Understand the complexity of movement in this revised edition of the definitive guide to the physiology and mechanics of upright walking-now updated with 50% new material. Incorporates the Anatomy Trains model of human anatomy, plus the latest science on assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and sports medicine. The ability to walk upright on two legs is one of the major traits distinguishing us as humans, and yet the reasons for its development remain a mystery among scientists. In Born to Walk, author James Earls explores the mystery of walking’s evolution by describing the complex mechanisms enabling us to be efficient in bipedal movement. Viewing the whole body as an interconnected unit, he explains how we can regain a flowing efficiency within our gait-an efficiency that is part of our natural design. Based on Thomas Myers’s Anatomy Trains model of human anatomy as well as the latest science in paleoanthropology, sports medicine, and anatomy, Earls’ work demonstrates how the whole body collaborates in walking, and it distills the complex actions into a simple sequence of “essential events” that engage the myofascia and utilize its full potential. Offering a unique combination of anatomy, body reading assessment, and technique, this revised edition provides insight into new research on assessment, diagnosis, and treatment approaches. Earls offers a convenient model for understanding the complexity of movement while gaining a deeper insight into the physiology and mechanics of the walking process. This book is designed for movement therapy practitioners, physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, massage therapists, and bodywork practitioners hoping to understand gait and its mechanics. It will also appeal to anyone with an interest in evolution and movement.

Written for yogis of all levels, 'The Anatomy of Yoga Coloring Book' perfectly bridges the gap between anatomy textbook, yoga compendium, and interactive revision tool. The human body is a complex and fascinating machine. Author Jo Ann Staugaard-Jones illustrates just how clever it is by first breaking it down in to its component parts, and then putting it back together in its full glory within the context of yoga movement. Starting with a comprehensive examination of the nervous system, anatomical movement, and all the body systems, the book then truly comes to life as Staugaard-Jones presents over 50 popular asanas describing with color and artistry which muscles are being strengthened (contracting), which are being stretched (lengthened), and which muscles are working as stabilizers to support the pose. Test your knowledge as you color intricate black and white drawings of each asanaThe seven categories of asanas are presented with prompts to color relevant structures and functions, insightful technique tips, and anatomical nuggets that will enhance your understanding of the science behind your practice. You will learn not only the benefits of each pose but also the contraindications, relevant terminology, and how to vary poses where necessary. The healing heart of yogaWhat sets this book apart from others is its inclusion of the subtler realm of yoga - that which is referred to as 'energetic anatomy'. Understanding the unseen energies of the body in terms of fascia, bandhas, nadis, and chakras will take you beyond just muscle and joint mechanics, alignment and technique, and connect you more profoundly to the yogic way of life.

Located deep within the anterior hip joint and lower spine, the psoas major (usually referred to as just the psoas) is critical for optimal postural alignment, movement, and overall well-being. The psoas is the only muscle in the human organism that connects the upper body to the lower body, and its importance extends to the nerve complex and energy systems. As modern-day populations grow more sedentary and excessive sitting becomes commonplace, psoas-related lower back and hip pain are on the rise. Even the most active of athletes can suffer from psoas imbalance and pain. The Vital Psoas Muscle demonstrates how to keep the muscle in balance through specific exercises designed to strengthen and utilize this amazing muscle. The book discusses the vital role the psoas has in one’s emotional and spiritual state. The interconnection between the psoas and the root chakra is explored, along with yoga poses and postures that stimulate the psoas. Eighty full-color illustrations depict anatomical details and show the key stretching and strengthening exercises in this practical and comprehensive treatment of the most important skeletal muscle in the human body.

Physical therapists and athletes will appreciate this thorough, illustrated study of the oft-overlooked gluteal muscles and their connection to the greater body In The Vital Glutes, author and respected bodywork specialist John Gibbons looks at one of the most neglected areas of the body: the gluteal muscles. He takes readers on a fascinating journey of enlightenment, teaching us to recognize pain and dysfunctional patterns that arise from the gluteal muscles. Gibbons addresses such questions as these: Why do the glutes potentially cause pain and dysfunction in distant sites of the body? How does the gait pattern contribute to pain and dysfunction? And how can the application of gluteal-specific muscle energy techniques aid full-body well-being? In addition, he provides step-by-step techniques to identify and correct a number of impaired patterns as well as functional gluteal exercises that promote recovery. With full-color photographs and illustrations, the book demonstrates how to perform functional assessment testing for the muscles of posture that can become chronically tight-a principal causative factor in dysfunctional glutes. Therapeutic techniques, including gluteal exercises, show how to correct dysfunction and reduce pain. This book will be of great value to physical therapists, athletes, and anyone interested in bodywork.

A paradigm-shifting, integrative approach to understanding body movementThe ability to move with efficiency and agility has been an essential component to our evolution and survival as a species. It has enabled us to find food, fight threats, flee danger, and flourish both individually and collectively. Our body’s intricate network of bones, muscles, tissues, and organs moves with great complexity. While traditional anatomy has relied on a reductionist frame for understanding these mechanisms in isolation, the contributors to Movement Integration take a more systemic, integrative approach. Ensomatosy is a new paradigm for comprehending movement from the perspective of the body s entirety. The body's many systems are understood as synchronized both internally and externally. Drawing on expertise in physiotherapy, somatics, sports science, Rolfing, myofascial therapy, craniosacral therapy, Pilates, and yoga, the authors assert that a more comprehensive understanding of movement is key to restoring the body s natural ability to move fluidly and painlessly. With over 150 colour images, the Color Illustration Model provides a visual tool for understanding how joints interact with surrounding structures (rather than in isolation). This is an ideal book for physiotherapists, massage therapists, structural integrators, coaches, as well as yoga and Pilates instructors.

A must-have book for understanding one of the most fundamental areas of physical therapy: the nervous system and its relationship to musculoskeletal pain Osteopath, lecturer, and author John Gibbons offers an accessible introduction to the peripheral nervous system (PNS). In addition to offering real-world case studies and guidelines for hands-on work with clients and patients, The Vital Nerves demystifies everything from diagnosing nerve conditions to understanding how cells communicate. Gibbons provides critical insights into the structure and functions of the PNS; the body's response to stimuli and how it knows what to do; the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems; the stress response; and the use of reflex testing to aid in diagnosing conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and paresthesias. The Vital Nerves addresses practical, common considerations such as these: Assessing the nervous system using a patella (reflex) hammer, myotome (muscle) testing, and dermatome (sensory) testing Determining whether pain in the posterior part of the thigh is caused by the sciatic nerve, the piriformis, or simply a hamstring strain Deciding at what level a disc may have herniated Differentiating between upper and lower motor neuron disorders Knowing what to do with the findings of your neurological assessment and the circumstances under which to refer patients to a specialist The Vital Nerves is a comprehensive road map to the functional anatomy of the nervous system. Enriched with anatomical drawings and detailed explanations, it explains neurological testing, common neuropathies, and differential diagnoses. It is an indispensable resource for physical therapists and bodywork practitioners.

Countering the oversimplified teaching of musculoskeletal anatomy via static positions, James Earls argues for a novel approach. He calls for new tools and vocabulary to observe and articulate anatomy in motion and posits that observing varied bodies in different environments should refine our anatomy understanding.Earls explores the profound effects of understanding fascial tissue interconnectedness-described as anatomy trains, myofascial chains, meridians, or slings-on our anatomical knowledge. He delves into the concept of tensegrity, emphasizing its contribution to our appreciation of the intricacy and interdependence of real-world body movements.By situating the different theories and metaphors of myofascial continuities against the context of common real-life movements such as sports exercises and yoga asanas, Earls describes the utility and application of each theoretical system to many different situations and issues.Using up-to-date research, Earls digs into important questions for physical and manual therapists: which tissues really are contiguous? Does continuity of tissue actually show or demonstrate transmission of force and communication along those lines? And does fascial tissue have to be continuous for the body to actually transfer force?Accessibly written and fully illustrated, Functional Anatomy of Movement offers practical applications for physical therapists, chiropractors, and bodyworkers, as well as new tools for teachers of yoga and Pilates to develop a deeper understanding of anatomy and movement.

A holistic, in-depth guide to understanding core strength for therapists, movement professionals, and serious exercise enthusiasts seeking advanced insights into functional training for mental and physical health. Health magazines, fitness class instructors, and YouTube exercise experts frequently speak of the importance of a strong “core,” the muscles at our body’s center that provide stability and support our movement. We know that improved core function can reduce symptoms of low back pain, pelvic pain, incontinence, and breathing issues. But while the core may be well known, it is still poorly understood: There is no universally agreed-upon definition of the core or the muscles it comprises.Core: A Science-Backed Approach to Exercising and Understanding Our Central Anatomy adopts a holistic yet practical approach to demystifying the core, examining this crucial muscle group for its physical importance to bodily movement as well as our emotional and spiritual center. Physical therapist Owen Lewis digs into a wide range of metaphors and frameworks used to understand the core-from the Japanese concept of hara, a central storehouse of energy, to the set of specific muscles referenced in gyms and fitness studios everywhere. While physical therapy and core-exercise regimens tend to emphasize strength building and stable posture, Lewis argues for an approach that is also flexible, fluid, and adaptable: The same exercises may not be appropriate for every person and may need to be changed up over time. In some cases, a “weak” core may be the result of muscles that are overworked and stressed, and “good” posture may create more pain than it prevents. Lewis clearly explains how the core works to manage and transfer the force of movement through the center of the body, building on principles of biotensegrity-how the tension and compression of different muscles creates a balanced structure that distributes stress and strain. The final chapters of the book provide a range of useful, functional training exercises suitable for lay readers but especially helpful as examples for therapists and trainers to use with clients. Lewis emphasizes functional training and the underlying principles of core-specific exercises, providing the groundwork for tailored, individual training to improve core function. Supplemented throughout with color photos and a diverse range of models, Core makes it easy to understand the anatomy of this crucial region of the body, as well as key principles for effective and safe exercises and training regimens.
