Accession to the EU in May 2004 was a historic milestone for the spatial and urban development of the new member states. This open access book is an exploration of city responses to migrants with a precarious status in Europe.

Where young people grow up makes a decisive difference to their life chances. Drawing on case studies from ten European cities, this book looks at how the local environment and the services available for young people affect their socialization. What comes to the fore are the local matters. On the one hand, there are experiences of discrimination and marginalization due to distance and isolation, decay and neglect but also related to piecemeal and top-down approaches to youth and social services. On the other, we find signs of positive transformation and drivers of social innovation: community building projects, the revitalization of abandoned places, appreciative approaches to servicing and a whole array of tactics that young people deploy to overcome their daily struggles.

In ganz Europa wird die Frage nach der Zukunftsfähigkeit der unterschiedlichen wohlfahrtsstaatlichen Systeme diskutiert. Gesucht wird unter anderem nach innovativen Ideen, die die Leistungsfähigkeit sozialer Dienstleistungen erhalten oder erhöhen können und im Sinne einer inklusiven Gesellschaft die Teilhabe aller Gesellschaftsmitglieder ermöglichen.Das vorliegende Werk präsentiert anhand von Text- und Videomaterial empirisch gewonnene Forschungsergebnisse aus ganz Europa und gibt eine Antwort auf die Frage nach Innovationen in sozialen Dienstleistungen.

Across Europe, there is an intense search for new and sustainable approaches to providing welfare. Demographic change, new social risks and other factors call for new ideas to maintain and enhance the performance and quality of social services and to enable the participation of all citizens in an inclusive society.Against this background, and based on the findings of the EU research platform INNOSERV and empirically obtained research results from text and video material, this book provides insights into current approaches and practices to improve and transform social services.

Die aktuellen Diskussionen zu Gesundheit im städtischen Raum knüpfen an Megatrends wie den demografischen und klimatischen Wandel an, thematisieren aber auch den Zusammenhang mit Migration, sozialer Ungleichheit und sozialräumlich unterschiedlich ausgeprägten Entwicklungsprozessen insbesondere in den Stadtregionen.

Dieser Sammelband vereinigt 21 Aufsätze zu drei zentralen und immer aktuellen Themenbereichen der Stadtpolitik und Stadtforschung: 1) Wohnen und Quartier, 2) Stadt- und Siedlungsentwicklung, 3) Raumbezogene Forschung und Reflexion.

Der Themenschwerpunkt des Jahrbuchs „Naturen – Kulturen in StadtRegionen“ knüpft an die anhaltenden inter- und transdisziplinären Debatten über Naturkonzepte und -gestaltungen an. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie sich Vorstellungen von „Natur“ und „Kultur“ in urbanen und regionalen Kontexten gegenseitig durchdringen, herausfordern oder neu konfigurieren. Damit greift der Band die Forderung nach einer Auflösung dualistisch verstandener Entitäten auf – hin zu einem Denken in relationalen, prozesshaften Zusammenhängen von „Naturen“ und „Kulturen“, das ökologische, soziale und räumliche Dimensionen miteinander verschränkt.Der Band versteht sich zugleich als Einladung zur theoretischen Reflexion räumlicher Kategorien im Spiegel von Naturen – Kulturen. Er fragt nach den Möglichkeiten einer integrativen Perspektive auf städtisch-regionale Entwicklungen jenseits dichotomer Denk- und Handlungsmuster.
