Världen var på många sätt en annan för 1000 år sedan, såväl i praktik som i tanke. Människan ansågs leva på en plats, "Midgård", i mitten av världen, omgiven av andra världar bebodda av andra makter. Där fanns gudar, jättar, dvärgar, alver och olika krafter som nornor och valkyrior. Dessa föreställningar rörde inte bara universums uppbyggnad, utan även mytisk geografi och själva samhällsordningen. I antologin Ordning mot kaos diskuterar arkeologer, religionshistoriker och språkhistoriker den fornnordiska världsbilden under fyra olika teman som inleds av frågan om vi idag över huvud taget kan tolka och förstå forntida uppfattningar. I följande avsnitt försöker författarna se sambanden mellan dåtida föreställningsvärld och ritualer, för att sedan studera människans placering och roll i den norröna kosmologin - exempelvis analyseras kön och sexualitet, och gränslandet mellan människa och djur. En avslutande diskussion tar upp de komplexa sambanden mellan den norröna kosmologin och den dåtida faktiska världen: Var det idén om en kosmologi som omsattes i praktiken eller var det verkligheten som födde tankebilden? Författarna i Ordning mot kaos är inte alltid överens om perspektiv och tolkningar. Sommaren 1767 påbörjade orientalisten Jacob Jonas Björnståhl (1731--1779) en resa som förde honom till Frankrike, Schweiz, Italien, Tyskland, Holland och England innan han sjövägen tog sig till Konstantinopel och så småningom Grekland, där han avled i dysenteri vid 48 års ålder. Hade det inte varit för tidningsmannen Carl Christoffer Gjörwell hade eftervärlden aldrig fått någon större kännedom om denna resa, men Gjörwell publicerade Björnståhls resebrev, till att börja med i sina tidningar och så småningom i en postum bokutgåva i sex volymer.

Björnståhls resa skulle vara i hela tolv år. Liknande europeiska resor är det många som har gjort både före och efter honom; det som gör hans färd unik är att den är så väldokumenterad. I sammanlagt 83 brev rapporterar han om praktiskt taget allt han ser och erfar. Han skriver om akademier, bibliotek och museer, om ryktbara byggnader och historiska minnesmärken, om lärda personer, författare och andra berömdheter som han lärt känna: Rousseau, Voltaire, Diderot, Goethe och många andra. Men dessutom delger han läsarna intryck från botaniska trädgårdar och naturaliesamlingar. Han skriver om odlingsmetoder och uppfinningar, hantverk och manufaktur. Starka naturintryck från Neapelbukten och Alperna är han mån om att fånga och förmedla. Han kommenterar också folkets sedvänjor i olika länder. Från det avlägsna Konstantinopel berättar han om islam och hur turkiskt levnadssätt skiljer sig från europeiskt och svenskt. I slutet av sin resa besöker han som den förste vetenskapsmannen någonsin de isolerade Meteoraklostren i Grekland.

Björnståhl framstår i de flesta situationer som öppen och villig att omfatta och förstå sådant som är främmande, och hans resebrev är en av de verkligt intressanta rapporterna från Europas metropoler på 1760- och 1770-talen: en på samma gång informationsrik och charmfull framställning från upplysningens tidevarv.

Björnståhls resa: Europa och Konstantinopel 1767--1779, där resebreven och Björnståhls gärning analyseras och kommenteras, är ett samarbete mellan forskare från olika humanistiska discipliner: litteraturvetaren Johan Stenström, romanisten Carla Killander Cariboni och nygrecisten Vassilios Sabatakakis som är verksamma vid Lunds universitet, samt religionsvetaren Catharina Raudvere som har sin sysselsättning vid universitetet i Köpenhamn.
