In crystal chemistry and crystal physics, the relations between the symmetry groups (space groups) of crystalline solids are of particular importance. Part I of this book presents the necessary mathematical foundations and tools: the fundamentals of crystallography with special emphasis on symmetry, the theory of the crystallographic groups, and the formalisms of the needed crystallographic computations. Part II gives an insight into applications to problems in crystal chemistry. New research on children's executive functioning and self-regulation has begun to reveal important connections to their developing social understanding (or "theories of mind") and emotional competence. The exact nature of the relations between these aspects of children's social and emotional development is, however, far from being fully understood. Considerable disagreement has emerged, for instance, over the question of whether executive functioning facilitates social-emotional understanding, or vice versa. Recent studies linking the development of children's social understanding with aspects of their interpersonal relationships also raise concerns about the particular role that social interaction plays in the development of executive function. Three key questions currently drive this debate: Does social interaction play a role in the development of executive function or, more generally, self-regulation? If it does play a role, what forms of social interaction facilitate the development of executive function? Do different patterns of interpersonal experience differentially affect the development of self-regulation and social understanding? In this book, the contributors address these questions and explore other emerging theoretical and empirical links between self-regulation, social interaction, and children's psycho-social competence. This monograph concerns the psychological processes underlying the development of executive function, or the conscious control of thought and action. It has long been clear that these processes change considerably in early childhood, transforming a relatively stimulus-driven toddler into a child capable of flexible, goal-directed problem solving. However, the nature of these processes has remained elusive. In a programmatic series of 9 experiments, the authors examine circumstances that help or hinder executive function in 3- to 4-year-old children. The results provide the basis for a revision of their Cognitive Complexity and Control (CCC-r) theory, according to which there are age-related increases in the complexity of the rules that children can formulate and use when solving problems. The revised theory (a) specifies more clearly the circumstances in which children will have difficulty using rules at various levels of complexity, (b) provides a more detailed account of how to determine the complexity of rules required in a task, (c) takes account of both the activation and inhibition of rules as a function of experience, and (d) highlights the importance of considering intentionality in the study of executive function.

This book deals with the use of aluminium for structural and non-structural applications and provides an introduction to designing structures made from aluminium or aluminium alloy elements. It comprises a ready reference to the material properties and behaviour of aluminium, and its use in structural design. In the context of information about the material itself, fabrication, structural design and corrosion, structural analysis, serviceability, element design and fatigue the author considers the strengths of designing with aluminium alloy members and how any weaknesses can be overcome. Reference is made throughout to EN 1999, Eurocode 9, and its design methods are discussed and illustrated. With most of its structural strength properties close to steel and with consideration for the special properties of aluminium alloys, there is considerable scope to make better use of this material in construction. Many years of working with aluminium have provided the author with the knowledge to avoid pitfalls and problems in design, fabrication and protection of structures, thus avoiding costly remedial work.

Angesichts des immer mehr anwachsenden Kenntnisstands auf allen na turwissenschaftlichen Gebieten erscheint es unumgänglich, die Wissensver mittlung auf generelle Prinzipien und Gesetzmäßigkeiten zu konzentrieren und Einzeldaten auf wichtige Beispiele zu beschränken. Ein Lehrbuch soll einen angemessenen, dem Studierenden zumutbaren Umfang haben, ohne wesentliche Aspekte eines Fachgebiets zu vernachlässigen, es soll traditio nelles Grundwissen ebenso wie moderne Entwicklungen berücksichtigen. Diese Einführung macht den Versuch, die Anorganische Strukturchemie in diesem Sinne darzubieten. Dabei sind Kompromisse unvermeidbar, manche Teilgebiete werden kürzer, andere vielleicht auch länger geraten sein, als es dem einen oder anderen Fachkollegen angemessen erscheinen mag. Chemiker denken überwiegend in anschaulichen Modellen, sie wollen Strukturen und Bindungen "sehen". Die moderne Bindungstheorie hat sich ihren Platz in der Chemie erobert, sie wird in Kapitel 9 gewürdigt; mit ihren aufwendigen Rechnungen entspricht sie aber mehr der Denkweise des Physikers, außerdem ist sie oft noch unbefriedigend, wenn es darum geht, strukturelle Details zu verstehen oder gar vorauszusagen. Für den Alltags gebrauch des Chemikers sind einfache Modelle, so wie sie in den Kapiteln 7, 8 und 12 behandelt werden, nützlicher: "Der Bauer, der zu Lebzeiten ernten will, kann nicht auf die ab-initio-Theorie des Wetters warten. Che miker, wie Bauern, glauben an Regeln, verstehen aber diese listig nach Bedarf zu deuten" (H.G. von Schnering [86]).
