Formal Methods for Open Object-Based Distributed Systems presents the leading edge in several related fields, specifically object-orientated programming, open distributed systems and formal methods for object-oriented systems. With increased support within industry regarding these areas, this book captures the most up-to-date information on the subject. Many topics are discussed, including the following important areas: object-oriented design and programming; formal specification of distributed systems; open distributed platforms; types, interfaces and behaviour; formalisation of object-oriented methods. This volume comprises the proceedings of the International Workshop on Formal Methods for Open Object-based Distributed Systems (FMOODS), sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) which was held in Florence, Italy, in February 1999. Formal Methods for Open Object-Based Distributed Systems is suitable as a secondary text for graduate-level courses in computer science and telecommunications, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry, commerce and government.
Code Chronicles
The Art of Storytelling in Software

To write effective code and applications, software engineers and developers have to be able to frame user/customer needs effectively, capture program requirements and use cases, and then develop suitable software architecture and code to meet the need. Code Chronicles: The Art of Storytelling in Software helps readers write better software by teaching readers how to write stories in the context of software development. The book explains the roots of storytelling, clarifies that storytelling historically has been a very powerful tool used to pass along knowledge, presents where storytelling is already present implicitly in software development, discusses how to make it more effective, and finally present experiences in storytelling from software engineering and other scientific disciplines, to foster a full understanding of its power. The authors comprehensively present the pivotal role of storytelling in writing software, and they explain how to do it in a simple, hands-on approach, also taking advantage of clear case studies written by experts in the field.Helps readers understand that stories are fully fledged tools to convey technical, managerial, organizational, and scientific knowledge, often more effective than formal languageExplains how to write proper stories to maximize their effectiveness in conveying informationPresents the different phases of software development where stories can be particularly useful

The last decade has seen exponential growth in the development of digital technologies. This has led to significant shifts in the political arena as well as in the economy, precipitating a series of revolutionary changes in the fabric of our societies, which have had far-reaching consequences and effects on the way we relate and connect to each other. Digital Transformation in Artificial Systems: Engineering Requirements and Political, Economic, and Philosophical Challenges focuses on analyzing the engineering requirements as well as the political consequences, overarching the philosophical and ethical implications of this transformation, especially in relation to its application in artificial systems. In this context, the concept of digital transformation (understood as the practice of redefining models, functions, operations, processes, and activities by leveraging technological advancements to build efficient digital environments) has become increasingly important. This book brings together key concepts, ideas, and frameworks related to this idea. It promotes an inclusive and responsible digital transformation capable of addressing the constraints on the global digital divide, deepening cooperation in digitization, industrialization, and innovation, while furthering our understanding of the ethical and moral challenges associated with such a development. The distinctive and most original element of the book is its interdisciplinarity. It will allow readers to gather crucial insights that will be instrumental to better understand the reach of the forthcoming AI revolution, its multidimensionality, and its potential impact on people and society.Provides a thorough exploration of digital transformation within artificial systems, covering key concepts, methodologies, and emerging trendsShows practical insights into implementing digital transformation strategies in artificial systems, with real-world examples and case studies illustrating successful applicationsCaters to a broad audience, including professionals, researchers, and students interested in understanding and implementing digital transformation in artificial systems

One of the most important reasons for the current intensity of interest in agent technology is that the concept of an agent, as an autonomous system capable of interacting with other agents in order to satisfy its design objectives, is a natural one for software designers. Just as we can understand many systems as being composed of essentially passive objects, which have a state and upon which we can perform operations, so we can understand many others as being made up of interacting semi-autonomous agents. This book brings together revised versions of papers presented at the First International Workshop on Agent-Oriented Software Engineering, AOSE 2000, held in Limerick, Ireland, in conjunction with ICSE 2000, and several invited papers. As a comprehensive and competent overview of agent-oriented software engineering, the book addresses software engineers interested in the new paradigm and technology as well as research and development professionals active in agent technology.

Since the 1980s, software agents and multi-agent systems have grown into what is now one of the most active areas of research and development activity in computing generally. One of the most important reasons for the current intensity of interest in the agent-based computing paradigm certainly is that the concept of an agent as an autonomous system, capable of interacting with other agents in order to satisfy its design objectives, is a natural one for software designers. This recognition has led to the growth of interest in agents as a new paradigm for software engineering. This book reflects the state of the art in the field by presenting 14 revised full papers accepted for the second workshop on this topic, AOSE 2001, together with five invited survey articles. The book offers topical sections on societies and organizations, protocols and interaction frameworks, UML and agent systems, agent-oriented requirements capture and specification, and analysis and design.

We welcome you to Coordination ’99, the third in a series of conferences d- icated to an important perspective on the development of complex software systems. That perspective is shared by a growing community of researchers - terested in models, languages, and implementation techniques for coordination. The last decade has seen the emergence of a class of models and languages variously termed “coordination languages”, “con?guration languages”, “arc- tectural description languages”, and “agent-oriented programming languages”. Theseformalismsprovideacleanseparationbetweenindividualsoftwarecom- nents and their interaction within the overall software organization. This se- ration makes complex applications more tractable, supports global analysis, and enhances the reuse of software components. The proceedings of the previous two conferences on this topic were published by Springer as Lecture Notes in Computer Science 1061 and 1282. This issue of LNCS containing the papers presented at Coordination ’99 continues the tradition of carefully selected and high quality papers representing the state of the artin coordinationtechnology. In responseto thecallfor papers, wereceived 67 submissions, from which 26 papers were accepted. These proceedings also contain abstracts for posters presented at the conference. This year’s program features invited talks by Rocco De Nicola and Danny B. Lange. Reading through the papers, we expect that you may be surprised by the variety of disciplines within computer science that have embraced the notion of coordination. In fact, we expect this trend to continue, and hope that you will contribute to the on-going exploration of its strengths, weaknesses, and applications.

This volume presents carefully refereed versions of the best papers presented at the Workshop on Models and Languages for Coordination of Parallelism and Distribution, held during ECOOP '94 in Bologna, Italy in July 1994.Recently a new class of models and languages for distributed and parallel programming has evolved; all these models share a few basic concepts: simple features for data description and a small number of mechanisms for coordinating the work of agents in a distributed setting. This volume demonstrates that integrating such features with those known from concurrent object-oriented programming is very promising with regard to language support for distribution and software composition.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Coordination Languages and Models, COORDINATION '96, held in Cesena, Italy in April 1996. Over the last few years, a new class of models, formalisms, and mechanisms for describing concurrent and distributed computations has emerged. A characteristic feature of these coordination languages and models is that they are based on (generative) communication via a shared data space. The 21 revised full papers presented were selected from a total of 78 submissions; also included are three invited papers and 10 posters. All in all, these papers report the state of the art in this young and active area of research and development.
