In this volume of key essays Morin turns his attention to the technical and philosophical underpinnings of complexity theory and applies it to a wide-ranging number of issues. These essays will stimulate the critical debate within complexity circles, and is essential reading for anybody interested in our complex world and how to live in it.

In this short and widely hailed masterpiece, Edgar Morin, one of the leading figures in European thought, challenges us to think differently about our past, our present, and our future. Morin points to the development of a planetary culture that is not homogenizing or fragmented, and the need to recognize complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity as potential sources of creativity, learning, and transformation. Given the uncertainty of our journey, Morin presents ""complex thought"" as a way to overcome the ""crisis of the future,"" and stresses the importance of solidarity. This book is a passionate and compelling summation of Morin's synthetic vision of our planetary history and collective destiny. What most distinguishes it is the manner in which it sustains a truly planetary perspective on the complex factors- ecological, technological, social, psychological- which might facilitate, as they threaten to abort, a nascent humanity.

Contemporary theorising about globalisation processes has only recently come to acknowledge the crucial role of media systems, a theme long familiar to researchers within communications. Thus this volume situates media forms and processes as central foci of globalisation processes and gives communications researchers a chance to respond to the theories often devised by those without any intimate involvement in communications theory or practice. The responses are loud and varied. The first half of the book clusters theoretical critiques and embellishments of globalisation theory as well as offers some alternative theoretical models for examining current communications and cultural practices in the unfolding new world system. Considerable attention is paid to unpacking notions of a ""transnational public sphere"", ""global civil society"", and ""solidarity"", and examining the role that media play in structuring both potentially hegemonic practices as well as alternative practices. The second half clusters a variety of case studies exploring different facets of the dynamics of globalisation. Three chapters focus on specific media forms such as the examination of music, language, and news. A last chapter explores the notion of solidarity in a different way: how international organisations such as Amnesty can try to influence the news agenda to mobilise transnational public sympathy for an oppressed group, specifically street children in Brazil. The introduction and conclusion, each written by one of the editors, provide contextualisation and development of the debates, and focus on further issues for theoretical development and empirical research.

Electronic distance study represents a novel and growing instructional environment for adult students. ""Alone But Together"" centres on the student experience with distance courses offered through electronic communications. After introducing conceptually the online mode of distance study in higher education, it describes a range of adult distance students, the context at home or at work in which they study, and their perceptions of the various aspects of the ""electronic seminar"" such as interactivity, textual ambiguity, pacing, asynchronicity, and collaboration. Additional chapters examine learning approaches, the dynamics and functions of online relationships, and the role of computer communication technologies. Finally, the book presents a model for understanding distance students' experiences with computer conferencing and discusses how this can improve course design, facilitation and administration. The model it presents of how students engage in online distance study should be valuable for educators, administrators and instructional designers who wish to implement this type of instructional technology.

There is more to science than observation, experiment and mathematical formulas: There is also an implicit and vitally important view of the world. This book is the fruit of over three decades of research by Ervin Laszlo, foremost systems scientist and integrative thinkier; it is a clear and comprehensive statement of what the new sciences tell us about living nature, the universe, and ourselves.Understanding the meaning behind the complex formulas of scientists is more important today than ever before: The holistic and integrative revolution at the end of the century is as rapid and profound as the Einsteinian and quantum revolution was at its beginning. Physicists, cosmologists, biologists, ecologists, and cognitive scientists, together with chaos theorists and cyberneticians, are discovering consistency in nature; the basic and universal laws of evolution and self-organization. Their students project a view of the world that is not mechanistic and atomistic: It is organic and holistic--a view of dynamic wholes, self-creative systems. Grasping the contours of this view is to come to understand the world as it is now discovered by leading-edge scientists. This book is part of the essential literacy of our age.
