Auf ihrem 35. Kongress feierte die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS) ihr hundertjähriges Bestehen. Es galt, einen kritischen Rückblick auf die wechselvolle und auch problematische Geschichte der DGS zu verbinden mit aktuellen soziologischen Forschungen, neuen Fragestellungen und Theorien. Fraglos fordern „transnationale Vergesellschaftungen“ von einer nationalen Fachgesellschaft eine neue Ausrichtung und damit mehr als die bloße Übertragung überkommener Begrifflichkeiten, Forschungs- und Theorieansätze auf neue, globale Phänomene. Vielmehr geht es um eine bewusste Überprüfung, Weiterentwicklung und Erneuerung soziologischer Analyse. 

Der vorliegende Band enthält die Beiträge zu der Eröffnungs- und Abschlussveranstaltung sowie die Vorträge zu den Plenen, Vorlesungen, Foren, Festveranstaltungen, Author meets Critics- und Abendveranstaltungen. Die beigelegte CD-ROM enthält die Referate der Sektionssitzungen und Ad-hoc-Gruppen sowie die Beiträge zur Postersession.

Dass kulturelle Differenzen und darauf basierendes, wechselseitiges Nicht- Verstehen verantwortlich sind für soziale und politische Konflikte, gehört zu den Standardüberzeugungen unserer Welt. Diese wiederum beruhen auf einem Kulturverständnis, das Kulturen als Substanzen missversteht und glaubt, diese Substanzen wie je singuläre Entitäten miteinander vergleichen zu können. Eine solche kulturalistisch verzerrte Sichtweise verdeckt jedoch die eigentlichen Ursachen der meisten Kommunikationsprobleme: den Ursprung, die Wirkungsweise und die Labilität von Kommunikationsmaximen und existenziellen Hypothesen. – Unsere gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit: die pluralistische Verfasstheit moderner Gesellschaften, zwingt die Sozialwissenschaften, (1) die Substanzillusionen aufzugeben; (2) sich erneut den Grundlagen kommunikativen Handelns zuzuwenden und (3) aus dieser Zuwendung empirisch basierte Konsequenzen zu erarbeiten.

Für die visuelle Kommunikation und für das bildmedial vermittelte Wissen gilt wie für jegliche menschliche Kommunikation und wie für jedes historisch-gesellschaftliche Wissen: Wer kommuniziert und Wissen hervorbringt, weitergibt und deutet, trifft auf die Dialektik von Wissen und Nichtwissen, von Eindeutigkeit und Mehrdeutigkeit, von Evidenz und Täuschung. Die Beiträge des Bandes erörtern diese komplexen Ambivalenzen des Wissens. Sie stellen sich den spezifischen Herausforderungen der Analyse ikonischer Kommunikation und ikonischen Wissens und sondieren in theologischer, kunsthistorischer, medienwissenschaftlicher und wissenssoziologischer Perspektive die methodologischen Probleme und methodischen Grenzen der Bildinterpretation.

Im Ghetto, Durchgangs- und Konzentrationslager Theresienstadt sind, unter erzwungener Beteiligung der Deportierten, filmische Aufzeichnungen entstanden und unter dem Titel „Theresienstadt – Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet“ bekannt geworden. Als besonders perfider Teil nationalsozialistischer Propaganda wirken diese Aufnahmen bis in die Gegenwart nach: Leugner des nationalsozialistischen Genozids verweisen bis heute auf diesen Film. Im Rahmen des Sammelbandes wird die Sonderstellung Theresienstadts auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen beleuchtet. Neben der Analyse von Zeitzeugeninterviews finden sich soziologische, philosophische und geschichtswissenschaftliche Betrachtungen der Umstände, Zustände und Besonderheiten Theresienstadts.   

Utopian thinking and utopian designs ostensibly represent a belief in human progress. The starting point of utopias is almost always a bad present that is to be overcome. But in the 20th and 21st centuries, doubts are growing about a plannable future designed by enlightened reason, about the project of modernity. Utopias are answered by dystopias. This makes it clear: the basic motif of utopian thinking is the fear of an uncontrollable future, a fear that could perhaps be overcome by the principle of hope (Ernst Bloch), an amiable illusion.

Theauthor Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Soeffner is Professor Emeritus of General Sociology at the University of Konstanz, Senior Fellow and Board Member at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities Essen (KWI) and Permanent Visiting Fellow at the Forum internationale Wissenschaft of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

In the ghetto, transit and concentration camp Theresienstadt, film recordings were made with the forced participation of the deportees and became known under the title "Theresienstadt - A Documentary from the Jewish Settlement Area". As a particularly perfidious part of National Socialist propaganda, these recordings continue to have an impact to the present day: Deniers of the National Socialist genocide still refer to this film today. In this anthology, the special position of Theresienstadt is examined on various levels. In addition to the analysis of eyewitness interviews, sociological, philosophical, and historiographical reflections on the circumstances, conditions, and peculiarities of Terezin are included.
