This book brings together leading scholars in Global Studies in Education to reflect on how various developments of historic significance have unsettled the neoliberal imaginary of globalization. The developments include greater recognition of inequalities and the changing nature of work and communication; the emergence of new technologies of governance; a greater awareness of geopolitical shifts; the revival of nationalism, populism and anti-globalization sentiments; and the recognition of risks surrounding pandemics and climate change. Drawing from a range of disciplinary perspectives, the chapters in this collection examine how these developments demand new ways of thinking about globalization and its implications for education policy and practice — beyond the neoliberal imaginary.

Expert contributing authors survey the development of multicultural ideals through art across different geopolitical contexts, highlighting how these ideas have challenged founding myths of the nation state. They analyse the subsequent adoption of multiculturalism by state agencies, leading to the emergence of new forms of welfare, education and culture services. Responding to populist scepticism surrounding the concept, the Companion underscores the dynamic contribution multicultural art and activism has made to the pursuit of social justice, highlighting in particular its links to Indigenous communities, cosmopolitanism and transnational spaces.

The Elgar Companion to the Arts and Global Multiculturalism is an essential resource for students and scholars of cultural studies, sociology, art history, migration, globalization and political theory. It is also a key resource for policymakers seeking to incorporate multicultural ideals into their work.

Governments around the world are trying to come to terms with new technologies, new social movements and a changing global economy. As a result, educational policy finds itself at the centre of a major political struggle between those who see it only for its instrumental outcomes and those who see its potential for human emancipation. This book is a successor to the best-selling Understanding Schooling (1988). It provides a readable account of how educational policies are developed by the state in response to broader social, cultural, economic and political changes which are taking place. It examines the way in which schools live and work with these changes, and the policies which result from them. The book examines policy making at each level, from perspectives both inside and outside the state bureaucracy. It has a particular focus on social justice. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students will find that this book enables them to understand the reasoning behind the changes they are expected to implement. It will help to prepare them to confront an uncertain educational world, whilst still retaining their enthusiasm for education.

Rizvi and Lingard''s account of the global politics of education is thoughtful, complex and compelling. It is the first really comprehensive discussion and analysis of global trends in education policy, their effects - structural and individual - and resistance to them. In the enormous body of writing on globalisation this book stands out and will become a basic text in education policy courses around the world.

In what ways have the processes of globalization reshaped the educational policy terrain?

How might we analyse education policies located within this new terrain, which is at once local, national, regional and global?

In Globalizing Education Policy, the authors explore the key global drivers of policy change in education, and suggest that these do not operate in the same way in all nation-states. They examine the transformative effects of globalization on the discursive terrain within which educational policies are developed and enacted, arguing that this terrain is increasingly informed by a range of neo-liberal precepts which have fundamentally changed the ways in which we think about educational governance. They also suggest that whilst in some countries these precepts are resisted, to some extent, they have nonetheless become hegemonic, and provide an overview of some critical issues in educational policy to which this hegemonic view of globalization has given rise, including:

These issues are explored within the context of major shifts in global processes and ideological discourses currently being experienced, and negotiated by all countries. The book also provides an approach to education policy analysis in an age of globalization and will be of interest to those studying globalization and education policy across the social sciences.

This volume examines higher education in globalized conditions through a focus on the spatial, historic and economic relations of power in which it is embedded. Distinct geometries of power are emerging as the knowledge production capability of universities is increasingly globalized. Changes in the organization and practices of higher education tend to travel from the ‘West to the rest’. Thus, distinctive geographies of knowledge are being produced, intersected by geometries of power and raising questions about the recognition, production, control and usage of university-produced knowledge in different regions of the world.

What flows of power and influence can be traced in the shifting geographies of higher education? How do national systems locate themselves in global arenas, and what consequences does such positioning have for local practices and relations of higher education? How do universities and university workers respond to the increasing commodification of knowledge? How do consumers of knowledge assess the quality of the ‘goods’ on offer in a global marketplace?

The 2008 volume of the World yearbook addresses these questions, highlighting four key areas:

The 2008 volume is interdisciplinary in its approach, drawing on scholarship from accounting, finance and human geography as well as from the field of education. Transnational influences examined include UNESCO and OECD, GATS and the effects of digital technologies. Contrasting contexts include Central and Eastern Europe, Finland, China and India and England.

With its emphasis on the interrelationship of knowledge and power, and its attention to emergent spatial inequalities, Geographies of Knowledge, Geometries of Power: Framing the Future of Higher Education provides a rich and compelling resource for understanding emergent practices and relations of knowledge production and exchange in global higher education.

This fascinating collection of original essays seeks to address the possibilities and dangers of young people''s transnational, commodified identities; how society and educational institutions might respond to these new identities; and the consequences for democratic practices and the public sphere. Drawing together contributions from the work of both well known and emerging scholars, this collection highlights the practices of youth’s identities in the context of broadly defined educative sites, including schools, media and popular culture, community organisations, cyberspace, music, and urban landscapes.
