The story opens with the death of Mrs. Dombey, who has left her husband the proud possessor of a baby son and heir. He neglects his daughter Florence and loves Paul, in whom all his ambitions and worldly hopes are centred; but the boy dies. Mr. Dombey marries a beautiful woman, who is as cold and proud as he, and who has sold herself to him to escape from a designing mother. She grows fond of Florence, and this friendship is so displeasing to Mr. Dombey that he tries to humble her by remonstrating through Mr. Carker, his business manager and friend. This crafty villain, realizing his power, goads her beyond endurance, and she demands a separation from Mr. Dombey, but is refused. After an angry interview, she determines upon a bold stroke and disgraces her husband by pretending to elope with Carker to France, where she meets him once, shames and defies him and escapes. Mr. Dombey, after spurning Florence, whom he considers the cause of his trouble, follows Carker in hot haste. They encounter each other without warning at a railway station, and as Carker is crossing the tracks he falls and is instantly killed by an express train. Florence seeks refuge with an old sea-captain whom her little brother, Paul, has been fond of, marries Walter Gay, the friend of her childhood, and they go to sea. After the failure of Dombey and Son, when Mr. Dombey''s pride is humbled and he is left desolate, Florence returns and takes care of him. The characters in the book not immediately concerned in the plot, but famous for their peculiar qualities, are Captain Cuttle, Florence''s kind protector, who has a nautical manner of expression ; Sol Gills, Walter''s uncle; Mr.

The volumes cover the beginning of Christianity until before the promulgation of the Nicene Creed at the First Council of Nicaea.Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335 - c. 395) (also known as Gregory Nyssen) was bishop of Nyssa from 372 to 376, and from 378 until his death. Gregory, his brother Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus are collectively known as the Cappadocian FathersGregory lacked the administrative ability of his brother Basil, or the contemporary influence of Gregory of Nazianzus, but was an erudite theologian who made significant contributions to the doctrine of the Trinity and the Nicene creed. Gregory''s philosophical writings were influenced by Origen, and he is generally considered to have believed in universal salvation. Since the mid-twentieth century, there has been a significant increase in interest in Gregory''s works from the academic community, which has resulted in challenges to many traditional interpretations of his theology.

A Review of their Origin and Antiquity ; with a General History of Freemasonry, and its Relation to the Theosophic, Scientific, and Philosophic Mysteries. The object of the work is to give a broad, but condensed view, of the various traces that are to be found amongst the ancients, in their religion, in their art, and in their buildings, civil, sacred and military, of a Speculative System such as is now embodied in Freemasonry. The work is necessarily a compilation of suitable information to be found in ancient and modern writers upon history, mystery, mysticism, and Freemasonry; but it also embraces the most recent views on these subjects which have been evolved by close and critical examination. There will be thirteen chapters, divided into three parts, with an appendix of a series of constitutions. Part I, The Arcane Schools. Part II, Operative and Speculative Freemasonry. Part III, the Speculative Revival. Part IV, Ancient Manuscripts.

Before textbooks reduced American history to dates and names, Jacob Abbott told it as a living story. Published in the pivotal years before the Civil War, Abbott's monumental eight-volume series captured a nation still discovering itself raw, idealistic, and teetering on the edge of transformation. With the narrative gifts that made him one of the nineteenth century's most beloved authors, Abbott wove the grand sweep of American history into compelling human drama: explorers braving unknown seas, colonists carving civilization from wilderness, revolutionaries defying an empire, and founders building a republic on untested principles. From the first European landfalls to the expanding frontiers of the 1850s, Abbott guides readers through the critical moments that forged America Jamestown's desperate winters, the thunder of Bunker Hill, Washington's crossing of the Delaware, the Louisiana Purchase's staggering gamble, and the tensions that would soon tear the nation apart. But he never loses sight of the individuals: the visionaries and opportunists, the heroes and scoundrels, the ordinary people whose choices echoed through generations. Written with clarity, moral purpose, and an eye for the telling detail, these volumes offer something rare: a window into how Americans understood their own story at a crucial turning point. This complete edition preserves Abbott's original vision an epic tale of discovery, struggle, triumph, and the unfinished work of building a nation. Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand not just what happened in early America, but how Americans once saw themselves. This is volume four out of eight presenting the evolution of the Northern colonies.

First published in the 1850s, James Craigie Robertson's History of the Christian Church stands as one of the nineteenth century's most comprehensive and enduring chronicles of Christianity from its apostolic origins through the Reformation. Written by a Canon of Canterbury Cathedral with unparalleled access to ecclesiastical sources and deep scholarly rigor, this eight-volume masterwork traces the development of Christian doctrine, practice, and institutional life across fifteen centuries of tumultuous history. Robertson's narrative encompasses the trials of the early martyrs, the theological controversies that shaped orthodoxy, the rise and schisms of papal power, the flowering of medieval monasticism, and the revolutionary upheavals of the Reformation era. What distinguishes this work is Robertson's rare combination of meticulous historical accuracy, theological sophistication, and narrative clarity. Writing from an Anglican perspective but with remarkable fairness to competing traditions, he illuminates the complex interplay of faith, politics, and culture that forged Western Christiandom. This new edition makes Robertson's magisterial achievement accessible to contemporary readers, students, and scholars. While modern historiography has expanded our understanding in numerous ways, Robertson's work remains invaluable for its comprehensive scope, its vivid portraits of pivotal figures and movements, and its insight into how Victorian scholarship grappled with the Christian past. For anyone seeking to understand the historical foundations of contemporary Christianity, Robertson's History provides an indispensable foundation a testament to an era when church history was written with both scholarly precision and profound religious conviction.
