A. L. Kennedy, the son of a British diplomat, began a long career in journalism with The Times before the First World War. He was also a member of the Cabinet in three of them, appointed as Colonial Secretary twice, and Viceroy of Ireland during the Home Rule crisis of 1885-6. This book is based on the so-far comparatively neglected diaries which he kept meticulously throughout his life. Few such political diaries of Cabinet ministers on this scale and significance have survived. They show him to be a shrewd observer of events, and the records of his conversations with the leaders of the Conservative Party as well as with political opponents are of the greatest interest. This study has also drawn on many archive collections containing Carnarvon's correspondence and memoranda.

This volume in the Royal Historical Society's Camden Fifth Series is a comprehensive edition of the only surviving northern medieval letter collection. Of particular value to social and legal historians, Joan Kirby's text contains a wealth of material unavailable to the editor of the previous edition of 1836. The collection offers a vivid day-to-day portrayal of a northern knightly family during a period of decline in the military function of knighthood. Parochial, proud, violent and litigious, as Percy tenants and feed officials their fortunes fluctuated with those of their patrons; loyalty to the Lancastrian cause in 1461, for example, cost both families loss of life, liberty and office. Two protracted lawsuits drew them deep into the complexities of the legal process and the political patronage on which they depended. The resulting correspondence with their lawyers constitutes a unique primary source for all scholars of medieval England.

The political journal of John Wodehouse, first Earl of Kimberley (1862-1902) is one of the finest political diaries of the last half of the nineteenth century. Born into an old Tory family, Kimberley followed his forebears in attending Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, but shocked his neighbours by adopting Liberal principles. As Lord Clarendon's protege, he was appointed minister plenipotentiary to Russia following the Crimean War, and under-secretary at the Foreign Office after his return (1859-61). With Lord John Russell's elevation to the peerage in 1861, Kimberley resigned, and shortly after began the journal that he regularly kept until his death in 1902. Uniquely placed as an observer, Kimberley was the only Liberal to serve in every Cabinet of the Gladstone/Rosebery era. The Kimberley Journal is replete with humorous anecdotes, information regarding policy development, and acute observations about politicians and political situations.

In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Coventry harboured a community of Lollards, adherents of medieval England's only popular heresy. Allowed to flourish relatively unmolested for decades, the Coventry Lollards came under close episcopal scrutiny in 1511 and 1512 when Geoffrey Blyth, bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, began a concerted effort to uncover and eradicate their community. This volume presents a remarkable record of the testimony compiled during Blyth's crackdown, along with all other surviving evidence for heretical activities in Coventry. Robert Cecil, son of Elizabeth's minister Burghley, was certainly involved in their composition, which seems to have been written by those involved in English missions to France in the early 1580s. This book presents an edition of two treatises that examine the legal issues that arose during the Hundred Years War, namely the laws governing the succession to the French crown, English claims to territories within France, and the responsibility for the breeches of various treaties and truces. The first treatise, Pour ce que plusieurs, was written in 1464 by a French diplomat and administrator, Guillaume Cousinot, and is most famous for its part in establishing the myth that the royal succession in France was determined by a otiose law code of the Franks, the Salic Law. The second is an English response to these arguments, A declaracion of the trew and dewe title of Henrie VIII, written during the reign of Henry VIII (1509-1547). The declaracion provides valuable evidence of English reactions to the rhetoric and propaganda generated by the French crown at the end of the middle ages.

The seventh Marquess of Londonderry (1878-1949) held government posts in Dublin, Belfast and London. Controversial in his own lifetime, he oversaw the early years of both the Royal Air Force and Northern Ireland, and he was attacked as a 'warmonger' for his role at the World Disarmament Conference held at Geneva in the early 1930s. Published here for the first time, the diary of George Lloyd (1642-1718) presents a richly detailed account of the everyday life of an unremarkable man during two phases of his life: his attempt, between 1675 and 1678, to establish himself as a schoolmaster in Colchester; and the twilight of his career as a Customs officer at the Port of London in 1711-12. Virtually unknown to scholarship, Lloyd's diary is not a record of notable events, political upheavals, or religious controversies. Rather, it is a uniquely quotidian text consisting of regular daily entries documenting the activities and experiences of an individual far removed from - and largely unconcerned with - the great events of history. Jehan Creton accompanied Richard II on his expedition to Ireland in 1399 and witnessed his capture by Henry Lancaster, who usurped the throne to reign as Henry IV. Creton's account is of crucial importance for historians of the period, as he contradicts the official version of events in the Parliamentary Roll. Until now, historians have had to rely on a 200-year-old edition by an antiquarian with no specialist knowledge of Middle French: the Rev. Webb's edition of 1824 has all the disadvantages of a publication of that era. Creton's other known writings - the two epistles and four ballades - are edited here and his debt to Valerius Maximus in the epistle to the duke of Burgundy is identified for the first time. A complete translation has been added, plus quality reproductions of the original miniatures which Creton specified as an integral part of his work.

Governor Percy Kirke's Out-Letter Book, here transcribed verbatim and annotated, covers the terminal decline of English Tangier, ending just before the arrival of Lord Dartmouth's expedition charged with demolishing the town and evacuating all personnel. It contains 152 official letters mostly addressed to the Tangier Committee, the subcommittee of the Privy Council responsible for Tangerine affairs, and Sir Leoline Jenkins, secretary of state for the south. Although all matters of civilian and military administration, from the essential to the trivial, came within the governor's purview - there was little delegation - the weight of Kirke's correspondence traces the decay of both the town's military fabric and the soldiers' morale and effectiveness, and the impossibility of reaching a satisfactory modus vivendi with the leaders of the besieging Moroccan armed forces. The text is supported by a comprehensive biographical dictionary and histories of the rival armed forces.

Allen Leeper, Oxford undergraduate and future Foreign Office mandarin, wrote regularly to his family in Australia from 1908 until he left university in 1912. His letters, in Balliol archives and the State Library of Victoria, record his experiences at Balliol College, among a 'golden generation' decimated by the First World War, and on his extensive travels in Europe. They give a vivid picture of a continent on the eve of war, written by someone whose background afforded a degree of objectivity. Superficially, Oxford was still 'the apotheosis of the amateur', but Leeper's middle-class friends shared a progressive and socially responsible outlook. While he enjoyed college balls and tennis parties, his letters testify to a world shaken by political crisis and social change, and provide glimpses of emerging modernity, bringing out the complexities of a critical period in British and European history.

Published as a stand-alone edition for the first time, the 111 holograph letters (in Margaret's own hand) and 4 'hybrid' letters (written by a scribe, with a postscript or subsection by Margaret) form an unprecedented epistolary archive, featuring the largest collection of holograph correspondence written in English or Scots of any medieval or early modern queen. The letters chart Margaret's life as a late medieval queen, including the challenges she faced in negotiating her dual identity as queen of Scots and an English princess, and her role in Anglo-Scots politics and diplomacy in the early sixteenth century. A substantial introduction highlights the unique language of Margaret's correspondence and discusses the materiality and delivery of her letters.
