This volume collects Christine Sleeter's core work focusing on critical multicultural education, situating culture and identity within an analysis of power and racism. Multicultural education arose in the context of the Civil Rights Movement and, in its inception, shared with that movement a focus on eradicating both interpersonal and systemic racism. The problem this book takes up is that, over time, many people have come to understand and enact multicultural education in ways that evade grappling directly with racism. This dilution has happened for several reasons, including White teachers' rearticulations of multicultural education as "getting along" or learning to be colorblind and neoliberal reforms that have reduced it to a celebration of cultural diversity while maintaining silence about racism. This volume includes ten of Sleeter's articles that explicitly locate multicultural education within critical understandings of race, racism, and colonialism, offering both theoretical and practical discussions of what that means. Book Features:Brings together, in one volume, the full arc of work by a leading scholar in multicultural education.Offers a unique focus on why multicultural education needs to be critical and what it means to be critical.Directly connects theory with practice by offering vignettes of practice following theoretical or conceptual discussions.Examines how the power of Whiteness and racial capitalism has forestalled progressive education and social change.Spans multicultural education from its inception in the 1970s through the current attacks on Critical Race Theory, showing how it has been targeted, ignored, or misused.

In a sea of troubling reporting about education, teaching, reading, and the wellbeing of teens, Ivey and Johnston bring some good news that shows what happens when we stop underestimating young people. This accessible book offers an engaging account of a 4-year study of adolescents who went from reluctant to enthusiastic readers. These youth reported that reading not only helped them manage their stress, but also helped them negotiate happier, more meaningful lives. This amazing transformation occurred when their teachers simply allowed them to select their own books, invited them to read with no strings attached, and provided time for them to do so. These students, nearly all of whom reported a previously negative relationship with reading, began to read voraciously inside and outside of school; performed better on state tests; and transformed their personal, relational, emotional, and moral lives in the process. This illuminating book leads readers on a tour of adolescents' reading lives in their own words, offering a long-overdue analysis of students' deep engagement with literature. The text also includes research to inform arguments about what students should and should not read and the consequences of limiting students' access to the books that interest them through censorship.Book Features:Links young adults' reading engagement with socio-emotional and intellectual development.Provides nuanced descriptions of teaching practices that facilitate student agency in learning.Features student voices that have been absent in debates about what is appropriate for young people to read and under what circumstances.Connects student perspectives on reading, with positive outcomes of reading, to research from other disciplines.Illuminates the breadth and depth of the responsibilities of teaching English language arts.

Art educators strive to represent a range of cultures and identities in their classrooms, but how do they know if they are addressing differences responsibly? How can teachers ethically teach about places they have never been or cultures they are not a part of?In Art Education Beyond Good Intentions, Beth Link draws on her own classroom insights and missteps to guide teachers in analyzing and reimagining real art lessons with culturally sustaining tools. Hollow celebrations of cultural holidays and reproductions of cultural objects risk reinforcing the very stereotypes teachers aim to dismantle. Written by and for K–12 art educators, this book offers a toolkit that applies theory to practice in the art room, helping teachers shift from intent to impact. Beth invites teachers to move beyond the paralysis of what not to do and instead imagines a different kind of art education focused on curiosity, connection, and community.Drawing on theories in a range of disciplines and her own research and teaching, Link introduces 10 tools developed and tested by art teachers. Each chapter takes a familiar art lesson and puts it under the microscope, thinking alongside critical theorists to reveal what is really being taught. Next, readers are guided to apply each tool, reworking the familiar lesson to center students and be more inquiry-based, trouble-dominant narratives. As readers work through these tools, they will learn how to plan lessons that disrupt stereotypes and forge meaningful connections. Every tool includes a response from an art educator who offers another perspective drawing from their own practice.Thought-provoking and accessible, this book offers readers:A Theory-to-Practice framework that makes complex concepts accessible10 Adaptable Tools to analyze and rework curriculumTeaching Resources, including lesson ideas, discussion strategies, and contemporary artists to inspire students’ creativityCritical Responses from art educators from across the country working in today’s classroomsArt Education Beyond Good Intentions is an invitation to trouble the "good intentions" that hold us back from building a curriculum that questions power, centers students, and makes space for genuine connection.

Our democracy is in crisis. Both political trust and a shared standard of truth are broken. In this book, Walter Parker shows why and how a civic education can help. Offering a centrist approach suitable for a polarized society, Parker focuses on two linked curriculum objectives: disciplinary knowledge and voice. He illustrates how classroom discussion, alongside concept formation and deep reading, expand students' minds while developing their ability to speak with others and form opinions. When children come to school, they emerge from the private chrysalis of babyhood and kin to interact with a diverse student body along with teachers, curriculum, instruction, and the school's unique mission: education. Parker argues that these assets make school the ideal place to teach young people the liberal arts of studying and discussing public issues and academic controversies, both in and beyond school. The chapters in this collection, spanning 20 years and coming from one of civic education's most influential scholars, show that voice can be taught right alongside disciplinary knowledge. Drawing students into dialogue with one another on the curriculum's central questions is a teacher's most ambitious goal and, when it happens, teaching's greatest accomplishment.Book Features:Argues that the proper aim of civic education in schools is to shore up liberal democracy.Shows how discussion can be a main course, and not a side dish, of classroom instruction. Demonstrates how to use discussion to develop voice, defined as the freedom to make and express uncoerced decisions, and disciplinary knowledge, defined as the knowledge that results from a public process of error-seeking, contestation, and validation.Explains why students need to learn both disciplinary knowledge and voice if they are to take their place on the public stage and hold the "office of citizen" in a democracy.Treats subject-centered and student-centered instruction as partners, not opponents.

Students’ imaginations are often considered as something that might be engaged after the hard work of learning has been done. Countering such beliefs, Egan and Judson show that the imagination—one of the great workhorses of learning—can be used to make all learning and all teaching more effective.Through techniques that any teacher can learn and easily apply in any classroom, they demonstrate how and why imagination can be used across the curriculum and grade levels to make teaching and learning more interesting, engaging, and pleasurable for all. Teachers who use these techniques will discover the emotions, images, stories, metaphors, sense of wonder, heroic narratives, and other cognitive tools that can bring life and energy to their classroom. This practical handbook will help teachers learn how to use these enlivening techniques in their daily practice to stimulate students’ intellectual activity and growth.

Special 2018 EditionFrom the new Introduction by Michelle Fine, Graduate Center, CUNY :"Why now, you may ask, should I return to a book written in 1988? Because, in Maxine's words: 'When freedom is the question, it is always time to begin.'"In The Dialectic of Freedom, Maxine Greene argues that freedom must be achieved through continuing resistance to the forces that limit, condition, determine, and—too frequently—oppress.Examining the interrelationship between freedom, possibility, and imagination in American education, Greene taps the fields of philosophy, history, educational theory, and literature in order to discuss the many struggles that have characterized Americans’ quests for freedom in the midst of what is conceived to be a free society. Accounts of the lives of women, immigrants, and minority groups highlight the ways in which Americans have gone in search of openings in their lived situations, learned to look at things as if they could be otherwise, and taken action on what they found.Greene presents a unique overview of American concepts and images of freedom from Jefferson’s time to the present. She examines the ways in which the disenfranchised have historically understood and acted on their freedom—or lack of it—in dealing with perceived and real obstacles to expression and empowerment. Strong emphasis is placed on the focal role of the arts and art experience in releasing human imagination and enabling the young to reach toward their vision of the possible. The author concludes with suggestions for approaches to teaching and learning that can provoke both educators and students to take initiatives, to transcend limits, and to pursue freedom—not in solitude, but in reciprocity with others, not in privacy, but in a public space
