The Inner World of Research is a book about the joys and miseries of life as a researcher. Dealing with essential but rarely mentioned topics in the everyday life of a researcher, it focuses, in particular, on the role of emotions and social relations in research. It stretches from the individual researcher, to the ‘micro-cosmos’ of the research team and to the broader policy environment in which research takes place. Though based on autobiographical material from Stefan Svallfors’ long career as a leading social scientist, the book also derives from extended interviews with researchers from a variety of disciplines, and with authors, artists and musicians. It delves into the mysteries of creativity; the joys and frustrations of collaboration; and the role of fear, anger and boredom in the life of a researcher.

The work examines the metapolitics of the Second Cold War. The focus is less on the detailed analysis of diplomatic history and processes in international politics, and more on the underlying attitudes and ideologies that have generated and sustained Cold War 2. The work examines the definition of a Cold War and reasons for the persistence of this form of international politics, as well as the clash over interpretations of the causes of renewed conflict. The work then looks at how this Cold War is being conducted, including renewed militarism, the suppression of dissent, the decline of diplomacy and the reduced opportunities for dialogue. The instruments of the Cold War 2 include sanctions and the reinterpretation of history and memory wars. Many of the familiar methods drawn from Cold War 1 are now applied, but in novel ways to reflect technological change as well as the different ideological contexts. The position of the global South in this Cold War is examined, and the work ends with some reflections on possible ways this Cold War could end.

How did the rich countries really become rich?  In this provocative study, Ha-Joon Chang examines the great pressure on developing countries from the developed world to adopt certain 'good policies' and 'good institutions', seen today as necessary for economic development. His conclusions are compelling and disturbing: that developed countries are attempting to 'kick away the ladder' with which they have climbed to the top, thereby preventing developing countries from adopting policies and institutions that they themselves have used.

This book of essays brings together the author’s most recent reflections on Wittgenstein’s philosophy as well as some earlier essays that seem worth preserving for historical reasons, as they involve information about personal relationships otherwise not easily retrievable by future chroniclers. It is the concluding complement of the author’s previous two volumes of essays: Wittgenstein: Connections and Controversies (2001) and Wittgenstein: Comparisons and Context (2013), which together form a trilogy of collected papers that represent his decades-long endeavor to understand and give adequate description and defense of the thought of the first philosopher of his age.

World leaders have made a forceful statement that climate change is the greatest challenge facing humanity in the 21st century. However, little progress has been made in implementing policies to address climate change. In Climate Uncertainty and Risk, eminent climate scientist Judith Curry shows how we can break this gridlock. This book helps us rethink the climate change problem, the risks we are facing and how we can respond to these challenges. Understanding the deep uncertainty surrounding the climate change problem helps us to better assess the risks. This book shows how uncertainty and disagreement can be part of the decision-making process. It provides a road map for formulating pragmatic solutions. Climate Uncertainty and Risk is essential reading for those concerned about the environment, professionals dealing with climate change and our national leaders.

What is the relevance of Luc Boltanski’s ‘pragmatic sociology of critique’ to central issues in contemporary social and political analysis? In seeking to respond to this question, this book contains critical commentaries from prominent social theorists attempting to map out the influence and broad scope of Boltanski’s oeuvre.

This book presents the most comprehensive study of the Waffen-SS until this date. Based on archival studies done in more than 20 archives in 13 different countries over a period of 5 years the book covers the entire history of the Waffen-SS and follows the post-war fate of the SS-veterans as well. The evolution of the Waffen-SS is analysed with special emphasis on the role of Nazi ideology, war crimes and atrocities, as well as the unique multi-ethnic and transnational character of the organization.

This book explores the emergence of the first bible, with particular focus on second-century Scripture, the earliest New Testament, and the canon formation process. The fourth-century Codex Sinaiticus, which contains the earliest extant complete New Testament, is used as a template to detect textual features of second- to fourth-century scripturality. What does this luxury manuscript, kept at the British Library, reveal about Christianity’s literary journey from oral gospel message to canonical text? What does it tell us about nascent Christianity as a “bookish” religious movement? A wide range of textual-interpretative, ritual, and paratextual aspects of the Christian Scriptures are discussed throughout the book as well as their impact on the wider Roman and Medieval literary cultures, and beyond.

Provides a comprehensive multinational analysis of evidence based policy making, examining how evidence is defined, interpreted, and used across professions, governance systems, and leadership contexts to shape public policy and legislation. The book begins with an introduction of the author and his qualifications for writing it. The ubiquity of policy along with the policy process is described and policy is defined. Why policies fail is addressed. Policy making in education and medicine is presented and various influencers are identified, and a diagram of the hierarchy of policies is shown.Next, the historical origins of policies are traced back to ancient family groups in China and the emergence of cities and democracies in Greece. The impact of the Industrial Revolution and Age of Revolution are discussed. Policy development both within and outside government is examined. What follows is an analysis of the role of evidence in policy formation with a depiction of effective use of evidence. Distortions of evidence are detailed and policy-making tools such as cost-benefit analysis and statistical tools are discussed. A section on the problems of such analysis is provided along with recommendations on which tools to use.Scientific evidence in policy is then presented with a discussion of how scientists like Darwin use the scientific method to make conclusions. The reactions of office holders is discussed. The rise in the influence of science on public policy is then explained, especially during world wars with the development of atomic weapons. Ethical issues are presented and the matter of becoming an influential scientific advisor is discussed.Journalistic and communication based evidence follows with a history of print and broadcast media. Journalism during war is described and the interaction between the media and legislators is offered. Finally, an interview with journalism professor Sam Freedman provides in-depth insight on chief ethical issues. For the topic of the influence of law and the judiciary, the book details how close the connection is with policy making. A review of the English foundations of law and the rapid growth of courts demonstrates its importance on policy making. Many office holders are lawyers and standards for evidence are high and thus applicable in legislation.Other policy influencers are introduced next. These are deep rooted and are religion, business, unions, and education. The histories of each in policy making are described along with an evaluation of their relative power in evidence based policy. The overlay of policy creation in the context of strategy, strategizing, and structure is the next topic. The evolution of long-term planning to strategic planning to strategic management is plotted along with an analysis of how policy can be implemented. Strategizing is described as the active attention to strategic opportunities by involving all members of an organization. A series of strategic analysis tools are introduced to the reader. For structure, a comparison by presidential and parliamentary systems is offered regarding policy formation. The last part of the book deals with communications in general, management, leadership, and recent developments in global policy issues. The value of the policy memo and importance of Op Ed’s media conferences, town halls, and petitions are described. The history of management is detailed along with how that influences public administration especially in bureaucracy. The advantages of servant leadership is described. Finally, seven major international policy issues that need to be addressed are presented.

Manfred Thierry Mugler encapsulates the notion of a fashion auteur. The late designer constructed a phantasmagoric fashion house that championed diversity, creative ingenuity and the subversion of societal norms across multiple disciplinary forms. Moving across creative fields seamlessly, he created an archive of work that is as eclectic as it is recognisable. This multiplicity of form includes a large archive of Thierry Mugler couture, ready-to-wear, perfumes, costume designs, film and photography. Mugler’s designs championed and subverted the feminine form, exaggerating and enhancing it in all its manifestations. The designer was a champion for diversity on the runway, being one of the first to include drag artists and trans models to present his collections. Fashion became Mugler’s tool for expression and communication, a site for spectacle, metamorphosis and transgression. This book explores his spectacular archive of work, focusing on some of the expansive collections and collaborations that have become synonymous with his creative identity.

Cultural Arsenal: The Weaponisation of Heritage in Armed Conflict addresses head-on a dark and often overlooked aspect of cultural heritage: its weaponisation by both state and non-state actors. This new book is intended to show how cultural heritage has been used as a tool or weapon in contemporary conflict and geopolitical competition and how heritage has been manipulated and exploited throughout history to achieve strategic goals. The role of propaganda in the weaponisation of cultural heritage is also explored by examining how state actors use media and education to shape narratives around cultural heritage, often to justify territorial claims or suppress minority cultures.

'London: A Pilgrimage' was conceived in 1868 by the journalist and playwright Blanchard Jerrold. Accompanied by the famous artist Gustave Doré, Jerrold prowled every corner of the heaving metropolis, sometimes with plain-clothes police for protection. 'London: A Pilgrimage' is a forgotten classic of social journalism, a frank and brutal look at the poverty striken, gin-swilling London of the nineteenth century, written in a perceptive, bold and gripping style.

‘The Art and Ideology of the Trade Union Emblem, 1850–1925’ is a groundbreaking book that considers trade union emblems and banners as art objects in their own right. It studies their commissioning, their designers and the social conditions and gender relations that they knowingly or unwittingly reveal. The volume celebrates working-class culture and shows how it could be both innovative and derivative. Annie Ravenhill-Johnson’s exploration of the artistry of the emblems – the art of and for the toiling masses – sets these images of labour in their historical, cultural and ideological context.

This collection brings together work on the relevance of Wittgenstein’s philosophy to the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Over two volumes, our contributors cover a wide range of topics from different disciplinary approaches. In this Volume (I), contributions are centred on two major themes in the philosophy of AI: questions of mind and language. Contributions include chapters on AI thought, intentionality, logic and language, as well as the relationship between Wittgenstein’s thought and Turing’s.

Conditions of malnutrition, conflict, or a combination of both characterize many Arab countries, but this was not always so. As in much of the developing world, the immediate post-independence period represented an age of hope and relative prosperity. But imperialism did not sleep while these countries developed, and it soon intervened to destroy these post-independence achievements. The two principal defeats and losses of territory to Israel in 1967 and 1973, as well as the others that followed, left in their wake more than the destruction of assets and the loss of human lives: the Arab World lost its ideology of resistance. The Unmaking of Arab Socialism is an attempt to understand the reasons for Arab world's developmental descent from the pinnacle of Arab socialism to its present desolate conditions through an examination of the post-colonial histories of Egypt, Syria, and Iraq.

This volume brings together original and timely writings by internationally renowned scholars that reflect on the current trajectories of global capitalism and, in the light of these, consider likely, possible or desirable futures. It offers theory-informed writing that contextualizes empirical research on current world-historic events and trends with an eye towards realizing a future of human, social and economic betterment.

The book presents recent research on the geographical, historical, and semantic trajectories of some artifacts belonging to two Brazilian Indigenous populations, but kept and exhibited in two ethnographic museums in Vienna and Lisbon. Located within the debate on the rethinking and decolonization of ethnographic collections and museums, its main objective is to investigate the role of material culture in the production of a stereotyped imaginary of the Amazonian Indigenous groups Kambeba and Munduruku. On one hand, it analyzes eighteenth-and nineteenth-century chronicles and illustrations produced by the naturalists who collected the objects in question; on the other hand, it pays attention to the perspectives of contemporary members of the local communities on such processes and on the ways in which their heritage has been and is being treated.

The Anthem Beckett Studies Reader, edited by S. E. Gontarski, is an indispensable guide to the restless, rigorously inventive field of Beckett studies—one that mirrors Samuel Beckett’s own refusal of settled meanings and stable forms. Bringing together landmark essays and influential critical interventions, this collection maps the evolution of Beckett scholarship across literature, theater, media, philosophy, and performance, revealing how Beckett’s work continues to unsettle interpretive habits and disciplinary boundaries alike.

“The ‘Slumdog’ Phenomenon” addresses multiple issues related to “Slumdog Millionaire” and, in the process, provides new ways of looking at this controversial film. Each of the book’s four sections considers a particular aspect of the film: its relation to the nation, to the slum, to Bollywood and its reception. The volume provides a critical overview of the key issues and debates stemming from the film, and allows readers to reexamine them in light of the anthology’s multiple perspectives.

This book focuses on the Ranchi Indian Mental Hospital, the largest public psychiatric facility in colonial India during the 1920s and 1930s. It breaks new ground by offering unique material for a critical engagement with the phenomenon of the ‘indigenisation’ or ‘Indianisation’ of the colonial medical services and the significance of international professional networks. The work also provides a detailed assessment of the role of gender and race in this field, and of Western and culturally specific medical treatments and diagnoses. The volume offers an unprecedented look at both the local and global factors that had a strong bearing on hospital management and psychiatric treatment at this institution.

Tokyo Seven Roses' is set in Japan during the waning months of WWII and the beginning of the Occupation. It is written as a diary kept from April 1945 to April 1946 by Shinsuke Yamanaka, a fifty-three-year-old fan-maker living in Nezu, part of Tokyo's shitamachi (old-town) district. After the war, Shinsuke learns by chance that the Occupation forces are plotting a nefarious scheme: in order to cut Japan off from its dreadful past, they intend to see that the language is written henceforth using the alphabet. To fight off this unheard-of threat to the integrity of Japanese culture, seven beautiful women – the Seven Roses – take a stand.

‘Responsibility to Protect and Prevent: Principles, Promises and Practicalities’ explores the evolution of responsibility to protect (R2P), a principle which – according to its supporters – has evolved into a new type of responsive norm for how the international community should react to serious and deliberate human rights violations. Arguing that the R2P ethos has been misunderstood and used ineffectively, this work defends the validity of R2P and urges for a more practical understanding that moves beyond theory. The progression of R2P from an initial concept to formal ratification has been a very difficult one, with a great deal of disagreement over its validity as a substantive norm in international affairs. The key disagreement is not that protection or prevention are unimportant, but rather how the fine-sounding R2P principles are supposed to work in practice. This volume presents a number of important arguments that are directly related to the state vs. human security debate, with a critical analysis of the nexus between the protection verses prevention theses. Through the case study of the Libyan Crisis, Janzekovic and Silander offer an example of the R2P thesis in action, and support the claim that prevention should be more than an adjunct to protection.

This book explores the history of hypertext, an influential concept that forms the underlying structure of the World Wide Web and innumerable software applications. Barnet tells both the human and the technological story by weaving together contemporary literature and her exclusive interviews with those at the forefront of hypertext innovation, tracing its evolutionary roots back to the analogue machine imagined by Vannevar Bush in 1945.

This interactive guide serves to make glacial systems and landforms more accessible, as students use Google Earth and other satellite imagery to understand the patterns and processes found within glacial environments. Guided inquiry activities range from calculating the Mendenhall Glacier’s rate of melting to identifying erosional landforms in the Swiss Alps. In this way, the guide offers a virtual interactive experience in which students can visit and explore glacial systems and landforms in 3D. Through studying these images the student will not only start to recognize the forms commonly found within glacial landscapes, but also develop skills in map analysis and interpretation.

This book explores the multiple effects of globalization on urban and rural communities, providing anthropological case studies from postsocialist Bulgaria. As globalization has been studied largely in urban contexts, the aim of this volume is to shift attention to the under-examined countryside and analyse how transnational links are transforming relations between cities, towns and villages. The volume also challenges undifferentiated notions of ‘the countryside’, calling for an awareness of rural economic and social disparities which are often only associated with urban environments. The work focuses on how the ‘urban’ and ‘rural’ have been reconfigured following the end of socialism and the advent of globalization, in socioeconomic, as well as political, ideological and cultural terms.
