For 50 years, educator and sociologist Geoff Whitty resolutely pursued social justice through education, first as a classroom teacher and ultimately as the Director of the Institute of Education in London.

The essays in this volume - written by some of the most influential authors in the sociology of education and critical policy studies - take Whitty?s work as the starting point from which to examine key contemporary issues in education and the challenges to social justice that they present. Set within three themes of knowledge, policy and practice in education, the chapters tackle the issues of defining and accessing ?legitimate? knowledge, the changing nature of education policy under neoliberalism and globalization, and the reshaping of teacher workplaces and professionalism ? as well as attempts to realize more emancipatory practice. Whitty?s scholarship on what constitutes quality and impact in educational research is also explored.

Together, the essays open a window on a life in the sociology of education, the scholarly community of which it was part, and the facets of education policy, practice and research that they continue to reveal and challenge in pursuit of social justice. They celebrate Whitty as one of the foremost sociologists of education of his generation, but also as a friend and colleague. And they highlight the continued relevance of his contribution to those seeking to promote fairer and more inclusive education systems. ** Praise for {::}{::}Knowledge, Policy and Practice in Education and the Struggle for Social Justice**

'This book of essays is a moving and fitting tribute to the life and work of Geoff Whitty. Many of the chapters break new ground in their own right but together they offer an appropriate and original reflection on Whitty's considerable contribution to our understanding of education policy and educational research. The editors have done a superb job in garnering writing of great distinction and of considerable originality, making a very significant addition to the field of education studies and to various sub-sets of that field.' - Ian Menter, Emeritus Professor of Teacher Education, University of Oxford, BERA President 2013-15

'This book could be recommended in social justice studies, particularly in education colleges across higher education. I also recommend this book to be kept in libraries to introduce academics to up-to-date meta-concepts of social justice.'* Journal of Education and Social Justice*

Dwelling on the Future focuses on the design of dwellings and their varied environments, and questions how an architect responds to the challenge of providing humane places in which to live for a growing, multifarious population in an increasingly divided world. Is it possible to imagine and implement a world in which a level of comfort and stability is available for even the poorest members of societies?

The Impact of Migration on Poland offers a new approach for understanding how migration affects sending countries and provides a wide-ranging analysis of how Poland has changed, and continues to change, since EU accession in 2004.

Citizen Science: Innovation in Open Science, Society and Policy identifies and explains the role of citizen science within innovation in science and society, and as a vibrant and productive science-policy interface. The scope of this volume is global, geared towards identifying solutions and lessons to be applied across science, practice and policy

From the myth of Arcadia through to the twenty-first century, ideas about sustainability ? how we imagine better urban environments ? remain persistently relevant, and raise recurring questions. How do cities evolve as complex spaces nurturing both urban creativity and the fortuitous art of discovery, and by which mechanisms do they foster imagination and innovation? While past utopias were conceived in terms of an ideal geometry, contemporary exemplary models of urban design seek technological solutions of optimal organisation. The Venice Variations explores Venice as a prototypical city that may hold unique answers to the ancient narrative of utopia. Venice was not the result of a preconceived ideal but the pragmatic outcome of social and economic networks of communication. Its urban creativity, though, came to represent the quintessential combination of place and institutions of its time.

Through a discussion of Venice and two other works owing their inspiration to this city ? Italo Calvino?s Invisible Cities and Le Corbusier?s Venice Hospital ? Sophia Psarra describes Venice as a system that starts to resemble a highly probabilistic ?algorithm?. The rapidly escalating processes of urban development around our big cities share many of the motivations for survival, shelter and trade that brought Venice into existence. Rather than seeing these places as problems to be solved, we need to understand how urban complexity can evolve, as happened from its unprepossessing origins in the marshes of the Venetian lagoon to the ?model city? enduring a 1000 years. This book frees Venice from stereotypical representations, revealing its generative capacity to inform potential other ?Venices? for the future.

Praise for The Venice Variations

'An imaginative and ambitious account of urban development and the architect?s means of engagement with it. The text is expansive, offering a virtuoso display of different modes of knowing. ... Both a history and a proposed methodology, a concatenation of erudition and imagination. ...What is the relevance of an architectural imagination that does not engage with such social and political concerns. The book certainly suggests why it would be important for it to do so.'Buildings & Cities

'The beautifully designed book fulfils a dreamy mission of aggrandizing the titular city?s history and beauty while recognizing its fragility and potential demise because of climate change and overcrowding from tourists and their marine vehicles ? Psarra deals very carefully with the history of Piazza San Marco and its central position in civic and religious interpretations of the city.'The Architect's Newspaper

'The book shows us the value of doing diachronic history. We see how useful it is to learn about twentieth-century architecture along with Renaissance spaces. Similarly, we see the value in a truly multi-disciplinary history in which Calvino and Le Corbusier are on equal footing. In all of this, we must wonder how history can be more creative and provocative. As Psarra shows, there is a lot we can learn from Venice.'Modern Italy

'A visual treat that is made more accessible and meaningful through the diagrams.'A Daily Dose of Architecture Books'Psarra animates the city as a creature that is based on the dialogue between anonymous collective and branded individual imagination. It reconstitutes the principles and ways of thinking that allowed Venice to act as a source of inspiration? It shows us how the natural city, and its mythological plots that we have in our minds, are being embodied in an open creativity. The book can be purchased in classic print or purchased electronically at no cost.' Smells Like Urban Spirit (SLUS)

The menstrual product industry has played a large role in shaping the last hundred years of menstrual culture, from technological innovation to creative advertising, education in classrooms and as employers of thousands in factories around the world. How much do we know about this sector and how has it changed in later decades? What constitutes ?the industry?, who works in it, and how is it adapting to the current menstrual equity movement?

Cash Flow provides a new academic study of the menstrual corporate landscape that links its twentieth-century origins to the current ?menstrual moment?. Drawing on a range of previously unexplored archival materials and interviews with industry insiders, each chapter examines one key company and brand: Saba in Norway, Essity in Sweden, Tambrands in the Soviet Union, Procter & Gamble in Britain and Europe, Kimberly-Clark in North America, and start-ups Clue and Thinx. By engaging with these corporate collections, the book highlights how the industry has survived as its consumers continually change.

Praise for Cash Flow 'This book is an important addition to the work done on menstrual capitalism and shows how the evolving culture around menstruation is actually ?good for business.?' LSE Review of Books

'This text deeply analyzes the corporate, social, and political dynamics of menstrual technologies through an intersectional feminist lens. Questions about the social construction of menstruation and its capitalization through mass-produced menstrual technologies are incisively raised' Choice

'the establishing field of critical menstrual studies meets business history in this important book.' Scandinavian Economic History Review

?This wonderful book is a compelling and important addition to the fields of critical menstruation studies, labour history and feminist studies. Cash Flow interrogates the intersections of technology, capitalism and colonialism at the heart of the late-twentieth-century menstrual economy in the Global North. Focusing on seven powerful corporate brands and start-ups, Cash Flow explores the menstrual product industry?s capacities for re-invention and appropriation of shifts in menstrual culture to turn a profit, whatever the cost.? Cathy McClive, Florida State University

'Cash Flow provides a succinct, yet in-depth cultural history of the men-strual economy, utilizing sources from the corporations? own archives that have not previously been analyzed, making it a valuable contribution to critical men-struation studies and the wider field of cultural studies. R?stvik?s incisive analysis and use of archival material from the companies discussed in Cash Flow provides unique insight into the menstrual economy, and its wider relationship with the public?s perception of menstruation. Further, linking the history of the menstrual economy to FemTech startups proves that Cash Flow is a timely contribution that demonstrates how the history of menstrual products informs FemTech of the future.' Critical Medical Anthropology presents inspiring work from scholars doing and engaging with ethnographic research in or from Latin America, addressing themes that are central to contemporary Critical Medical Anthropology (CMA). This includes issues of inequality, embodiment of history, indigeneity, non-communicable diseases, gendered violence, migration, substance abuse, reproductive politics and judicialisation, as these relate to health.

The collection of ethnographically informed research, including original theoretical contributions, reconsiders the broader relevance of CMA perspectives for addressing current global healthcare challenges from and of Latin America. It includes work spanning four countries in Latin America (Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala and Peru) as well as the trans-migratory contexts they connect and are defined by. By drawing on diverse social practices, it addresses challenges of central relevance to medical anthropology and global health, including reproduction and maternal health, sex work, rare and chronic diseases, the pharmaceutical industry and questions of agency, political economy, identity, ethnicity, and human rights.

Ancient Knowledge Networks is a book about how knowledge travels, in minds and bodies as well as in writings. It explores the forms knowledge takes and the meanings it accrues, and how these meanings are shaped by the peoples who use it.

Addressing the relationships between political power, family ties, religious commitments and literate scholarship in the ancient Middle East of the first millennium BC, Eleanor Robson focuses on two regions where cuneiform script was the predominant writing medium: Assyria in the north of modern-day Syria and Iraq, and Babylonia to the south of modern-day Baghdad. She investigates how networks of knowledge enabled cuneiform intellectual culture to endure and adapt over the course of five world empires until its eventual demise in the mid-first century BC. In doing so, she also studies Assyriological and historical method, both now and over the past two centuries, asking how the field has shaped and been shaped by the academic concerns and fashions of the day. Above all, Ancient Knowledge Networks is an experiment in writing about ?Mesopotamian science?, as it has often been known, using geographical and social approaches to bring new insights into the intellectual history of the world?s first empires.

Praise for Ancient Knowledge Networks

'In this important new book, Eleanor Robson offers a rich and fascinating sketch of cuneiform intellectual culture in Assyria and Babylonia from the late thirteenth century through the second half of the first millennium BC. ...The book will be of interest not only to specialists in ancient Near Eastern studies but also to ancient historians and archaeologists studying other world areas and eras in which ancient writing systems developed.' American Antiquity 'A thoughtful, well written, modern approach to the study of cuneiform culture. An essential read for those of us studying any aspect of cuneiform writing.' Archaeological Review from Cambridge

'This is an engaging volume that takes an original approach to understanding the agents of knowledge networks and the social, geographical and cultural factors that shaped them.'Antiquity

'The second chapter ...is a useful chapter for students and scholars of the Ancient Near East ... Arguments are based on excellent studies of archives and salient observations about ancient communities elucidated from scanty but revealing evidence. Where the book innovates, however, is in tying all of these scholars and knowledge together.' Journal of Near Eastern Studies

'The book complicates and humanises the categories that have streamlined the study of cuneiform scholarship. In its own words, this is a book about ?how knowledge travels? through the people who carry it, their writings, their responsibilities and their benefactors ? human and divine. It animates the lives of scholars through their movements, their works and the movements of their works, until the end of cuneiform culture in Babylon and Uruk. Ancient Knowledge Networks is a study of the history of knowledge that restores context to text ? an invaluable re-evaluation of the sources to the modern scholars of Assyria and Babylonia.'History Today

'Eleanor Robson?s Ancient Knowledge Networks offers a fascinating portrait of the social and geographical life of cuneiform scholarship, scribal learning, or ?up?arrutu. It examines high cuneiform culture in the terms of the texts' own taxonomies of knowledge, while taking full account of relevant archaeological evidence and employing micro- and macro-geographical analysis. A lucid presentation of new ideas concerning the Assyrian and Babylonian first-millennium intelligentsia and their patrons, Ancient Knowledge Networks is a book for cuneiformists as well as non-specialist readers outside the ancient Middle Eastern fields.'Francesca Rochberg, University of California, Berkeley

Miniaturisation is the creation of small objects that resemble larger ones, usually but not always for purposes different to those of the larger original object. Worlds in Miniature brings together researchers working across various regions, time periods and disciplines to explore the subject of miniaturisation as a material culture technique. It offers original contribution to the field of miniaturisation through its broad geographical scope, interdisciplinary approach, and deep understanding of miniatures and their diverse contexts.

Beginning with an introduction by the editors, which offers one possible guide to studying and comparing miniatures, the following chapters include studies of miniature Neolithic stone circles on Exmoor, Ancient Egyptian miniature assemblages, miniaturisation under colonialism as practiced by the Makah People of Washington State, miniature watercraft from India, miniaturised contemporary tourist art of the Warao people of Venezuela, and dioramas on display in the Science Museum.

Interspersing the chapters are interviews with miniature-makers, including two miniature boat-builders at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and a freelance architectural model-maker. Professor Susanne Küchler concludes the volume with a theoretical study summarising the current state of miniaturisation as a research discipline. The interdisciplinary nature of the volume makes it suitable reading for anthropologists, historians, archaeologists and artists, and for researchers in related fields across the social sciences.
