (selected as the 2016 'One City One Book' choice for both Dublin and Belfast).Engaging with recent Scholarly debates on sexuality, war writing, and the politics of Irish warfare, the authors of Women Writing War explore the ways in which conflict narratives have been read - and interpreted - as deeply gendered. Radicals, revolutionaries and queer activists, as well as women who remained attached to the domestic sphere, are all represented in this original and provocative volume on the relationship between women and conflict.

More Than Concrete Blocks: Dublin city's twentieth-century buildings and their stories is a three volume series of architectural history books which are richly illustrated and written for the general reader. Unpacking the history of Dublin's architecture during the twentieth century, each book covers a period, in chronological sequence: Volume 1, 1900-1939; Volume 2, 1940-1972; Volume 3, 1973-1999.The series comes out of a pioneering research and survey project commissioned and funded by Dublin City Council's Heritage Office and has received grant support from the Heritage Council and the Department of Housing Local Government and Heritage. Edited by Dr Ellen Rowley, the series considers the city as a layered and complex place. It makes links between Dublin's buildings and Dublin's political, social, cultural and economic histories. By focusing on architecture as the central thread in the story of the city in formation, 1900-2000, More Than Concrete Blocks is about the relationship between architecture and people in Dublin City. For Volume 3, the series editor is joined by Dr Carole Pollard as co-editor. This volume contains three introductory historical essays covering the building culture in Dublin of the 1970s (Carole Pollard), the 1980s (Ellen Rowley) and the 1990s (Merlo Kelly). These overview essays are followed by 31 studies ranging from iconic situations such as the Poolbeg Chimneys (1971-78), the Papal Cross (Phoenix Park, 1979) or the Central Bank (1979) on Dame Street, to lesser-known structures like the Willowfield housing scheme (1985) in Sandymount, the AnCO Training Centre (1981) in Finglas or the Donaghmede RC parish church (1979). Each study is framed according to key historic questions, and raises issues around architectural technology and materials, patronage, economic histories and urban planning, residents and ceremonial or daily use, and so on. Importantly, Volume 3 covers the decades of the end of the twentieth century, as Ireland joined the European Commission and Dublin city grew confident enough to reimagine Temple Bar. So, much of this history captures the energy and subsequent architectural framing of social infrastructure during this period. Volume 3 also presents an overview, in guidebook style, of 140 sites; a survey of the city's buildings over the period 1973 to 1999, not as 'a best of' but as a representation of architectural endeavour at the time.

Irish-language theatre has at times been on the fringes of Ireland's cultural landscape - invisible and underground - but its influence can be seen all over the island of Ireland. An Underground Theatre is the first full-length study of playwrights working in the Irish language in the pivotal 1930-80 period. In this landmark volume Philip O'Leary analyses the works of Mairead Ni Ghrada, Seamus O Neill, Eoghan O Tuairisc, Sean O Tuama, and Criostoir O Floinn and discusses the production history of their plays and the critical reception of first productions and major revivals. O'Leary also outlines the beginnings of drama in Irish in the early twentieth century and provides important historical context. The developments in Irish-language theatre since 1980 are also discussed in this important contribution to Irish theatre studies. Using a wide range of sources, O'Leary gives a thorough evaluation of five of the most significant Irish-language playwrights and charts the monumental influence and reach of their work.

The Bag Apron: The Poet and His Community is part of UCD Press's The Poet's Chair series, publishing the public lectures of the Ireland Professors of Poetry. The Ireland Chair of Poetry was established in 1998 following the award of the Nobel Prize of Literature to Seamus Heaney and is supported by Queen's University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Arts Counci 1/An Chomhairle Ealafon. Other poets in the series include Nuala N1 Dhomhnaill, Paul Durcan, Michael Longley, Harry Clifton and Paula Meehan. In his volume of The Poet's Chair, John Montague speaks of finding his own voice and of 'wandering around the world to discover the self you were born with'. He also shares his thoughts on the long poem format and the relationship between words and music, investigates the challenges of translation in poetry, and speaks about his relationship with Samuel Beckett, whom he knew in Paris.

Three European Poets is part of UCD Press's The Poet's Chair series, publishing the public lectures of the Ireland Professors of Poetry. The Ireland Chair of Poetry was established in 1998 following the award of the Nobel Prize of Literature to Seamus Heaney and is supported by Queen's University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Arts Counci 1/An Chomhairle Ealaion. Other poets in the series include John Montague, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Michael Longley, Harry Clifton and Paula Meehan. In his volume of The Poet's Chair Paul Durcan examines the work and impact of Irish poets Anthony Cronin, Michael Hartnett and Harry Clifton and places them in a European context. He focuses on Cronin's The End of the Modern World, Hartnett's Sibelius in Silence and Clifton's Vaucluse in this insightful volume.

Maud Gonne has long been viewed merely as a contemporary of more prominent literary, political and legal figures who played a role in Irish politics of the early twentieth century. While Eva Gore-Booth has been the subject of recent critical attention, much less notice has been paid to Gonne. This succinct biography highlights the significance of Gonne as a political and literary figure in her own right and utilises archival resources in a detailed study of her role as a political activist, journalist, reviewer and also as a founder and editor of nationalist publications. Drawing on previously unpublished correspondence and interviews, this book offers an important re-evaluation of Gonne's contribution to the political and social landscape of early twentieth-century Ireland. It contributes to the growing emphasis in scholarship on the roles played by women in the formation of the Irish state.
