New Edition: Astronomical Spectroscopy (3rd Edition) Nearly all information about the Universe comes from the study of light as it reaches us. However, understanding the information contained in this light requires both telescopes capable of resolving it into its component colours and a detailed knowledge of the quantum mechanical behaviour of atoms and molecules. This book, which is based on a third-year undergraduate course taught by the author at University College London, presents the basic atomic and molecular physics necessary to understand and interpret astronomical spectra. It explains how and what kind of information can be extracted from these spectra. Contemporary astronomical spectra are used extensively to study the underlying atomic physics and illustrate the results.

Although there are many textbooks that deal with the formal apparatus of quantum mechanics (QM) and its application to standard problems, none take into account the developments in the foundations of the subject which have taken place in the last few decades. There are specialized treatises on various aspects of the foundations of QM, but none that integrate those topics with the standard material. This book aims to remove that unfortunate dichotomy, which has divorced the practical aspects of the subject from the interpretation and broader implications of the theory. In this edition a new chapter on quantum information is added. As the topic is still in a state of rapid development, a comprehensive treatment is not feasible. The emphasis is on the fundamental principles and some key applications, including quantum cryptography, teleportation of states, and quantum computing. The impact of quantum information theory on the foundations of quantum mechanics is discussed. In addition, there are minor revisions to several chapters. The book is intended primarily as a graduate level textbook, but it will also be of interest to physicists and philosophers who study the foundations of QM. Parts of it can be used by senior undergraduates too.

An introductory text book for graduates and advanced undergraduates on group representation theory. It emphasizes group theory's role as the mathematical framework for describing symmetry properties of classical and quantum mechanical systems.Familiarity with basic group concepts and techniques is invaluable in the education of a modern-day physicist. This book emphasizes general features and methods which demonstrate the power of the group-theoretical approach in exposing the systematics of physical systems with associated symmetry.Particular attention is given to pedagogy. In developing the theory, clarity in presenting the main ideas and consequences is given the same priority as comprehensiveness and strict rigor. To preserve the integrity of the mathematics, enough technical information is included in the appendices to make the book almost self-contained.A set of problems and solutions has been published in a separate booklet.

In the post-quantum-mechanics era, few physicists, if any, have matched Julian Schwinger in contributions to and influence on the development of physics. A deep and provocative thinker, Schwinger left his indelible mark on all areas of theoretical physics; an eloquent lecturer and immensely successful mentor, he was gentle, intensely private, and known for being “modest about everything except his physics”. This book is a collection of talks in memory of him by some of his contemporaries and his former students: A Klein, F Dyson, B DeWitt, W Kohn, D Saxon, P C Martin, K Johnson, S Deser, R Finkelstein, Y J Ng, H Feshbach, L Brown, S Glashow, K A Milton, and C N Yang. From it, one can get a glimpse of Julian Schwinger, the physicist, the teacher, and the man. Altogether, this book is a must for all physicists, physics students, and others who are interested in great legends.

This first-of-its-kind monograph provides a comprehensive overview of the field of quantum biology. Operating from first principles, the core quantum mechanical concepts of quantum biology are advanced to provide the theoretical foundation for this emerging field. Essential topics such as open quantum systems theory, biological electron and proton transfer, vibronic interactions, radical pair dynamics, enzyme photochemistry, ultraweak photon emissions, electrodynamic effects on cellular processes, non-covalent interactions, multi-scale modeling of biomolecular systems, and strong quantum correlations in biological catalysts are woven together through a cohesive interdisciplinary narrative. A comprehensive exploration of quantum effects in living systems is presented in a colloquial style, neatly outlining their long-standing importance in the historical development of quantum theory. Physical Principles of Quantum Biology lays the essential groundwork to enable further developments in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and technology. This authoritative treatise brings clarity and insight to the fundamental advances being made in the emerging science of quantum biology.

Hence, those who understand and leverage AI agents today will define the next era of business.

Renowned physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson is famous for his work in quantum mechanics, nuclear weapons policy and bold visions for the future of humanity. In the 1940s, he was responsible for demonstrating the equivalence of the two formulations of quantum electrodynamics — Richard Feynman's diagrammatic path integral formulation and the variational methods developed by Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonoga — showing the mathematical consistency of QED.This invaluable volume comprises the legendary lectures on quantum electrodynamics first given by Dyson at Cornell University in 1951. The late theorist Edwin Thompson Jaynes once remarked, “For a generation of physicists they were the happy medium: clearer and better motivated than Feynman, and getting to the point faster than Schwinger”.This edition has been printed on the 60th anniversary of the Cornell lectures, and includes a foreword by science historian David Kaiser, as well as notes from Dyson's lectures at the Les Houches Summer School of Theoretical Physics in 1954. The Les Houches lectures, described as a supplement to the original Cornell notes, provide a more detailed look at field theory, a careful and rigorous derivation of Fermi's Golden Rule, and a masterful treatment of renormalization and Ward's Identity.Future generations of physicists are bound to read these lectures with pleasure, benefiting from the lucid style that is so characteristic of Dyson's exposition.

This research monograph presents a groundbreaking unification of neural network approximation theory through the lens of Positive Linear Operators (PLOs). For the first time in the literature, neural network operators and activated convolution operators are rigorously analyzed as PLOs — providing a comprehensive, quantitative framework based on inequalities and the modulus of continuity. The author develops a general, elegant, and highly versatile theory that applies uniformly to a wide variety of neural and convolution operators, bridging Pure and Applied Mathematics with modern Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The results open new directions for mathematical understanding of neural network approximation, with applications across computational analysis, engineering, statistics, and economics. This volume is an essential resource for mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers seeking a rigorous analytical foundation for AI and deep learning models.

If there were no Coulomb interaction among electrons, it would be relatively straightforward to solve the many-electron Schrödinger equation. It is, however, precisely this interaction that is at the heart of numerous fascinating phenomena in condensed matter physics such as superconductivity, Kondo physics, magnetism, etc. Due to the large number of electrons in a material being of the order of Avogadro's number, it is at present — and perhaps in the foreseeable future — not feasible or even desirable to solve the Schrödinger equation to obtain the many-electron wavefunction. Fortunately, a large number of important physical properties can be calculated without explicit knowledge of the wavefunction. Two of the most important formalisms for dealing with the many-electron problem which avoid a direct use of the many-electron wavefunction are the Green function and the density functional theory. Within the Kohn-Sham scheme the latter is used to calculate ground-state properties whereas the former for excitation spectra. The book presents the fundamentals of these two theories in detail with essential many-body tools, such as the occupation number representation and Grassmann algebra developed from scratch. Prior knowledge of many-body theory is not a prerequisite so that it is readable for final-year undergraduates and graduate students in physics and chemistry as well as researchers in the field of electronic structure and many-body theory. The book includes in the last chapter an exposition of a density-functional path for determining the Green function, a new formalism recently proposed by the author. The book should be a valuable companion for those embarking in the field of many-electron physics.

The Ultimate Chinese Martial Art — The Science of the Weaving Stance Bagua 64 Forms and the Wellness Applications has three well integrated parts. Part One describes the cultural, historical and scientific background of the mysterious inner style martial art — Bagua Palm — which used to be taught in a small circle of the Royal families in China. Part Two gives a brief and yet detailed instructions on the techniques and step by step exercises of Bagua Palms with illustrations, including the example of the famous Weaving Stance Bagua 64 Forms. Part Three summarizes the wellness applications of the Bagua Palms as an inner style Chinese martial art.The aim of this book is to help all people on this planet to have a better understanding about wellness and the most effective way to achieve it. The book will thus ultimately make its way to the short list of books which truly leave their marks on the progress of human civilization. The less than sophisticated style of writing makes this book an easy and helpful reading for people from all walks of life. This book is not just about Chinese martial art. It is also about the link between Chinese culture and martial art. With practical instructions on the actual exercise, this book will benefit not just practitioners and trainers in Chinese martial art but effectively all people who read it. This book is not only going to be the martial art book of the year, but the martial art book of the 21st century. This is the first martial art book written by martial art practitioners who have thorough understanding of both physics and actual fighting, with a solid background in Chinese culture. All the three authors of the book have over 40 years of extensive experience each in Chinese martial art. In contrast to conventional Chinese martial art scripts, this book is written by three Chinese authors in plain and vivid English, which is both filled with true understanding of the unique part of Chinese culture and tuned to the cognitive habits of the westerners.

At a global scale, love hormones are now redundant in the critical period surrounding birth ... reasons for questions?Between 1970 and 1990, in many parts of the world, the rates of caesareans escalated from roughly 5% to roughly 25%. During this short phase of history, the father's participation became routine. Is there a link between these facts?Health care systems are on the way to collapsing. Should we go on focusing on the preventive and curative treatments of particular diseases or should we give a greater importance to the way our basic adaptive systems, involved in what we commonly call health, reach a high degree of maturity? These examples are sufficient to illustrate the "neo-Socratic attitude" of the author. Our contemporaries are constantly dealing with unprecedented situations. Question marks, therefore, can symbolise the current phase of our history. Throughout this book, radically new situations are analysed, before appropriate questions are phrased. At a time when people commonly debate on the long-term effects of human activities without considering the probable transformations of Homo, one cannot avoid a preliminary question: How to reach an audience made up of female and male open-minded people who are turned towards the future but have not yet realised that the important period surrounding birth has been radically transformed during the past decades? In the age of cultural blindness related to overspecialization, The Future of Homo is also a training tool to think across boundaries.

Following the critically acclaimed An Illustrated History of Electric Lighting (2016), Professor Emeritus Adam Allerhand of Indiana University, USA, is back with yet another masterpiece. Starting from 1300 BC and progressing steadily to the present, this book is the ultimate guide to the history of the science of electricity. It is the result of 15 years of research through a vast and daunting literature which is hard for beginners and experts alike to navigate, bringing together many widely scattered and obscure facts that have hitherto eluded even the most ardent aficionados. There is particular emphasis on practical applications, including electricity for illumination, communication, medicine and industry. For non-specialists with an interest in the subject, fret not, for the text is written with a minimum of technical jargon, and is richly illustrated with over 100 images, many of them created by the author.

This highly unusual book began as a serious inquiry into Schrödinger's question, “What is life?”, and as a celebration of life itself. It takes the reader on a voyage of discovery through many areas of contemporary physics, from non-equilibrium thermodynamics and quantum optics to liquid crystals and fractals, all necessary for illuminating the problem of life. In the process, the reader is treated to a rare and exquisite view of the organism, gaining novel insights not only into the physics, but also into “the poetry and meaning of being alive.”This much-enlarged third edition includes new findings on the central role of biological water in organizing living processes; it also completes the author's novel theory of the organism and its applications in ecology, physiology and brain science.

This exceptional book is concerned with the application of fractals and chaos, as well as other concepts from nonlinear dynamics to biomedical phenomena. Herein we seek to communicate the excitement being experienced by scientists upon making application of these concepts within the life sciences. Mathematical concepts are introduced using biomedical data sets and the phenomena being explained take precedence over the mathematics. In this new edition what has withstood the test of time has been updated and modernized; speculations that were not borne out have been expunged and the breakthroughs that have occurred in the intervening years are emphasized. The book provides a comprehensive overview of a nascent theory of medicine, including a new chapter on the theory of complex networks as they pertain to medicine.

"The authors have done an exceptional job. It’s probably more accurate to describe this text as an introduction to both non-relativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics … This book was a lot of fun to read and digest. I definitely recommend it for instructors, but also for students who have already been exposed to quantum mechanics."Contemporary PhysicsThis book is a revised and updated version of Introductory Quantum Physics and Relativity. Based on lectures given as part of the undergraduate degree programme at the University of Leeds, it has been extended in line with recent developments in the field. The book contains all the material required for quantum physics and relativity in the first three years of a traditional physics degree, in addition to more interesting and up-to-date extensions and applications which include quantum field theory, entanglement, and quantum information science. The second edition is unique as an undergraduate textbook as it combines quantum physics and relativity at an introductory level. It expounds the foundations of these two subjects in detail, but also illustrates how they can be combined. It discusses recent applications, but also exposes undergraduates to cutting-edge research topics, such as laser cooling, Bose–Einstein condensation, tunneling microscopes, lasers, nonlocality, and quantum teleportation.

This is a very frank and detailed account by a leading and very active mathematician of the past decades whose contributions have had an important impact in those fields where mathematics is now an integral part. It starts from his early childhood just after the First World War to his present-day positions as professor of mathematics, electrical engineering and medicine at the USC, which in itself reflects on the diversity of interests and experiences gained through the turbulent years when American mathematics and sciences established themselves on the forefront. The story traces the tortuous path Bellman followed from Brooklyn College; the University of Wisconsin to Princeton during the war years; more than a decade with the RAND Corporation; with frequent views of more than just the academic circles, including his experiences at Los Alamos on the A-bomb project.Bellman gives highly personalised views of key personalities in mathematics, physics and other areas, and his motivations and the forces that helped shape dynamic programming and other new areas which emerged as consequences of fruitful applications of mathematics.

"The book provides a concise, informative, comprehensive, and current overview of key issues in the field of science communication, the background of science communication, its theoretical bases, and its links to science communication practice. Especially the link between theory / research and practice is very well developed in the book and in the individual chapters. I think that is valuable for both readers new to the field of science communication, but also for those who identify with only one of these sides … it is indeed a comprehensive and concise overview, convincing in its aim to link theory, research, and practice and I will definitely use it for my lectures on science communication."JCOM – Journal of Science CommunicationA concise, coherent and easily readable textbook about the field of science communication, connecting the practice of science communicators with theory. In the book, recent trends and shifts in the field resonate, such as the transition from telling about science to interacting with the public and the importance of science communication in health and environmental communication. The chapters have been written by experts in their disciplines, coming from philosophy of science and communication studies to health communication and science journalism. Cases from around the world illustrate science communication in practice. The book provides a broad, up-to-date and coherent introduction to science communication for both, students of science communication and related fields, as well as professionals.

Peter Debye was a brilliant teacher and great communicator, who could get along with people from all layers of society. Born in The Netherlands, he studied in Germany and thereafter held teaching and research positions in Germany (Munich, Göttingen, Leipzig and Berlin), Switzerland (Zurich University and ETH), The Netherlands (Utrecht), and the USA (Cornell University). He was a pioneer in many different fields of chemistry and physics, such as the theory of strong electrolytes, the theory of molecular dipoles, low temperature physics, intermolecular forces, solid-state physics, X-ray analysis, molecular weight determination of polymers, and scattering studies with X-rays and light. As a result, he bridged in the first part of the 20th century the gap that existed between chemistry and physics and contributed to the emerging field of chemical physics. This book presents both an in-depth overview of Debye's many pathbreaking scientific achievements, and a full and balanced account of his professional life, against the background of major events in world history, such as the First and the Second World Wars. Until 1939 Debye lived and worked in Europe, and from 1940 to his death in 1966 in the USA. The story of his USA years is completely new, and has been written on the basis of Debye's personal archive. In the chapter the "Debye affair" — about his last two years in Nazi Germany — which attracted much publicity during 2006–2010, is described in detail and put in the larger context of Debye's life and character. This book is richly illustrated, with many rather unknown photographs.

"This volume fills a gap between books for lay readers and books for serious students of cosmology. An undergraduate student seeking a big picture understanding of cosmology and an easy introduction to the mathematics involved will find this book very useful. Each section concludes with a helpful summary in question-answer format. This is really useful in answering some questions and clarifying concepts that really do get addressed properly in the running prose format. Various lucid, simple graphs illustrate concepts throughout the text. A particularly refreshing aspect is the authors’ respect for the reader’s intelligence: they clearly admit where scientists still do not know the answers and at best can speculate."CHOICENamed an Outstanding Academic Title of 2019 by CHOICEThis book is about the history and the current state of the art in the exciting field of cosmology — the science about the Universe as a whole, which is guaranteed to attract the attention of a wide range of readers. It mostly aims to explain the main ideas of modern cosmology: the expanding Universe, its creation in a Big Bang, its evolution, characteristics, and structure, as well as issues — dark matter and dark energy, black holes and other exotic objects etc. It also answers most frequently asked questions about cosmology. How the Universe Works stands between a popular science book and a textbook, acting as a sort of a bridge across the great chasm separating popular science from true science. It can be also used as an introductory textbook for undergraduate students. It is also suitable for the non-experts in cosmology who wish to have an overview of the current state of the field. It is different from most popular science books because it avoids cutting corners in explanations and contains justification for various assumptions or estimations made in cosmology. It does not hide problems faced by modern cosmology as well as issues the community has no consensus about. It also does not try to pass hypotheses for established theories, which is not uncommon in scholarly articles.

The transformation towards electric mobility requires the highest quality mass production of battery cells. However, few research in battery cell engineering focus beyond new cell chemistries. As a consequence, there exists a huge gap between basic battery research and comparable scientific approaches to battery cell production. This handbook bridges the gap between basic electrochemical battery cell research and battery cell production approaches. To run lithium-ion battery gigafactories successfully and sustainably, high-quality battery cell production processes and systems are required. The Handbook on Smart Battery Cell Manufacturing provides a comprehensive and well-structured analysis of every aspect of the manufacturing process of smart battery cell, including upscaling battery cell production, accompanied by many instructive practical examples of the digitalization of battery products and manufacturing systems using an integrated life cycle perspective.

This book is mainly intended for first-year University students who undertake a basic abstract algebra course, as well as instructors. It contains the basic notions of abstract algebra through solved exercises as well as a "True or False" section in each chapter. Each chapter also contains an essential background section, which makes the book easier to use.

Modern Finance Theory bridges the gap between financial theory and empirical projects that require numerical estimations and computations. The approach is formal and concise, but uses relatively easy mathematics, and leads directly to implementable techniques for the students. This method has proved successful for finance courses with both theory elements and empirical problem sets, taught over many years by the author. The book uses more than 200 plots that help develop intuition for the results and equations that can be directly implemented in empirical projects. Appendices are also included to introduce matrix algebra, statistics, calculus and optimization. All key results are proved, but the proofs are not required for following the text.Topics covered in this book include investment analysis, CAPM and multifactor models, risk measures, return predictability, performance analysis, foreign exchange, and the pricing and hedging of bonds and options. This textbook is suitable for MA/MSc students studying finance courses.

Silicides were introduced into the technology of electronic devices some thirty years ago; since then, they have been continuously used to form both ohmic and rectifying contacts to silicon. Silicides are also important for other applications (thermoelectric devices and structural applications, such as jet engines), but it is not easy to find an updated reference containing both their basic properties, either chemical or physical, and the latest applications. The 16th Course of the International School of Solid State Physics, held in Erice (Italy) in the late spring of 1999, was intended to break artificial barriers between disciplines, and to gather people concerned with the properties and applications of silicides, regardless of the formal fields to which they belong, or of the practical goals they pursue. This book is therefore concerned with theory as well as applications, metallurgy as well as physics, and materials science as well as microelectronics.

In a world marked by turbulence, how are nations to survive and thrive? The answer is to build a great country. The book draws on lessons from countries around the world to offer five practical rules for national greatness: be clean and green, anticipate crisis, take care of the most vulnerable, be generous, and be geopolitically competent. Greatness is not only about glorious history, wealth, size, military power, or cities filled with shining towers. Leadership is decisive. A great country is built by choices, not by chance. For Laos to become a great country, leaders at all levels must move from slogans to execution: keep villages, roads, rivers, and public spaces clean; protect forests and watersheds; build anticipatory systems for climate, financial, and other shocks; lift poor families through learning, land, and labor; turn Lao generosity into organized international cooperation; and make Laos not only land-linked, but indispensable, through water, energy, tourism, logistics, and diplomacy. Followed seriously, this guide can help Laos and other nations become not only richer, but healthier, fairer, resilient, and more respected. If more countries choose this path, the world itself can become a more sustainable and peaceful place.

The volume of these proceedings is devoted to a wide variety of items, both in theory and experiment, of particle physics such as neutrino and astroparticle physics, tests of standard model and beyond, hadron physics, gravitation and cosmology, physics at the present and future accelerators.
