In the Spring of 1974, 2nd Lt. Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese army made world headlines when he emerged from the Philippine jungle after a thirty-year ordeal. Hunted in turn by American troops, the Philippine army and police, hostile islanders, and eventually successive Japanese search parties, Onoda had skillfully outmaneuvered all his pursuers, convinced that World War II was still being fought and waiting for the day when his fellow soldiers would return victorious. This first-person account of those years of evading capture and trying to stay alive is filled with drama, tension, and excitement.Readers learn about Onoda's early life, his training as an intelligence officer, and his final assignment to the Philippine island of Lubang. When American forces take over the island, he retreats into the mountains and life becomes a constant battle against the elements as well as the enemy. The description of his selfless dedication to a cause allows us a rare glimpse of the invincible spirit of the human being, and his ingenuity in adapting to primitive surroundings is a commentary on man's resourcefulness. Even after the Japanese forces surrender or are killed, courage and conviction allow him and his few comrades to continue until he alone returns to civilization. A soldier who fought and survived the war's longest, loneliest battle, Onoda became a hero to his people and his account of events, first published in Japan in 1974 and in English in 1975, has enjoyed an approving audience ever since. Currently no other English edition is in print.

The revised edition of this indispensable work still covers battle tactics at sea from the age of fighting sail to the present, with emphasis on trends constants, and variables. Fleet Tactics and Naval Operations continues to emphasize combat data, including how hitting and damage rates and maneuvering have been conducted to achieve an advantage over the centuries. The third edition highlights the current swift advances in unmanned vehicles, artificial intelligence, cyber warfare in peace and war, and other effects of information warfare, and how they are changing the ways battles at sea will be fought and won.

The latest edition of Red Star over the Pacific explores how China's growing sea power-shaped by both Western and Chinese strategic thought-threatens U.S. maritime dominance in Asia and demands urgent adaptation by American sea services. In this third edition of Red Star over the Pacific, authors Toshi Yoshihara and James R. Holmes assess how the rise of Chinese sea power challenges American primacy in maritime Asia. Drawing on Alfred Thayer Mahan's sea-power theories, now popular with Chinese practitioners and thinkers, along with Chinese theorists such as Sun Tzu and Mao Zedong, they consider how strategic thought about the sea shapes Beijing's deliberations and examine how the Chinese navy has translated strategic ideas into operational concepts, tactics, and capabilities. It pays great attention to the missile threat while acknowledging the disruptive potential of emerging technologies like drones, AI, and orbital capabilities. The authors conclude that an age of strategic competition is upon Asia and that America must adapt quickly to prevail. The third edition updates the narrative, adds substantial new material, and shows just how much the world has changed around the American sea services in a such a short time.

In this new edition, Bernard Cole revises his acclaimed study of China s navy, one that continues to grow while the U.S. Navy shrinks. According to the author, Beijing is now giving increased attention to guarding its vital sea lanes because of the nation s growing dependence on maritime trade, especially energy supplies. He provides a thorough description of China s naval establishment, including its personnel system, followed by a detailed view of its ships, submarines, and aircraft, all marked by technical sophistication and capability as China reaches the top rank of the world s maritime powers. His evaluation is based on extensive interviews with Chinese and other naval experts, in-depth perusal of original documents, and visits to Chinese warships, training facilities, and shore establishments.

Cyber Warfare and Navies, an edited collection, takes a penetrating look into the threats that cyber warfare poses to operations in the maritime environment and the means of defending against cyberattack. As with all elements of the digital age, navies and commercial maritime operations around the world have become increasingly vulnerable to cyber conflict. Navies are obvious targets of hostile national and nonstate cyber actions. Almost every aspect of commercial maritime activities has become digitized and interconnected and thus vulnerable to cyber intrusions, sabotage, viruses, and destruction. In an era when 85 percent of global trade and 70 percent of all liquid fuels travel by sea, cyber effects on ships, port-handling equipment, shipping companies, maritime suppliers, and other maritime industries can cripple manufacturing industries and retail businesses on a global basis. Neither navies nor commercial shipping can “sail away” from cyber threats. Initially, naval leaders had difficulty accepting and preparing for cyber warfare, which is largely viewed as a problem on land and from which ships were perceived as disconnected. As a consequence, effectively integrating cyber operations into its naval warfighting planning has proven challenging not only for the U.S. Navy, but for allied and adversary navies as well. The U.S. Navy created Fleet Cyber Command (FCC), with the U.S. Navy’s Tenth Fleet as its cyber operational arm and the Navy’s component contributing to U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM). However, thus far those efforts appear not to have served the Navy or USCYBERCOM as well as anticipated. Cyber Warfare and Navies outlines the various threats that cyber warfare poses to naval and commercial maritime operations as well as the abilities of modern navies to defend against those threats. It explains how navies are organized and equipped for cyber operations and the concepts and doctrine adopted by those navies—and provides recommendations on how to improve maritime cyber operations. The book covers not just the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S Coast Guard, but also the navies of allies, opponents (China, Russia), and others. The book also explores the relationship between the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and USCYBERCOM.

Airpower over the Rhine is a critical new perspective on the air battle between the French Air Force (FAF) and the Luftwaffe in the skies over France during May and June 1940. Why were the French overpowered in the air? What factors led to their defeat? Author James F. Slaughter III examines how each country’s leadership created the circumstances that enabled the Luftwaffe’s victory over the FAF and Germany’s ultimate defeat of France.   Conventional wisdom—especially in the English-speaking world—purports that the FAF was a nonentity whose loss was all but guaranteed. But the FAF did, in fact, show up to fight. With virtually every disadvantage and under impossible conditions, FAF pilots nevertheless managed to land significant blows against the Luftwaffe—far more than they are given credit for today. Slaughter traces this misconception to a largely collaborationist cover-up beginning with the Rion Trials in Vichy France that was then perpetuated by Cold War politics and popular mythology.   Rather than absence or incompetence, the FAF lost due to a series of complex internal conflicts within French leadership, both political and military, that set them up to fail. This work compares and examines six fundamental areas that affected the development of the FAF and the Luftwaffe: aircraft and equipment, the aircraft industries, intelligence, the experiences of the Spanish Civil War, doctrine and training, and politics and air power. It also offers new details about and insights into Pierre Cot, a controversial French politician largely unknown outside France. Airpower over the Rhine explains Cot’s internal and external impact on the development of the French Air Force and details what is known about his apparent efforts to spy for the Soviet Union. Thoroughly researched and compellingly written, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in World War II.

Written by veteran aerospace journalist Bob Ward, who spent years investigating his subject, the father of modern rocketry, this biography presents a revealing but even-handed portrait of the one-time Nazi Party member who brought the United States into the Space Age. As he chronicles Werner von Braun's life, Ward explodes many myths and misconceptions about the controversial genius who was a hero to some, a villain to others. From the young German aristocrat’s leadership role in the development of the world’s first ballistic missile—the infamous V-2 rocket used against the Allies during the invasion of Europe in World War II—to his successes in the United States after the war– helping to launch the first U.S. satellite that hurled Americans into space and the Saturn V super-booster that powered them to the moon, a picture of von Braun emerges as a brilliant scientist with limitless curiosity and a drive to achieve his goals at almost any price. Yet the author’s lengthy research reveals that the apolitical von Braun accepted nominal Party membership and an essentially honorary SS commission only under heavy pressure, and that his connections to the notorious V-2 slave labour factory were largely peripheral.Along the way readers are introduced to the human side of this charismatic visionary who brought the United States into the Space Age. Including insights and recollections from a number of von Braun’s celebrity friends—Walter Cronkite, Hugh Downs, and William Pickering among them—this is a book certain to appeal to both von Braun’s admirers and detractors.

`A must-have for any serious scholar of the Pacific War’–Air & Space`An illuminating roadmap following the rise of Japanese naval aviation from its inception in 1909 to its devastating capability on the eve of the Pacific war’–Sea Power`Undoubtedly one of the most important books concerning World War II to appear in the last decade’–The HookThis acclaimed sequel to the Peattie/Evans prize-winning work, Kaigun, illuminates the rise of Japanese naval aviation from its genesis in 1909 to its thunderbolt capability on the eve of the Pacific War. In the process of explaining the navy's essential strengths and weaknesses, the book provides the most detailed account available in English of Japan's naval air campaign over China from 1937 to 1941. A final chapter analyzes the utter destruction of Japanese naval air power by 1944.Peattie traces the development of the Imperial Navy's land-based air power as well as the evolution of its carrier forces. He also treats the salient aspects of Japan's naval air service: training, personnel, tactics, doctrine, technology, and industrial base. In doing so, Peattie combines data found in previous handbooks with important new information derived from Japanese-language sources. Includes extensive appendices, detailed drawings and data on Japanese carriers and naval aircraft, and information on Japanese naval air bases and land-based air groups as of 7 December 1941.About the AuthorMark R. Peattie is the author, co-author, and co-editor of many books, including the award-winning Kaigun: Strategy, Tactics, and Technology in the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1887–1941, coauthored with the late David Evans.

On December 7, 1941, as the great battleships Arizona, Oklahoma, and Utah lay paralysed and burning in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a crack team of U.S. Navy salvage divers headed by Edward C. Raymer were hurriedly flown to Oahu from the mainland. The divers had been given a Herculean task; to rescue the sailors and Marines trapped below, and resurrect the pride of the Pacific fleet. Now for the first time, the chief diver of the Pearl Harbor salvage operations, Cmdr. Edward C. Raymer, USN (Ret.), tells the whole story, in the only book available that describes the raising and salvage operations of sunken battleships following the December 7th attack.Once Raymer and his crew of divers entered the interiors of the sunken shipwrecks, attempting untested and potentially deadly diving techniques, they experienced a world of total blackness, unable to see even the faceplates of their helmets. By memorising the ships’blueprints and using their sense of touch, the divers groped their way hundreds of feet inside the sunken vessels to make repairs and salvage vital war material. The divers learned how to cope with such unseen dangers as falling objects, sharks, the eerie presence of floating human bodies, and the constant threat of Japanese attacks from above.Though many of these divers were killed or seriously injured during the wartime salvage operations, on the whole they had great success performing what seemed to be impossible jobs. Among their credits, Raymer’s crew raised the sunken battleships West Virginia, Nevada, and California.

A narrative of brief compass yet immense force, Yoshida Mitsuru's work makes a singular contribution to the literature of the Pacific War. Long a favourite in Japan, it was not fully translated into English until 1985 when the hardcover edition was first published in the United States to rave reviews. In April 1945 the fabled battleship Yamato was the centrepiece of a last desperate sortie by the Japanese Navy. A young ensign on the bridge during the climactic battle against American airplanes, Yoshida writes in prose that is at once terse and evocative, spare and eloquent, raising his experience on the doomed ship to the level of existential tragedy.Translator Richard Minear gives us a Requiem faithful to the original, its language vigorous and idiomatic. His informative introduction describes the work's historic and political context and Yoshida's difficulties with occupation censors. Minear comments on matters of form and style and quotes extensively from Yoshida's postwar essays, which trace the author's avid and continual search for the meaning of peace beyond "the crucible of nothingness we call battle."Like other great war stories, the book transcends the particulars of disaster and the divisiveness of war. In the words of the translator, Yoshida's "ultimate concern is less bombs and bullets than human nature, less death than life." His remarkable insights will stir the memories of others who served and help those who did not reach a new level of understanding.

This collection of essays presents a clear, authoritative study of airpower, combining historical narrative, thematic analysis, and expert perspective to show how military operations and national security have been shaped by airpower over the past 120 years. American Airpower offers a clear, balanced examination of how airpower has been developed, applied, and what it can—and cannot—achieve in war. Edited by Sterling Michael Pavelec, this collection brings together leading scholars and practitioners to trace the evolution of airpower from its early technological and intellectual foundations to its role in contemporary and emerging domains. Organized as a collection of thematic essays, the book integrates theory with practice. It traces how airpower concepts emerged alongside new technologies, were tested in major conflicts, and how they adapted—sometimes imperfectly—to political constraints, joint warfare, and irregular conflict. Contributors examine key missions such as strategic bombing, air mobility, naval aviation, intelligence and reconnaissance, and precision strike, while also addressing the growing intersections of airpower with space and cyber operations. Rather than advancing a single doctrinal argument, the volume highlights enduring debates: Can airpower alone achieve decisive political outcomes? What are its limits when separated from ground and maritime forces? How do technological advances shape expectations—and misperceptions—about what airpower can deliver? Case studies from World War II through post–Cold War operations illustrate both notable successes and persistent shortcomings.American Airpower highlights critical thinking over advocacy. It challenges readers to understand airpower not as a universal solution, but as a powerful tool whose effectiveness depends on context, strategy, and sound judgment. For students, officers, policymakers, and scholars seeking a clear foundation in airpower history and theory, this book offers a disciplined guide to understanding what airpower has achieved, what it has failed to do, and why those distinctions matter.

In Destroyers at War Adm. James L. Holloway III, the twentieth Chief of Naval Operations, recalls his early life and service on destroyers during the final campaigns of the Pacific War in World War II. As the assistant gunnery officer in USS Ringgold (DD 500) and the gun boss on USS Bennion (DD 665), he took part in shore bombardment and anti-air radar picket missions during the assaults on Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu, and Leyte. He provides detailed explanations of how gunnery systems worked on small combatants as well as gripping accounts of combat events, including the climactic battle of Surigao Strait—the last battleship-vs-battleship clash in history—where a Bennion torpedo scored a fatal blow against the Japanese battleship Yamashiro. This book also explores the relationship between Holloway and his father, James L. Holloway Jr.—the only father-son combination to serve on active duty as four-star admirals—and highlights the senior Holloway’s career as his son worked his way through the ranks. Holloway will be one of the last members of the Greatest Generation to publish a firsthand account of World War II.

Japanese Destroyer Captain is a highly regarded war memoir that was a best seller in both Japan and the United States during the 1960s. The work has long been treasured by World War II buffs and professional historians for its insights into the Japanese side of the surface war in the Pacific. The book has been credited with correcting errors in U.S. accounts of various battles and with revealing details of high-level Imperial Japanese Navy strategy meetings. The author, Captain Tameichi Hara, was a survivor of more than one hundred sorties against the Allies and was known throughout Japan as the“Unsinkable Captain”. Called the workhorses of the navy, Japanese destroyers shouldered the heaviest burden of the surface war and took part in scores of intense sea battles, many of which Captain Hara describes in his memoir. In the early days of the war, victories were common, but by 1943, the lack of proper maintenance of the destroyers and sufficient supplies, along with Allied development of scientific equipment and superior aircraft, took its toll. On April 7, 1945, during the Japanese navy’s last sortie, Captain Hara managed to survive the sinking of his own ship only to witness the demise of the famed Japanese battleship Yamato off Okinawa. A hero to his countrymen, Captain Hara exemplified the best in Japanese surface commanders: highly skilled, hard driving and aggressive. Moreover, he maintained a code of honour worthy of his samurai grandfather, and, as readers of this book have come to appreciate, he was as free with praise for American courage and resourcefulness as he was critical of himself and his senior commanders.

Greyhounds of the Pacific is a comprehensive historical overview of American destroyer operations in the Pacific during World War II. While destroyers initially served in convoy protection roles in the Atlantic, their function in the Pacific shifted as they became independent forces that played a vital part in the war’s outcome. This book examines their transformation from prewar support ships to key players in the Pacific theater, highlighting their adaptability and contributions.Throughout the early years of World War II, U.S. Navy destroyers played a central role in the Battle of the Atlantic. Assigned to convoy escort, antisubmarine patrols, and fleet screening, they operated across wide ocean areas in prolonged contests against German U-boats. As naval operations expanded into the Pacific, destroyers were reassigned to a theater defined by carrier warfare, amphibious landings, and sustained air attacks. There, success depended on different tactical priorities, including anti-aircraft defense, surface action in confined waters, and close coordination with larger fleet formations. Greyhounds of the Pacific traces the wartime service of American destroyers from the opening months of the conflict through the final campaigns of 1945. The narrative begins with the scattered and often improvised actions of U.S. destroyer forces in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor and follows their expanding role in early battles in the Netherlands East Indies, the Coral Sea, and around Guadalcanal. As the war progressed, Fletcher-class ships were increasingly called upon to screen carriers and battleships, conduct shore bombardments, escort amphibious forces, and fight enemy surface units in confined waters, often at night and at close range. From operations in the Solomons, the Central Pacific drive, and the Philippine campaign, including actions off Leyte and Samar, author Andrew Faltum explores the role of the destroyer in the evolution of surface naval warfare.  He also examines the growing threat posed by Japanese submarines and aircraft, culminating in the kamikaze campaign and the demanding radar picket duties off Okinawa. Across the Pacific, the Fletcher-class adapted to new tactical demands through changes in weapons, radar, command-and-control practices, and employment. In addition to combat operations, Greyhounds of the Pacific addresses the technical and organizational aspects of destroyer warfare, including antisubmarine tactics, fighter direction, and the integration of destroyers into larger task forces. Photographs, maps, and technical data supplement the operational narrative, providing context for how these ships were built, modified, and employed. The result is a detailed account of Fletcher-class destroyer operations in the Pacific War, illustrating how these ships and their crews met a wide range of missions across a complex and evolving maritime campaign.

This first biography of Adm. Raymond A. Spruance in over fifty years offers a compelling portrait of the quiet strategist behind key U.S. victories in the Pacific War. Drawing on rich archival material, it highlights Spruance’s sharp intellect, decisive leadership, and lasting influence on naval warfare from World War II to the Cold War.Wielding the Trident is the first biography of Adm. Raymond A. Spruance in more than fifty years, offering a fresh look at one of the most brilliant naval commanders of the Pacific War. Drawing on extensive archival research, original sources, and recent scholarship, author Andrew K. Blackley brings the admiral's extraordinary career to vivid life. The trident, central to the U.S. Naval Academy’s motto, Ex Scientia Tridens (From Knowledge, Seapower), symbolizes Spruance’s unparalleled intelligence and command of naval power.Admiral Spruance was a consummate thinker and strategist, wielding the trident of naval airpower, warships, and amphibious forces with unmatched skill. Known as the “electric brain” for his sharp intellect, Spruance was hailed as the victor of the Battle of Midway and led the Fifth Fleet to decisive victories in the Marshall Islands, Marianas, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa—campaigns that paved the way for Japan’s defeat. His philosophy of warfighting— “violent, overwhelming force, swiftly applied”—ensured that the Japanese never vanquished him.Spruance’s approach to command was methodical and calculated. While others saw gambling as a necessary trait for a commander, he took risks only when the odds were heavily in his favor, stacking them through careful planning and analysis. Despite his monumental achievements, the admiral shunned fame, finding satisfaction in knowing he had done his best to secure victory. This sense of humility has left his legacy overshadowed by contemporaries like Adm. Chester W. Nimitz and Adm. William F. Halsey Jr. In this biography, Andrew Blackley shifts the spotlight back to Spruance, showcasing his decisive impact on the Pacific War.Blackley provides more than a World War II narrative centered on an important naval leader and his key campaigns. He offers insight into Spruance’s life before the war as he climbed the “fleet ladder” and served multiple tours at the Naval War College. While there, Spruance focused his keen analytic mind on the problems of naval strategy for a war against Japan in the Pacific. Following the war, Spruance transitioned to president of the Naval War College, where he initiated studies that gleaned insights from World War II and established conceptual thinking about a war at sea against an emerging competitor—the Soviet Union.

Shortly before embarking on her attempt to circumnavigate the globe, Amelia Earhart confided to a friend, “I have a feeling there is just about one more good flight left in my system and I hope this trip around the world is it.”This book is the product of The Earhart Project, a thirty-four-year investigation of the Earhart tragedy by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. TIGHAR investigators had no agenda. They were not out to advocate, excuse, honor, or impugn. They saw the Earhart disappearance as an aviation accident and reasoned the answer to its cause and outcome should be discoverable if they could find, assemble, and analyze the relevant data. To understand why she died it was necessary to strip away the myths and sentimentality that have grown up over the years and examine the hard truths behind how Earhart's trip around the world came about and why it went so terribly wrong. The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard were major players in the 1937 flight, disappearance, and search for Amelia Earhart, and in the aftermath. The story of the pressures and frustrations the services faced and the mistakes they made contain valuable lessons for today's commanders. Gillespie's first book, Finding Amelia – The True Story of the Earhart Disappearance (Naval Institute Press, 2006) chronicled what was known at that time. This new book updates the story with important new information from historical documents discovered since then and also provides extensive prequel and sequel narratives that complete the saga and give new perspective to the life and death of an American icon.

The latest edition of Red Star over the Pacific explores how China’s growing sea power—shaped by both Western and Chinese strategic thought—threatens U.S. maritime dominance in Asia and demands urgent adaptation by American sea services. In this third edition of Red Star over the Pacific, authors Toshi Yoshihara and James R. Holmes assess how the rise of Chinese sea power challenges American primacy in maritime Asia. Drawing on Alfred Thayer Mahan’s sea-power theories, now popular with Chinese practitioners and thinkers, along with Chinese theorists such as Sun Tzu and Mao Zedong, they consider how strategic thought about the sea shapes Beijing’s deliberations and examine how the Chinese navy has translated strategic ideas into operational concepts, tactics, and capabilities.

War Transformed: The Future of Twenty-First-Century Great Power Competition and Conflict provides insights for those involved in the design of military strategy, and the forces that must execute that strategy. Emphasizing the impacts of technology, new era strategic competition, demography, and climate change, Mick Ryan uses historical as well as contemporary anecdotes throughout the book to highlight key challenges faced by nations in a new era of great power rivalry. Just as previous industrial revolutions have advanced societies, the nascent fourth industrial revolution will have a similar impact on how humans fight, compete, and build military power in the twenty-first century. After reviewing the principle catalysts of change in the security environment, War Transformed seeks to provide a preview of the shape of war and competition in the twenty-first century. Ryan examines both the shifting character of war and its enduring nature. In doing so, he proposes important trends in warfare that will shape all aspects of human competition and conflict in the coming decades. The remainder of the book analyzes how military institutions must prepare for future competition and conflict. Competing and engaging in combat in this new era involves new and evolved strategies and warfighting concepts, as well as adapting our current military organizations. It will also demand building an intellectual edge in military personnel through evolved concepts of training, education, and development. As the competitive environment and potential battlefields continue to change, conceptions of combat, competition and conflict must also evolve. Mick Ryan makes the case for transforming how Western military institutions view war in this century.

Honorable Survivor weaves John S. Service's extraordinary story into the fabric of a watershed moment in our history when World War II was ending, the Cold War was dawning, and the McCarthy era witch-hunters were stirring. The book reveals how people, policy, and politics mix to create the circumstances of our lives--and the experiences of one man who came to be at the center of a series of extraordinary events involving the fate of nations. A true story of intrigue, adventure, persecution, and redemption- and the love of a loyal American wife and a Chinese lover, this biography chronicles the experiences of John S. Service. Emmy award-winning journalist Lynne Joiner tells the tale of Service, an idealistic U.S. Foreign Service officer in wartime China who had the misfortune of often being right although U.S. policymakers refused to heed his prescient reporting. He predicted Mao Tse-tung's successful revolution long before anyone else even knew the Chinese Communists were a potent force, and, subsequently, he became Sen. Joseph McCarthy's first victim. The author describes how Service was fired for ""doubtful"" loyalty--but won his job back in the U.S. Supreme Court, only to have his career ""neutralized"" by the FBI, anti-Communist politicians, the China lobby, and Chiang Kai-shek's secret police. Born and raised in China by YMCA missionaries, Service became America's key liaison with the Communist Chinese when Gen. Joseph Stilwell wanted their help against the Japanese. Later, he became a target of revenge for Nationalist Chinese, a convenient scapegoat for American politicians eager to advance their careers, and a ""person of interest"" to J. Edgar Hoover for more than a quarter century. Joiner was given special access to Service's private papers and photographs with Mao and Chou En-lai, among others, and gained access to FBI, CIA, and State Department security records as well as confidential transcripts of congressional hearings and federal loyalty review boards. Although newly released Soviet and U.S. documents demonstrate that some of his wartime associates were in fact identified as Communist spies or fellow travelers, Joiner shows that Service was an honorable survivor who was innocent of McCarthy's charges.

The Craft of Wargaming is designed to support supervisors, planners, and analysts who use wargames to support their organizations' missions. The authors focus on providing analysts and planners with a clear methodology that allows them to initiate, design, develop, conduct, and analyze wargames. Built around the analytic wargaming construct, organizations or individuals can easily adapt this methodology to construct educational and experiential wargames. The book breaks the wargame creation process into five distinct phases: Initiate, Design, Develop, Conduct, and Analyze. For each phase, the authors identify key tasks a wargaming team must address to have a reasonable chance at designing, developing, conducting, and analyzing a successful wargame. While these five stages are critical to the process of constructing any wargame, it should be understood that the craft of wargaming is learned through active participation, not by reading or watching. This craft must be practiced as part of the learning process, and the included practical exercises provide an opportunity to experience the construction of an analytical wargame. The authors also discuss critical supervisory tasks that are essential to manage the wargaming team's efforts. While the creators are focused on the design and development of the game itself, supervisors must set conditions for the wargame to be a success (best practices) and beware of the pitfalls that may set the wargame up to fail (worst practices). The book demonstrates using the analytical wargaming framework to create relevant and useful planning wargames. It also reinforces using the analytical wargaming framework for seminar wargames that, without rigor, are useless. The book demonstrates the benefits of using the analytical wargaming process to design educational and experiential games.

Their middle son, Jamie, is a merchant marine officer. Their daughter, Lucy, has a high-tech job with a defense contractor. But all plans are scrapped when war drums start beating. The Pacific Fleet commander sends Cole stateside to challenge a hardened political bureaucracy into getting serious about the threat to peace in the Pacific. Proven right when the missiles start flying, Cole is ordered to do the impossible: destroy the Chinese fleet and retake Taiwan—before it’s too late. He’ll risk everything in a final fleet amphibious action—his career, his Navy, and his family. With the pacing of a master storyteller and a flair for riveting action sequences, M. P. Woodward captivates readers while raising important questions about the U.S. Navy’s ability to remain the world’s guarantor of a free sea in the twenty-first century. From the halls of Washington to the mountains of Taiwan to the waters of the South Pacific, Red Tide is the story of America at war, as depicted through the eyes of one courageous naval family.

Uncommon Valor is a look into the formation and operation of an advanced Special Forces recon company during the Vietnam War. Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most covert U.S. military unit in its time and contained only volunteers from such elite units as the Army's Green Berets, Navy SEALs, and Air Force Air Commandos. SOG warriors operated in small teams, going behind enemy lines in Laos and Cambodia and along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, tasked with performing special reconnaissance, sabotaging North Vietnamese Army ammunition, attempting to rescue downed U.S. pilots, and other black ops missions. During that time, Forward Operating Base-2's (FOB-2's) recon company became the most highly decorated unit of the Vietnam War, with five of its men earning the Medal of Honor and eight earning the Distinguished Service Cross-America's second highest military award for valor. Purple Hearts were earned by SOG veterans at a pace unparalleled in American wars of the twentieth century, with casualties at times exceeding 100 percent. One, Bob Howard, was wounded on fourteen different occasions, received eight Purple Hearts, was written up after three different missions for the Medal of Honor, and emerged from Vietnam as the most highly decorated soldier since World War II's Audie Murphy.

Admiral Raoul Castex is France's most important modern naval strategist. Military historian Eugenia Kiesling offers the essence of Castex's original five volume study, Théories Stratégiques, in a useful one-volume abridgment and a very readable translation. It emphasizes the admiral's method of strategic analysis while omitting most of the historical narrative. Included are chapters defining strategy and relating it to policy and geography, analyzing the role of maritime forces and the significance of command at sea, prescribing a theory of conduct of operations, and introducing Castex's favorite themes: strategic manoeuvre, stratégie générale, and the theory of "perturbation."Two narrative chapters on German operations in the North Sea from 1914 to 1916 remain as examples of the author's historical style. The introduction places Castex's work in four distinct contexts: the international debate among naval theorists on the nature and importance of "command at sea," the controversy within France between advocates of the "historical" and "material" schools of naval strategy, the contemporary concern over coordinated naval strategy for total war, and his contribution to the formulation of French strategy between the world wars. In an era of expanding global responsibilities and shrinking national economies, Castex's balanced view of naval power offers many insights for today's new generation of naval thinkers.

One of the great spectacles of modern naval history is the Imperial Japanese Navy's instrumental role in Japan's rise from an isolationist feudal kingdom to a potent military empire stridently confronting, in 1941, the world's most powerful nation. Years of painstaking research and analysis of previously untapped Japanese-language resources have produced this remarkable study of the navy's dizzying development, tactical triumphs, and humiliating defeat.Unrivalled in its breadth of coverage and attention to detail, this important new history explores the foreign and indigenous influences on the navy's thinking about naval warfare and how to plan for it. Focusing primarily on the much-neglected period between the world wars, two widely esteemed historians persuasively explain how the Japanese failed to prepare properly for the war in the Pacific despite an arguable advantage in capability. Maintaining the highest literary standards and supplemented by a dazzling array of charts, diagrams, drawings, and photographs, this landmark work provides much important information not available in any other English-language source. Consciously avoiding the Eurocentric bias of conventional military scholarship, David Evans and Mark Peattie make a unique contribution to naval historiography that will be prized by serious historians and casual readers alike and that promises to spark debate within the academic community.

Originally setting out to write the very book that he would have wanted to own as a young infantryman, the author penned On Tactics as a remedy for navigating the chaotic and inchoate realm of tactical theory. Challenging centuries-old conventional wisdom regarding the principles of war, tactics, and the roles of strategy, doctrine, experiential learning, and military history, Friedman's work offers a striking synthesis of thinking on tactics as well as strategy.

On Operations: Operational Art and Military Disciplines traces the history of the development of military staffs and ideas on the operational level of war and operational art from the Napoleonic Wars to today, viewing them through the lens of Prussia/Germany, the Soviet Union, and the United States. B. A. Friedman concludes that the operational level of war should be rejected as fundamentally flawed, but that operational art is an accurate description of the activities of the military staff, an organization developed to provide the brainpower necessary to manage the complexity of modern military operations. Rather than simply serve as an intercession between levels, the military staff exists as an enabler and supporting organization to tacticians and strategists alike. On Operations examines the organization of military staffs, which has changed little since Napoleon's time. Historical examinations of the functions staffs provided to commanders, and the disciplines of the staff officers themselves, leads to conclusions about how best to organize staffs in the future. Friedman demonstrates these ideas through case studies of historical campaigns based on the military discipline system developed.

As Clausewitz observed, “In war more than anywhere else, things do not turn out as we expect.” The essence of war is a competitive reciprocal relationship with an adversary. Commanders and institutional leaders must recognize shortfalls and resolve gaps rapidly in the middle of the fog of war. The side that reacts best (and absorbs faster) increases its chances of winning. Mars Adapting examines what makes some military organizations better at this contest than others. It explores the institutional characteristics or attributes at play in learning quickly. Adaptation requires a dynamic process of acquiring knowledge, the utilization of that knowledge to alter a unit's skills, and the sharing of that learning to other units to integrate and institutionalize better operational practice.Mars Adapting explores the internal institutional factors that promote and enable military adaptation. It employs four cases, drawing upon one from each of the U.S. armed services. Each case was an extensive campaign, with several cycles of action/counteraction. In each case the military institution entered the war with an existing mental model of the war they expected to fight. For example, the U.S. Navy prepared for decades to defeat the Japanese Imperial Navy and had developed carried-based aviation. Other capabilities, particularly the Fleet submarine, were applied as a major adaptation. The author establishes a theory called Organizational Learning Capacity that captures the transition of experience and knowledge from individuals into larger and higher levels of each military service through four major steps. The learning/change cycle is influenced, he argues, by four institutional attributes (leadership, organizational culture, learning mechanisms, and dissemination mechanisms). The dynamic interplay of these institutional enablers shaped their ability to perceive and change appropriately.
