This 1999 volume takes a critical look at the current divide over immigration policies. It hopes to shed light on the debate by bringing together papers that investigate the link between trade and factor mobility, particularly labour migration, from theoretical and empirical perspectives. It examines the substitutability between trade and migration, the impact of regional integration on the location of economic activity, the role of public goods provisions, and the political economy of migration. Several papers quantify the link between trade, trade policies, migration and income distribution in sending and receiving nations using econometric methods and general equilibrium simulations. They had the languages put into writing, described their grammar and lexicon, and worked towards a standardization, which often came with Eurocentric manipulation. Colonial missionary work as intellectual (religious) conquest formed part of the Europeans'' political colonial rule, although it sometimes went against the specific objectives of the official administration. In most cases, it did not help to stop (or even reinforced) the displacement and discrimination of those languages, despite oftentimes providing their very first (sometimes remarkable, sometimes incorrect) descriptions.

This volume presents exemplary studies on Catholic and Protestant missionary linguistics, in the framework of the respective colonial situation and policies under Spanish, German, or British rule. The contributions cover colonial contexts in Latin America, Africa, and Asia across the centuries. They demonstrate how missionaries dealing with linguistic analyses and descriptions cooperated with colonial institutions and how their linguistic knowledge contributed to European domination.

In 1996, the German Research Foundation (DFG) funded the Innovation College "Motion Systems" at the University of Jena in a coope- tion with engineers at the Ilmenau University of Technology. Thus, research was able to be intensi ed and extended. Of course, the whole spectrum of biologically inspired systems is much too wide, so the analysis was still focused on locomotion and manipulation systems. At this stage J. Steigenberger from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural S- ences at the Ilmenau University of Technology contributed important studies of worm-like locomotion systems with much dedication and technical competence. Moreover, he conceived and carried out a lecture series entitled "Mathematical Basics for Locomotion Systems", which was based on his evaluation of national and international research developments in this eld. I. Zeidis and K.Zimmermann contributed many publications on the mechanics of worm-like locomotion systems based on continuum and rigid-body models as well as asymptotic methods. Since 2004 the German Research Foundation has supported a series of projects led by K. Zimmermann dedicated to biologically inspired robotics. In addition to these activities, the Department of Technical Mechanics and the Department of Computer Application in Mechanical Engineering (M. Weiss) together with masters and doctoral students started the development of mobile robots for the RoboCup Small-Size League in 1998.

Die zunehmende Bedeutung des Supply Chain Management spiegelt sich in einer steigenden Zahl von Publikationen und Tagungen zum Thema wider. Eine zentrale Frage besteht darin, wie Wertschöpfungsketten gemeinsam auf Ziele ausgerichtet werden können, so daß sie ge­ meinsam ihre optimale Leistungsfähigkeit entfalten. Auch wenn einzelne Arbeiten zum Per­ formance Management in Wertschöpfungsketten bereits vorliegen, so stellt Klaus Zimmer­ mann mit der Supply Chain Balanced Scorecard ein Konzept vor, das die Anforderungen an die Steuerung von Wertschöpfungsketten umfassend berücksichtigt. Der Arbeit besticht sowohl durch ihre theoretische Fundierung als auch durch ihren Beitrag zur empirischen Forschung zum Supply Chain Management. Die beiden Fallstudien zeigen eindrucksvoll, welche Potenziale sich aus dem Einsatz einer Supply Chain Balanced Score­ card ergeben können, so daß Wertschöpfungspartnerschaften umfassend gesteuert werden können. Bisher liegen nur wenige Arbeiten zum Supply Chain Management vor, die Theorie und Praxis in so hervorragender Weise verbinden. Die vorliegende Arbeit bildet einen weiteren Baustein im Ausbau unserer Forschung zu Wert­ schöpfungsketten, die im Supply Chain Management Center der Carl von Ossietzky­ Universität Oldenburg von Dr. Stefan Seuring koordiniert wird. La política del lenguaje en Iberoamérica en los últimos 500 años ha sido caracterizada —con pocas excepciones— por la voluntad de extinguir las lenguas amerindias y de imponer la lengua castellana (y portuguesa) como medio de comunicación único. Sin evitarlo por completo, una resistencia continua por parte de los pueblos indígenas ha contribuido a restringir o a frenar este proceso en una medida considerable. Al mismo tiempo que parece acelerarse el proceso de extinción en los últimos decenios, se están perfilando posibilidades de una nueva política lingüística que podría contribuir al mantenimiento de estas lenguas. En este libro se analizan cuestiones éticas de la política y planificación lingüística y se presentan los argumentos que justifican la necesidad de una política de ecología lingüística, se hacen proposiciones de planificación lingüística concreta y de medidas a tomar en los ámbitos de la educación intercultural bilingüe, la modernización de las lenguas indígenas, la identidad étnica-cultural, y otros, aptos para garantizar el mantenimiento y la defensa de las lenguas amerindias y su coexistencia con el español. La discusión tiene como trasfondo la situación en los países hispanoamericanos, pero el enfoque es más general y los argumentos y propuestas pueden en cierta medida transferirse a situaciones similares.
