Imagery rescripting (IR) is a therapeutic technique that allows problematic events to be retrieved from memory and modified in positive directions. This complete manual for practitioners offers a clear and well-organized introduction to how IR can be applied in the treatment of personality disorders and other problems. It explores the various ways in which the technique can be utilised - how imagery exercises can provide insight into present problems via events of the past, how the therapist can rescript images in the early stages of treatment, and how clients can learn to rescript images themselves as the therapy progresses. The use of IR to prepare clients for future trigger situations is also discussed. Each step is illustrated with examples from practice, and a number of clinical pitfalls are considered - including clients who cannot create images, clients with a critical attitude, and clients who struggle with feelings of guilt during the rescripting process.

Chairwork is a therapeutic technique that allows clients to create distance between themselves and problematic beliefs, events, memories, individuals and patterns of responding. Although chairwork has been used in various therapeutic frameworks for decades, it is as part of schema therapy (ST) that it has recently taken a big step forward. This new title in the Schema Therapy Approaches and Resources series is a practical guide for therapists who want to learn to apply chairwork in their own practice. It also offers tools for those who already have some experience with this technique, as well as advice on further techniques to make working with chairs more effective in challenging situations. A final chapter looks at pitfalls for therapists, with guidance for recognizing and dealing with a wide range of challenging situations that occur in clinical practice.

Supportive Clinical Supervision is the first systemic, evidence-based guide to the principles and practices of restorative clinical supervision, an organisational tool for reducing employee stress, promoting positive outcomes, and enhancing the emotional well-being of people at work. It provides employees with a safe, confidential space to discuss the impact of work pressures, process challenging emotional aspects of their roles and reflect on work-life balance, and it is widely accepted as an effective means to maintain well-being and boost resilience in healthcare work. In practice, however, the availability of restorative supervision to workers is often haphazard or superficial, with the growing recognition of supervision s wider role in professional development yet to extend to its potential as a tool for enhancing staff well-being. Tackling this issue, Supportive Clinical Supervision presents the most up-to-date theory and practical guidance on how people cope with the diverse challenges they encounter in their work as healthcare professionals, and how their employers can help.

Schema Therapy, Step by Step is a practical guide to understanding schema therapy and applying it with clarity and confidence. The authors explain the basics of schema therapy theory - how unmet core emotional needs shape early maladaptive schemas, coping responses and modes, and how these patterns lead to longstanding psychological difficulties. They also provide detailed descriptions of schemas, modes and emotional needs, alongside step-by-step guidelines for assessment, case conceptualisation and treatment across the initial, middle and final phases of therapy. Techniques such as imagery rescripting, chairwork, cognitive restructuring and behavioural change are illustrated through therapist-client dialogues and three running case studies, and the book also offers worksheets, mode models, safety plans and adaptations for diverse populations, settings and treatment formats including adolescents, groups and clients with intellectual disabilities.

This theoretical but highly accessible book helps develop understanding about the philosophy of recovery, what the supporting evidence is and how workers and managers can apply this in a more recovery friendly way as well as what they can do to assess and evidence these changes. It will examine evidence from a number of international recovery studies and examples of successes in the UK where established recovery communities and groups, some peer projects and some services that have changed their philosophy to a recovery-oriented one. Topics include: mutual aid and the history of the addiction recovery movement recovery and treatment recovery and public policy analysis of 'mature' recovery systems in England what works in recovery in the UK what now?

Coaching is an emerging discipline that is continually exploring new frontiers. An area of particularly fertile ground is cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Developed from behavioural roots by integrating cognitive models of behaviour, and since developed in a range of directions to place increased value on individuals’ histories, emotions and potential, CBT offers a host of interrelated, evidence-based approaches that draw on psychology and our knowledge of the brain to help people cope with psychological challenges. Adapting cutting-edge psychological science to the needs of a coaching audience, Third Wave Cognitive Behavioural Coaching shows how, by drawing on techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy (ST) and more, coaches can adopt a more holistic approach that takes account of the problem, the context and the unique individual.

Teaching and Learning English in the Early Years offers teachers an extensive repertoire of creative ideas and techniques to work with in the classroom. The A–Z format provides a memorable and easily-referenced manual for teachers, with a large variety of low-preparation, practical teaching ideas. Each one links clearly to a language point with easy-to-follow teaching notes. Each also links to a section providing further reflection and teacher development. The 26 chapters go from A to Z, each reflecting key areas in early years language teaching. They offer a combination of theoretical insight, methodological guidelines, and practical ideas for the classroom. There are chapters on classroom activities, plus key educational and developmental areas and areas of current topical interest. The range and combination of the chapters aims to broaden teachers’ understanding of what is involved in effective early years language teaching. It aims to raise their awareness of how to maximise children’s language learning in the context of their overall development. Each chapter starts with a quotation that is pertinent to the topic or theme. A concise and accessible introductory discussion then follows. This highlights relevant background theory and key methodological considerations, and sets the scene for the suggested practical applications which follow. Guidance is also in place to help teachers develop an understanding of how to differentiate their approach with younger and older pre-school children. At the end of each chapter, a professional development section includes questions for reflection as well as ideas to try out and share with other colleagues. The Glossary at the end defines any unfamiliar teaching terms. It provides a useful reference for child development and language teaching terminology that is used regularly throughout the book. This supports the professional development of early years language teachers in understanding and using the vocabulary of their profession.

Part of the How to Help series of books exploring issues commonly faced by children and young people at home and in school, The Gifted Learner offers an accessible introduction to how high ability students can best be supported to achieve their full potential. Gifted (or more able, or high potential) learners are often overlooked in education, partly because they are diverse and partly because they are seen as bright and thus able to cope without support. In fact giftedness does not mean consistent high ability; gifted children may not excel in all subjects, and many are emotionally immature. As a result they are vulnerable. Drawing on case studies to offer a complete guide to what giftedness is how it can be supported, Fidelma Healy Eames argues that gifted learners must be recognised, understood and nurtured holistically at cognitive and emotional levels - and shows how parents, carers, teachers and schools can help.

As attitudes to mental health shift, schools are taking the wellbeing of their pupils much more seriously. All schools in England are required to provide lessons on health and wellbeing; in addition, most now have a mental health leadership role. Yet mental health is far more than the absence of illness - it also means having self-belief and the resilience to cope with stress and change. To teach such skills, staff must equip themselves and their workplaces with the procedures, understanding and confidence needed to monitor mental health, share concepts effectively and act appropriately if issues arise. Mental Health and Wellbeing in Secondary Education puts all the information they need at their fingertips - with guidance on creating a culture of wellbeing, warning signs to look out for, and overviews of how a range of common mental health and wellbeing problems can be identified and managed.

Part of the How to Help series of books exploring issues commonly faced by children and young people at home and in school, Autism: How to Help offers a complete introduction to this complex and often confusing topic. A lack of clarity can arise for many reasons, including the broad spectrum of characteristics and symptoms that can be represented within an Austism diagnosis (ranging from the very severe, requiring 24-hour monitoring, to the mild but no less important, where the individual can be successfully included in education and society), and the many competing interventions and treatments all purporting to be successful. The authors, Jo-Ann Page and Gavin Reid show that it is up to us as adults to ensure that this is possible - and show how parents, carers, teachers and schools can help.

Tired of Anxiety is a step-by step guide for children on how to do the things that matter to them despite anxiety. Based on principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), the book uses evidence-based clinical techniques and describes them in accessible, child-friendly ways to ensure that families have a toolkit for working positively with anxiety over the long term. By acknowledging that difficult thoughts and feelings are a normal part of being human, rather than something we must try to stamp down or wish away, the authors normalise the everyday struggles of anxious young people so that children can learn to 'make friends' with their own anxiety and get on with the more important work of actually living and enjoying their lives. The text is presented in a visually appealing style, with frequent opportunities to engage with the material and a suite of supporting audio meditations.

Mindfulness offers individuals the means to enhance their well-being by changing the way they relate to challenging experiences. Mindfulness-based programs were designed to be taught in groups, and almost all trainees learn this way, yet there has been little research into the impact of the group on the overall learning experience and how this can be exploited to enhance outcomes for each participant. Based on the authors' 'Inside Out Group' (IOG) model, this book offers a clear and simple way to understand the complexities of group processes in mindfulness-based programs based on four key capacities: 1. Inside out embodying (non-judgemental present moment awareness); 2. Reading the group (understanding events based on group processes); 3. Holding the group (cultivating an environment to facilitate learning); and 4. Befriending the group (engaging the heart in mindfulness teaching).

Part of the How to Help series of books exploring issues commonly faced by childrenand young people at home and in school, Managing Stress and Distress offers anaccessible introduction to how heightened stress levels in young people can lead todistressed behaviour - and how to manage both. We have left behind a time whenschools found it easier to exclude 'difficult' children than understand them, but theevolutionary and psychological factors that often underpin stress responses and theirresulting problematic behaviours remain poorly understood. Offering a complete, compassionate guide to what stress is, how it arises, the purpose it serves and theissues it can cause, Stan Godek argues for a trauma-informed approach of managingshort-term distress while also reducing long-term stress levels via a regular practiceof mindfulness - and shows how parents, carers, teachers and schools can help.

Emerging language (EL) is any unplanned language item that arises naturally during lessons that the teacher then chooses to focus on for clarification or modification, and this pedagogy is gaining traction year on year. It originally stemmed from Dogme, a popular movement that basically suggested not using coursebooks or set texts in class at all and working with what the students and the teacher themselves provide. Emergent language takes on board lessons learnt from using Dogme and current teaching practices. However, working with EL is considered a very difficult skill to master, especially for newer teachers or trainee teachers. Therefore, it is not often included on training courses or discussed at length in training manuals for teachers. Working with Emergent Language seeks to close this gap by making teachers more aware of what EL is and how they can learn to work with it more effectively and confidently. This book starts by drawing on the literature and the authors’ own experiences to make the case that working with EL is essential for language acquisition to occur and therefore a skill that language teachers should possess. The case is backed up by research and data from observations to explore how experienced teachers work with EL at different stages of a lesson and why they do so. To show how teachers work with EL, you will be introduced to a new framework of teacher intervention types. This draws on previous frameworks plus the authors’ own terms created following their extensive research. Transcripts and classroom commentaries from genuine lessons show how these interventions are used by teachers and why.Part two of Working with Emergent Language provides awareness-raising, practice, and reflective tasks to help new and experienced teachers develop their skills with EL. Teacher trainers and educators can also use these tasks during courses, workshops, and observations programmes in schools. Through these tasks, new teachers will be able to work with EL earlier in their careers. Teacher educators can also more confidently introduce EL on their courses. Through the tasks and discussion in this section, you will learn why reflective practice is central to teacher education and development, and through the use of tasks explained in the book, teachers can also take control of their development much earlier in their careers. The final part of the book addresses typical questions and issues about working with emergent language that teachers often ask. They dispel common conceptions suggesting that working with EL is difficult or inappropriate in some contexts and situations.

Sometimes, we can all try so hard to avoid causing ourselves pain that we don't live our lives to the full - and people with intellectual disabilities are no different. Based on principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Living Your Best Life provides guided self-help materials for a person with intellectual disabilities to work through alongside a supporter such as a paid carer, family member or mental health professional. The tools and guidance help the individual identify what is important to them and move towards a life where worries and doubts do not stop them doing activities they enjoy or trying new things. Each chapter includes separate sections for supporters and for the person with intellectual disabilities (which can be read to them if necessary). The book also includes a wide range of exercises, graded by difficulty so as to be matched to an individual's specific abilities and challenges.

In her influential and successful book The Anger Box, expert practitioner Phoebe Caldwell shifted attention away from the surface symptoms of autism and towards understanding sensory experiences and alleviating the distress associated with them. 'The Anger Box' of the title was a drawing by William, then aged six, of the sensations he felt when he lost control due to sensory overload. The book ended with William's 'Good Box', representing his experience of calm and relief. Bringing together ideas and material from The Anger Box as well as the later Hall of Mirrors, Shards of Clarity (which explored sense of self), and integrating updates and findings from a further decade of autism research, The Good Box gathers and extends insights from a pioneer of the field now in her ninetieth year. It also reflects a further shift of focus away from distress and towards acceptance and more positive interpretations of autistic experiences.

With a focus on the use of systemic mind control in the context of cults and the associated trauma of this ritualistic abuse, this book addresses a gap in resources to provide training and therapeutic approaches to both those living with mind control and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and those who support them such as a carer, family member or mental health professional. DID is a condition that is provoked from the experience of being mind controlled, enabling abusers to manipulate their victims during and beyond the period of abuse, whilst simultaneously occurring naturally as a survival mechanism. Developed from both lived experience and expert knowledge from a specialist in trauma work, content covers therapeutic approaches such as attachment theory and trauma-informed care; established training approaches for support staff and personal survival stories. The book aims to inform and empower survivors and supporters and aid the journey towards the understanding and tolerance of a complex psychological condition.

Masking is a form of identity management involving consciously or unconsciously suppressing aspects of identity and action. Often seen in socially marginalised groups, it is found to contribute towards poorer outcomes for autistic people and is related to higher prevalence of suicidality, exhaustion & burnout, and mental health difficulties. Though masking has been predominantly framed as a social strategy to 'blend in' with neurotypical (non-autistic) people, emerging research suggests that masking can also form as a response to stigma and from traumatic experiences. Taking an intersectional lens to consider how autistic identity may interact with other aspects of selfhood, the authors will provide a holistic understanding of the most up-to-date evidence with the aim to develop solid knowledge and practice in health and education.

Elementary Communication Games 2.0 is the first title in the new generation of the Communication Games series. The idea behind this new generation is to be a go-to resource of communication games and activities, providing a wide variety of activities for communicative and interactive practice to help teachers get the most out of their learners in speaking tasks, and is designed to help them put the fun back into learning in meaningful and motivational ways. Earlier editions of the series have been best sellers globally and have already been translated into 12 languages. The new series takes on board feedback from these earlier generations and modern viewpoints, global issues and topical discussions, and current teaching practices into account, and adds an additional 20% of new games. It also explores how these games and activities can be used in both face-to-face classrooms and online, which often poses different challenges. Organised into 50 activities with varying time frames according to level and type of activity, each book in the Communication Games 2.0 series consists of comprehensive teacher’s notes with aims, language summaries and detailed procedure for each game or activity for both teaching face to face in class and live online; pages of photocopiable materials for each game or activity; and photocopiable rules sheets for the learners.Elementary Communication Games 2.0 has been specially written for beginners and elementary language learners at CEFR A1–A2 level – the tasks have been designed in such a way that only a very limited knowledge of the language is necessary to complete them. They can also be used with higher-level learners as revision or error correction of (a) particular structure(s) or (a) specific topic(s), or used as part of preparation for an oral exam such as Trinity GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English), grades 1–5. The games and activities are not designed to any one specific syllabus: teachers are free to select appropriate games to fit in with their own syllabus or extend topics from their coursebook, or indeed practice structures that have emerged from the learners’ own language input. Each game or activity is interactive and involves cooperation rather than competition – they all have a non-linguistic aim, such as matching, drawing, ordering, collecting, sharing information, in order to successfully complete the task. They have been carefully designed to involve intensive practice of a certain set of functions, structures and lexis, like giving personal information, using simple past or recapping food vocabulary, whilst bringing real-world tasks into the lesson. Each game or activity can be located via a structural and a functional index so that teachers can quickly identify their linguistic focus. They also have the added benefits of building good group dynamics through class cooperation and enjoyment, and inspiring learners’ creativity and invention, thereby giving learners a sense of achievement and a greater second-language identity. Each game and activity is written within a specific functional area and limited to one or two grammatical structures, a clearly defined lexical field and key vocabulary. They can be used with beginners right from the very first lesson. The games are arranged in approximate order of difficulty, following a traditional structural progression, although teachers may, of course, use the games and activities in any order, following their own syllabuses. If you are new to teaching, Communication Games 2.0 will support you on your way with realistic communicative, language practice. If you’re an experienced teacher, it will remind you of games and activities you haven’t used in a while and offer you fresh new ideas or topics to increase your repertoire.

The Communication Games 2.0 series is a collection of resources for English language teachers, and Intermediate Communication Games 2.0 is designed for language learners at CEFR B1-B2 level. Earlier editions of the series have been best sellers globally and have already been translated into 12 languages. Taking on board feedback from these earlier generations and modern viewpoints, global issues and topical discussions, and current teaching practices into account - including the dramatic rise of teaching online and hybrid lessons - the new generation of the series has emerged. The idea behind this new generation is to be a go-to resource of communication games and activities, providing a wide variety of activities for communicative and interactive practice during lesson time with the teacher as a guide, facilitator and linguistic coach, for both the live online, hybrid and face-to-face classrooms of today and in the teaching of tomorrow.Organised into 50 activities with varying time frames according to level and type of activity, each book in the Communication Games 2.0 series consists of comprehensive teacher's notes with aims, language summaries and detailed procedure for each game or activity for both teaching face to face in class and live online; pages of photocopiable materials for each game or activity; and photocopiable rules sheets for the learners.

Historically, there has been an expectation that autistic children and adults should conform their behaviour to social norms, with strategies and interventions centred around navigating spaces and situations with minimal damage. This person-centred environmental assessment and modification programme moves away from this, with the aim to provide information and tools for assessing and reflecting on features of the autistic person's environment to best support their comfort, autonomy and agency. Written as a collaboration between autistic and non-autistic professionals, the authors break down each environmental element (physical, sensory, emotional, communicative and social) by chapter and include checklists as reference points to equip the reader with a framework from which to begin. This accessible, strengths-focused approach to supporting autistic people across different areas of their life reflects a paradigm shift from one where autism is treated as a deficit or impairment to one of strength, acceptance and autonomy.

Creativity can be vital to mental health and well-being. Featuring case accounts from therapeutic journeys that have used creative approaches, Creativity and Cognitive Analytic Therapy explores how both novice and seasoned CAT therapists can engage relationally with their creative selves and in doing so enable a more open and flexible exploration with their clients and trainees. The book is structured in three parts. The first sets the scene by discussing creativity and play as an aspect of mental health. The second considers the creative as a freestanding therapeutic approach in forms such as dramatherapy and imagery work, or as a nonverbal means for accessing, expressing and healing trauma – with detailed techniques that can be integrated into practice. The final part looks at a variety of ways in which individual trainers and supervisors have merged their own interests and gifts with the CAT framework.

This handbook promotes a perspective shift within learning disability services that aims to move the focus of professional support away from diagnosis and identifying what someone cannot do, towards assessing andsupporting strengths and providing opportunities and resources to enhance people’s quality of life. Designed to be used both by facilitators and as a self-study guide for those who support people with intellectual disabilities, Enabling Capable Environments will provide direction to enhance practitioners’ skills and develop a more collaborative, hands-on leadership approach. The authors set out a unique framework that outlines the critical approaches that underpin enabling capable environments and how these can be implemented successfully.

Some individuals with intellectual disabilities experience pervasive patterns of feeling and thinking that affect the way in which they relate to others and understand themselves - sometimes so overwhelmingly that they find it difficult to navigate the daily challenges of life. These people can be very complex to support and few learning disability-trained staff have the skills to address their needs. This new and revised edition includes updated content to reflect developments over the last decade towards trauma-informed care, the neurodiversity movement and considering the term 'personality disorder'. Section one will focus on diagnosis, psychologically-informed approaches, how to provide positive support and facilitate collaborative working relationships between teams and services. Section two will provide practical, proven strategies for addressing specific issues such as suicidal behaviour, emotional distress and regulating impulses, and for promoting wellbeing for staff and those they care for.
