Based on a favourite character from BBC TV sitcom `Allo `Allo! In this delightful book, Officer Crabtree's masterly grasp of 'Fronch' falls under the spotlight as never before. From 'Ploose may I hov a kippy of the dooly nosepooper?' to 'frigs logs', 'scrimbled oggs' and 'fosh and chops' the book is a tribute to mangled words and phrases. Arthur Bostrom, who played Officer Crabtree on stage and screen, mixes vowels and pronunciation trying to educate those less gifted in the French 'longwodge'... For example: 'Criss chunnel fairy'... 'Which bonk do you bonk with?'... 'Would you lick a drunk?'.... Illustrated by John Cooper and ideal for travellers and fans of `Allo `Allo! alike, Good Moaning France! is a wake-up call for anyone who thinks they are competent in French (or English or any other language). Readers' questions are answered in Ask Crabtree, there are examples from Crabtree's 'poloce newtberks' and a most unhelpful 'Undex'. In a Foreword music legend Rick Wakeman recalls how he fell off his chair laughing on seeing the character created by screenwriters David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd at the start of the second series (the book is published by permission).

A brand new book by eminent legal biographer and historian John Hostettler. Hard on the heels of his acclaimed work with Richard Braby on Sir William Garrow, comes a further text on one of crime and punishments under-recorded and maybe unsung heroes. In eighteenth century continental Europe penal law was barbaric. Gallows were a regular feature of the landscape, branding and mutilation common and there existed the ghastly spectacle of men being broken on the wheel. To make matters worse, people were often tortured or put to death for minor crimes (sometimes both) and often without any trial at all. Like a bombshell, a book entitled On Crimes and Punishments, exploded onto the scene in 1764 with shattering effect. Its author was a young nobleman named Cesare Beccaria (1738-1794). A central message of that - now classic - work were that such punishments were part of 'a war of nations against their citizens' and should be abolished. It was a cri de coeur for thorough reform of the law affecting punishments and it swept across the continent of Europe like wildfire, being adopted by one ruler after another. It even crossed the Atlantic to the new United States of America, in the hands of Thomas Jefferson. In a wonderful sentence which concludes Beccaria's book, he sums up matters as follows: 'In order that every punishment may not be an act of violence, committed by one man or by many against a single individual, it ought to be above all things public, speedy, necessary, the least possible in the given circumstances, proportioned to its crime [and] dictated by the laws'. A welcome addition to the Waterside Press list of biographical and historical works, this new book on Cesare Beccaria - targeted to highlight matters of both universal and current relevance - will be of considerable interest to anyone wishing to trace the development of the rights of individuals charged with or convicted of crimes, and of the importance of fairness, proportionality, decency and similar matters which may be at-risk in the wrong hands. Civilising penal law remains a topical issue but it began with the subject of this work.

The case of Lizzie Bordon is one of the most infamous in criminal history having spawned songs, plays and media speculation. It also ranks as one of the most puzzling. Having been acquitted of the axe murders of both her parents, Borden then returned home and carried on as before only to be roundly ostracised by the stoutly religious local community. Prosecutors never charged anyone else. Here, author Ronald Bartle revisits events in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1892. He explains how her answers to police questions were at times strange and contradictory and her accounts often bizarre. With so many pointers to her involvement in the killings her trial has been compared to that of O J Simpson in the modern day. Whatever the justice of the situation, no-one wanted to see a woman hanged. The case is immortalised in legal folklore as well as the children's skipping rhyme:Lizzie Borden took an axeAnd gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she had done,She gave her father forty-one.A refreshing account of a very famous case. Contains legal and other analysis. A fly-on-the-wall view of the nineteenth century USA justice system. A true story that reads like a thriller. From the text: "The essence of the prosecution case in the Borden trial is simply: If Lizzie didn't do it who else could have done? But when that is the proposition before a jury trying a defendant who enjoys from start to finish the presumption of innocence that is not enough...There is a difference between feeling certain that the defendant is guilty-and the sufficiency of the evidence to prove it. The method of criminal trial in Anglo-American jurisprudence is weighted in favour of the defendant...But as a system of justice it is, like democracy, though imperfect, better than all the others."

Since this book was first published in the 1950s the description it contains of the history of crime and punishment in Britain over the previous 200 years or so has attracted interest across a wide spectrum. The work was reprinted in 1992 by Waterside Press having been out of print for decades. The contents cover a wide range of historic punishments from outlawry to the ducking stool, the pillory, stocks and whirligig to the branding iron and scold's bridle. From mutilation and torture to sanctuary and the emergence of private and then public prisons this is an essential addition to any criminal justice collection, imbued as it is by the comments of the author from the perspective of his own era, which provides for fascination in itself. Printed in the original style and format, together with a large number of the original illustrations. Quite absorbing, the book transports the reader to a time when punishment was often brutal, unrestrained and unregulated by standards, fairness or consistency. It also looks at the sometimes strange logic that was applied by judges, justices of the peace and those charged with carrying out the task.

This work examines the links between educational failure and future offending behaviour. It contains the stories of inmates' schooldays told in their own words as they try to answer the question "could anything have been done to prevent you being in custody now?" The book ends with suggestions on action schools might take towards redressing social, cultural and educational disadvantage and intervening to help limit future offending behaviour.

Every lawyer knows of Woolmington v. Director of Public Prosecutions, the ruling which established the ‘Golden thread of English law’ whereby the burden of proof lies with the prosecutor in a criminal trial. But who was Woolmington and how many people know that he escaped the death penalty at the eleventh hour, or that he was in fact twice tried for murder? ‘Lords give man back his life’ as the Western Gazette put it. In the civil law, how and why did a Mrs. Donoghue come to be drinking a bottle of ginger beer containing the remnants of a snail, an event which would determine that ‘the categories of negligence are never closed’? And how did the tranquil market town of Wednesbury become shorthand for ‘unreasonableness’?In Famous Cases: Nine Trials that Changed the Law the authors have painstakingly assembled the less well-known background to a selection of leading cases. From Mareva (synonymous with a type of injunction) to Lord Denning’s classic ruling in the High Trees House case (the turning point for equitable estoppel) to that of the former Chilean head of state General Pinochet (in which the House of Lords heard the facts a second time) the authors offer a refreshing perspective to whet the appetite of newcomers, students and seasoned practitioners alike. The book has an authoritative introduction describing ‘The Origins of the Common Law’ and is enhanced by key extracts from the law reports reproduced courtesy of the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales and the Butterworths Division of Reed Elsevier (UK) Ltd — making it not just an absorbing read but an important work of reference for every legal library and collection.

Alex Alexandrowicz spent 22 years in custody protesting his innocence. This book explains how something which began with a plea bargain in the belief that he would serve a 'short' sentence turned into a Kafkaesque nightmare. His 'Prison Chronicles' are placed in perspective by Professor David Wilson. The Longest Injustice contains the full story of Anthony Alexandrovich - known universally as 'Alex'. Principally, the book is about his 29-year fight against his conviction as a seventeen-year-old for aggravated burglary, wounding with intent, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Twenty-two of these years were spent in prison where Alex was a discretionary life sentenced prisoner, and where he steadfastly maintained his innocence. He continues to do so after release, and is taking his case through the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), which was set up in 1995 to investigate alleged miscarriages of justice. Alex's own recollections are supplemented by analysis of the dilemma facing people in British prisons who are determined to maintain their innocence, and the book highlights the considerable disincentives and disadvantages to them of doing so.Authors Alex Alexandrowicz spent 22 years in some of Britain's most notorious gaols much of this time as a Category A high security prisoner. His Prison Chronicles are a first hand account in which he explains why he believes he was wrongly convicted (a matter currently with the Criminal Cases Review Commission) and vividly recreates his experiences of the early years following his arrest. Institutionalised by the system and apprehensive of the outside world he now lives alone in Milton Keynes where he continues the long fight to clear his name from a flat which has grown to resemble a prison cell. David Wilson is professor of criminology at the Centre for Criminal Justice Policy and Research at the University of Central England in Birmingham. A former prison governor, he is editor of the Howard Journal and a well-known author, broadcaster and presenter for TV and radio, including for the BBC, C4 and Sky Television. He has written three other books for Waterside Press: Prison(er) Education: Stories of Change and Transformation (with Ann Reuss) (2000) , Images of Incarceration: Representations of Prison in Film and Television Drama (with Sean O'Sullivan) (2004), and Serial Killers: Hunting Britons and Their Victims (2007).

Hanging in the Balance traces the history of capital punishment in the United Kingdom from ancient times to the modern day-through periods of reform until hanging for murder was finally abolished by Parliament in 1969. It describes in detail the Parliamentary and public debates, and notes the stance taken by organizations and individuals (including the tenacious and persistent Sydney Silverman MP). The book collates data and references not previously brought together in one place - and in exploring the underlying issues and the recurring arguments about deterrence, retribution and expediency it provides an invaluable resource vis-a-vis the same debate in the many countries where capital punishment still exists. Lord Callaghan was home secretary at the time of abolition. His Foreword conveys how strong his personal feelings were concerning the death penalty from the time he entered Parliament in 1945. The book's closing chapters record how his insistence that abolition should become permanent ultimately overcame the still considerable opposition. Capital punishment was finally abolished in 1999 throughout the UK.For all practical purposes this had already happened in 1969 when the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965 was made fully effective into following a trial period. 'A masterwork': Justice of the Peace

This book will also be of considerable use to lawyers who need key information in a manageable form, the three expert authors having distilled the advice in the book from years of first-hand experience working in the courts.

The first edition of this work was published in 1997 and reprinted several times in response to popular demand. It focuses on the multiple hazards of discrimination due to race, gender and class - faced by black women in contact with the criminal justice process of England and Wales. This extensively updated and revised second edition includes substantial information about developments since that time. The text which includes accounts of black women prisoners and other black people concerning their treatment by and impressions of 'the system' - has become key reading for practitioners and students alike.

The authors write this book from personal knowledge of lifers and many years experience working closely with them within the prison system - making "Murderers and Life Imprisonment" not just a highly authoritative account but also one containing vivid, often compelling illustrations. There is a certain futility in some of the present arrangements and the authors do not shrink from making a number of suggestions for improvements under the headings containment, treatment, public safety and risk. The range of this major work is wide: from an examination of 'Who Are the Lifers?' (including a UK/USA comparison), lifer profiles, 'The Structure of a Life Sentence' and 'The Psychology of the Murderer', the book moves on to deal with 'Containment and Treatment', 'Discretionary Lifer Panels' and a range of ethical, Human Rights and associated issues. There are special contributions by David Wilson on 'Delusions of Innocence' and Roland Woodward on 'Lifer Risk Assessment' (including what it is, how it is done and a critical examination of clinical and other methods). The work is further enhanced by case studies (anonymised) based on actual case histories.

This, Angela Devlin’s classic text, was written at a time when there were few, if any, special arrangements for women in prison in England and Wales. It was a driving force in the creation of a dedicated female prison estate with its own director, regimes and regulations that took account of women’s different needs. Until then, the media tended to focus mainly on high profile women prisoners like Myra Hindley and Rosemary West. Most women became ‘invisible’ as soon as they passed through the prison gates and were subsumed into a world that was predominantly masculine and insensitive to their own situation. The author spent five years visiting prisons taking women, interviewing female prisoners and those whose job it is to care for them — prison officers, education, probation and healthcare staff, chaplains and counsellors. The result is a book that is accessible to the general reader as well as the prison professional. It vividly recreates the realities of prison life for women prisoners.Devlin describes the over-use of medication as a means of control; overcrowding; expenditure cuts; staff shortages; the violence resulting from drug misuse; the plight of ethnic minority and foreign national women; and the self-mutilation and suicide attempts of female prisoners in desperate need of help.Invisible Women has stood the test of time. It enables readers — especially who have never set foot inside a prison — to see the unique impact of imprisonment on women.

Going Straight is the flagship publication behind the launch of Unlock, the National Association of Ex-Offenders. It contains revealing interviews with people who have ‘succeeded’ after prison and in some cases a ‘criminal career’. The book looks at a range of offenders who have changed their way of life. They include famous, notorious, creative and ordinary people who were prepared to talk about the turning point in their lives when they left crime behind. Their candid explanations about how they rebuilt their lives — often full of remorse for their victims and determined to repay something to their communities — are challenging, illuminating and a cause for optimism. They include ex-burglar John Bowers (later an editor of prison newspaper Inside Time), former violent criminal Frank Cook (a sculptor and author), ex drug-dealer Peter Cameron (a successful artist whose work features on the front cover), Great Train Robbery mastermind Bruce Reynolds, actor Stephen Fry, former armed gangster Bob Cummines (the first Chief Executive of Unlock) and Cameron Mackenzie (Glasgow villain turned minister of religion). Others include a self-made millionaire, a one-time compulsive gambler, an individual involved in The Troubles in Northern Ireland — and one or two who chose to use a pseudonym.

John Alderson demonstrates how it is all too easy for everyday police officers to fall into behaviour which becomes difficult to comprehend-as a result of police practices, working cultures and a lack of values for decision-making. Through his description of what he calls 'high police' and by way of worldwide examples he calls for decency, fairness and morality to act as touchstones for police officers everywhere. Principled Policing - which is dedicated to 'the innocent victims of the world's unprincipled policing' is now in wide use on courses for police training. Review 'The book...is excellent...I am using often during the seminars which we have in Macedonia': Trpe Stojanovski, 50 Police Division, Republic of Macedonia. Author John Alderson QPM is the former Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall and enjoyed a high profile during his police career arguing for decency and morality in police work - and against the abuse of power. He is a barrister-at-law and police writer and scholar whose work is of international repute. His books have been translated into many languages (from Icelandic to Chinese) and are currently in use in police institutions worldwide. His police career, spanning 36 years, began as a foot patrol officer in the North of England. He later held some of the highest and most influential positions in British policing, including Commandant of the National Police Staff College, Bramshill and Assistant Commissioner, New Scotland Yard: his career culminating in his appointment as chief constable of Devon and Cornwall where, as a proponent of community policing, he developed its theory and initiated its early practice. In 1982 he was commissioned by the Council of Europe Committee for Education in Human Rights to write the European textbook for the training of European police officials, Human Rights and the Police (Strasbourg, 1984). His other published works include The Police We Deserve with P J Stead (Woolfe, 1973), Policing Freedom (Macdonald and Evans, 1979) and Law and Disorder (Hamish Hamilton, 1984). He was visiting professor of police studies at the University of Strathclyde from 1983 to 1988, has held fellowships at Cambridge, Oxford, Exeter and Portsmouth universities, and holds doctorates (Honoris Causa) from the universities of Exeter (Law) and Bradford (Letters).

What are persistent young offenders, children of 14 to 16 or even younger, really like? What do they think about when they steal or rob people? Why do they think they are always getting into trouble? In this vivid, compelling and combative work Sarah Curtis chronicles at first hand young people talking about all aspects of their chaotic lives, their hopes for the future and their anxieties - where possible recording their parents views also.Following an analysis of youth justice based on 20 years direct experience she points out that we do know how to prevent much juvenile offending through community projects of proven benefit and other tried and tested means of reintegrating children in trouble with the law into schools, colleges, communities and careers. To this end, she makes suggestions which go well beyond the reforms of successive governments (including those in the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Bill) who have preferred the rhetoric of punishment rather than to direct adequate resources into more effective and constructive outcomes.

A major collection of writings about the transforming power of education in British prisons. Prison(er) Education comprises key essays by leading prison education practitioners, academics and prisoners, including new work on how to evaluate the 'success' of education within prison by Dr Ray Pawson of Leeds University, and Stephen Duguid of Simon Fraser University, Canada. A major challenge to penal policy-makers to accept the value of education - beyond 'basic skills', and at a time when prison regimes have come to be dominated by cognitive thinking skills courses. Edited by two leading experts on prison education in the United Kingdom - Professor David Wilson of the University of Central England (a former prison governor and co-presenter of BBC TV's Crime Squad), and Dr Anne Reuss of the University of Abertay (who previously taught at HM Prison Full Sutton). Weaving anecdote, research and evaluation, Prison(er) Education presents for the first time a comprehensive account of education inside British prisons. At the heart of the book lies the question 'Who is prison education for: prison or prisoners?'This book is a major challenge to penal policy-makers to accept the value of education - beyond 'basic skills', and at a time when regimes have come to be dominated by cognitive thinking skills courses. Weaving anecdote with solid research and evaluation, the book presents for the first time in Britain a comprehensive account of education inside prisons. Dr Anne Reuss lectures in the Sociology Department of the University of Abertay in Scotland. Prior to taking up this appointment, she taught degree level sociology to prisoners at HMP Full Sutton, which formed the basis of her doctoral dissertation - now regarded as the benchmark of research in this field.

From 2002 there has been a major initiative to engage the voluntary sector and wider community in the work of prisons, part of a general trend in Government policy. This work edited by three experts and containing contributions by a range of informed commentators seeks to enable both parties to understand what is involved, the history of voluntary work in prisons - which dates back several hundred years - and how to set about devising a scheme or promoting an idea. It gives practical advice and points to the pitfalls and likely difficulties - and contains in an appendix a directory of existing voluntary organizations with experience of working in or alongside prisons.

Ursula Smartt's ground-breaking Grendon Tales lifts the lid on a highly acclaimed regime that was developed at Grendon Underwood in Buckinghamshire from the 1960s onwards. Grendon Tales is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand: What therapy with offenders consists of; What it can achieve; How Grendon Prison with its therapeutic communities became a world leader; What drives some people to commit heinous and unspeakable crimes; How 'prison democracy' works; Why Grendon is 'the last chance saloon'; Why some prisoners struggle to 'get into' Grendon whilst others avoid the place; The impact on prisoners when they first arrive at Grendon; What happens during their time there; The pressures they face on their return to the mainstream prison system; The approach in relation to different types of offenders (including sex offenders); The effect on prisoners' lives and relationships; The aims and mission of the those who work at Grendon; and Moves to replicate its success. Direct, raw, perceptive and at times shocking, Ursula Smartt's work gives a unique insight into a world famous prison.Based on unparalleled access to HMP Grendon and direct conversations with high-risk offenders, governors, prison officers, probation officers, psychologists and other prison staff as well as her own observations of the prison's day-to-day routines over 12 months, the book provides a modern-day account of the challenging environment that Tony Parker, writing in the 1970s, described as 'The Frying Pan'. A unique work from a criminologist whose researches have taken her to prisons across the UK and in other places, including Europe, the USA and India. Her words and penetrating insights repay close study and give cause for reflection about why such methods have not been embraced more widely by a Criminal Justice System whose key aims include crime prevention, crime reduction and ensuring public safety. Reviews 'As readable as a novel...I could not put it down until finished': The Magistrate 'A breathless personal slide through her year talking to some of the country's most difficult prisoners': Frances Crook, Community Care. 'The book is both comprehensive and thourough...This is not a book to engage with lightly, or to browse through. It needs to be read completely, with a degree of commitment, for it is, ultimately, encouraging and optimistic...I can firmly endorse Ursula Smartt's work': John Broughton, It's Wandsworth.

A magnificent collection, Civilising Criminal Justice is an inescapable resource for anyone interested in restorative justice: truly international and packed with experience while combining history, theory, developments and practical advice. This volume of specially commissioned contributions by widely respected commentators on crime and punishment from various countries is a 'break-through' in bringing together some of the best arguments for long-overdue penal reform. An increasingly urgent need to change outmoded criminal processes, even in advanced democracies, demands an end to those penal excesses driven by political expediency and damaging notions of retribution, deterrence and punishment for its own sake. 'Civilising' criminal justice will make it fairer, more consistent, understandable and considerate towards victims of crime, currently largely excluded from participation. Principles of reparative and restorative justice have become increasingly influential in the quest to provide justice which tackles harm, compensates victims, repairs relationships, resolves debilitating conflicts and calls offenders to account. And in any case, what real justification is there for subjecting more and more people to the expensive but hollow experience of prison, especially at a time of economic stringency. Civil justice - in its various forms - can be swifter, cheaper and more effective, in court or through mediated processes focusing on the harmful consequences of offences rather than inflicting punishment that may satisfy a baying media but come home to haunt the community. This brave and generous book illustrates the many different ways in which criminal justice can be 'civilised' and how lessons can be learned from practical experience across the world and shared expertise. It is a volume that every politician should read, every criminal justice professional should possess, and that every student of criminology and penology will find invaluable.
