Chelation Therapy in the Treatment of Metal Intoxication presents a practical guide to the use of chelation therapy, from its basic chemistry, to available chelating antidotes, and the application of chelating agents. Several metals have long been known to be toxic to humans, and continue to pose great difficulty to treat. These challenges pose particular problems in industrial settings, with lead smelting known to be associated with hemopoietic alterations and paralyses, and the inhalation of mercury vapor in mercury mining being extremely detrimental to the central nervous system.
Clinical experience has demonstrated that acute and chronic human intoxications with a range of metals can be treated efficiently by administration of chelating agents. Chelation Therapy in the Treatment of Metal Intoxication describes the chemical and biological principles of chelation in the treatment of these toxic metal compounds, including new chelators such as meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) and D,L-2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS).
Presents all the current findings on the potential for chelation as a therapy for metal intoxication Presents practical guidelines for selecting the most appropriate chelating agent Includes coverage on radionuclide exposure and metal storage diseases Describes the chemical and biological principles of chelation in the treatment of toxic metal compoundsManagement of Hemostasis and Coagulopathies for Surgical and Critically Ill Patients

Management of Hemostasis and Coagulopathies for Surgical and Critically Ill Patients: An Evidence-Based Approach offers a concise guide to a sub-specialty of transfusion medicine from the clinical laboratory perspective. It focuses on the clinical tests that may be done during preoperative assessment, intraoperative, and postoperative assessment and management of surgical or critically ill patients. Management of hemostasis and coagulopathies is approached from an evidence-based perspective-the coagulation status of a patient according to the laboratory test results. Algorithms and decision-support software, designed by the authors, guide clinicians with an additional tool to base transfusion dosage on specific laboratory results, including the use of an artificial neural network for predicting more accurate blood use.
Chapters reflect the experience of all three authors who have successfully applied the algorithm for better patient management as well as decreased wastage of expensive blood products, from both the clinical laboratory/pathology and clinical medicine perspective. This book will appeal to a broad section of clinical laboratory and medical practitioners from hematopathology, to internal medicine, surgery, and anesthesiology. For hematopathologists and pathologists who are involved in laboratory medicine and transfusion medicine, this book will help them understand the proper utilization of blood products and how to avoid unnecessary waste and costs for the hospital. For general surgery practitioners, this book will provide practical guidelines on how to use blood products rationally for best medical practice. Internists will also gain insight from this book, learning which patients are at higher risk of bleeding during surgery so that they can alert their clinical colleagues.
Focuses on the clinical tests that may be done during preoperative assessment, intraoperative, and postoperative assessment and management Explains new decision-support software developed by the authors as a tool for the management of bleeding patients Reviews common coagulation based tests (indication and interpretation) that are used to assist in the management of bleeding patients Provides an overview of various blood products, pharmacotherapeutic agents, antiplatelets, and anticoagulants, their usage strategy, indications, and therapy goals880 kr

Linked by Blood: Hemophilia and AIDS recounts the factors responsible for the widespread infection of people with hemophilia by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-contaminated blood and offers a prescription for addressing the challenges of future viral epidemics. The book describes the impact of AIDS on people with hemophilia, their families, and caregivers.
The collection, processing, and distribution of blood in the early years of the HIV epidemic are described, including the failure of regulatory agencies to promulgate effective rules to safeguard the blood supply. The contributions of individuals and organizations that mitigated the epidemic are recognized. Linked by Blood presents recommendations for addressing the myriad medical, social, and economic challenges posed by blood-borne viral infections (AIDS, Ebola, MERS) that periodically sweep through large segments of our population.
Addresses the challenges of future viral epidemics Promotes understanding of the risks and benefits of blood transfusion Demystifies HIV/AIDS by explaining how the virus causes disease and is detected and treated Covers the factors that led to contamination of the blood supply and contributed to the AIDS epidemic Provides background information on hemophilia: who is affected, why they bleed, how it is treated, and what complications can occur Discusses the role of regulatory agencies in protecting the blood supply and ensuring the safety of blood and blood products Features new proposals to enhance blood product safety and regulate the prices of blood, drugs, and devices that are essential for human healthAtlas of Hematopathology
