This volume presents the latest advances in statistics and data science, including theoretical, methodological and computational developments and practical applications related to classification and clustering, data gathering, exploratory and multivariate data analysis, statistical modeling, and knowledge discovery and seeking. It includes contributions on analyzing and interpreting large, complex and aggregated datasets, and highlights numerous applications in economics, finance, computer science, political science and education. It gathers a selection of peer-reviewed contributions presented at the 16th Conference of the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS 2019), which was organized by the Greek Society of Data Analysis and held in Thessaloniki, Greece, on August 26-29, 2019.

The IFCS federates the classification societies and the IFCS biennial conference brings together researchers and stakeholders in the areas of Data Science, Classification, and Machine Learning. It provides a forum for presenting high-quality theoretical and applied works, and promoting and fostering interdisciplinary research and international cooperation. This Brief is concerned with the connection between food packaging and the chemical composition of packaging materials. In terms of the food packaging hygiene, the influence of the containers on the contained foods is discussed. The book explores new and emerging risks related to food packaging materials in connection with the contained commodities. It also discusses the technology of production with relation to the chemical risk in a “Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point” (HACCP) investigation.

This Brief describes the chemical features of canned food products and gives background information on the technology of canning foods. It explains how canned foods are different from other packaged foods, and illustrates and discusses their unique properties, including risks and failures. Canned foods are usually considered to offer a particularly long shelf-life and durability. An understanding of their properties and influences on their durability is therefore of great importance in the industrial production, and this Brief offers a compact introduction to this topic.The authors focus on thermally-preserved foods. They explain that the right choice of thermal treatment method (e.g. pasteurisation, sterilisation) as well as process parameters (e.g. time, temperature) is additionally influenced by criteria such as pH, water content, the presence and concentration of fatty molecules, of calcium, etc. So-called ‘survival curves’ can help in determining themethodology of choice, and the Brief introduces the reader to this concept. The authors also address defects and failures. They introduce selected indicators, which can help identifying failures of the entire food/packaging system, and demonstrate how image and visual analysis can be applied in quality controls. This volume contains revised versions of selected papers presented during the biannual meeting of the Classification and Data Analysis Group of SocietA Italiana di Statistica, which was held in Bologna, September 22-24, 2003. The scientific program of the conference included 80 contributed papers. Moreover it was possible to recruit six internationally renowned invited spe- ers for plenary talks on their current research works regarding the core topics of IFCS (the International Federation of Classification Societies) and Wo- gang Gaul and the colleagues of the GfKl organized a session. Thus, the conference provided a large number of scientists and experts from home and abroad with an attractive forum for discussions and mutual exchange of knowledge. The talks in the different sessions focused on methodological developments in supervised and unsupervised classification and in data analysis, also p- viding relevant contributions in the context of applications.
