“This gorgeous doorstop of a book … Seductive and serious — for the most discerning coffee tables.” — Edwin Heathcote, Financial Times.Sigurd Lewerentz (1885–1975) is one of the most highly revered – and also one of the most heavily mythologised – protagonists of modern European architecture. Arguably Sweden’s most distinguished modernist, he is more influential to other architects internationally today than he has been during his lifetime. Countless architecture lovers from around the world visit his still existent buildings. Stockholm’s woodland cemetery Skogskyrkogården, his most significant contribution to landscape design, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This authoritative new monograph on Sigurd Lewerentz is based on extensive research undertaken at ArkDes, Sweden’s national centre for architecture and design, where his archive and personal library are being kept. It features a wealth of drawings and sketches, designs for furniture and interiors, model photographs etc. from his estate, most of which published here for the first time, as well as with newly taken photographs of his realised buildings. Essays by leading experts explore Lewerentz’s life and work, his legacy and lasting significance from today’s perspective. This vast, beautifully designed book offers the most comprehensive survey to date of Lewerentz’s entire achievements in all fields of his manifold work.

Josef Frank, born 1885 in Baden near Vienna, ranks among Europe's most significant architects of the twentieth century. His designs for furniture and textiles also make him one of the eminent figures of modernist interior design. Born into a Jewish family, growing anti-Semitism forced him to emigrate in 1933. He first went to Sweden and in 1939 to the USA, returning to Sweden again in 1947, where he lived and worked until his death in 1967.Josef Frank - Spaces is the first comprehensive book on Frank's single-family houses. It explores the evolution of his designs over the years and investigates the influences that shaped his work: Adolf Loos's spatial plan concept, Le Corbusier's ideas, and Hermann Muthesius's seminal book The English House. It also looks at Frank's own architectural concepts of movement and stairs in residential buildings. The second part features six of Frank's houses in greater detail, including images and plans, and in descriptive texts that also interpret their characteristics. The selection comprises the villas Claëson and Wehtje in Falsterbo, Sweden, the villas Wien XIII and Beer in Vienna, the House MS in Los Angeles, and the unrealised Fantasy House 9 (Accidental House). A complete catalogue of Frank's single-family houses rounds out the book.

Totems and Other Essays brings together 14 texts by architect, historian, and critic Irénée Scalbert. Written between 1998 and 2025, they reflect nearly three decades of critical engagement with architecture and its cultural contexts. Ranging in length and register—from concise meditations to extended analytical essays—the collection captures the evolution of Scalbert’s thinking as a critic, teacher, and participant in architectural discourse.Organised thematically into sections on buildings, cities, lectures, and theory, Totems and Other Essays traces a loosely autobiographical arc.Earlier pieces echo Scalbert’s formative years in London during a period of architectural ferment marked by the work of James Stirling, Norman Foster, and Richard Rogers, as well as his close association with a generation of contemporaries including Tony Fretton, Adam Caruso and Peter St John, and Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald (6a architects). Later texts expand outward, both geographically and conceptually, as Scalbert brings a speculative and at times personal lens to questions of urbanism, nature, and meaning in contemporary architecture. The book culminates in Lives of a Critic, a postscript that offers candid thoughts on the vocation of architectural criticism in the 21st century.

This new book by Labics, one of Italy’s leading architectural firms, is devoted to the country’s architecture of public space. Squares, galleries, loggias, porticoes, and courtyards are the elements that characterise Italy's historic towns and cities — and that make the experience of these public spaces intense and attractive. Labics sets out to explore these enchanting spaces, to analyse their history and typologies, and to document and describe them through newly produced photographs, plans, and diagrams. They offer a taxonomy of solutions that, as a whole, forms a timeless theory for the design of public spaces. The Architecture of Public Space features a captivating collection of image material that visually decodes these characteristic core elements of Italian architecture and specifies their role in the definition of public space. The volume highlights the architectural solutions from the 13th to the 20th centuries that produce the particular spatial quality of these urban structures and sets out how they were originally established for and are continuing to be used by the people.

St Mark’s Church in Björkhagen, one of Stockholm’s southern districts, is one of Sigurd Lewerentz’s (1885-1975) key designs. But unlike Lewerentz’s other famous church, St Peter’s in Klippan, no book has been published to date that constitutes a fitting tribute to this masterpiece of brick brutalism. This opulent new building monograph now fills this gap. Some 300 new colour photographs and especially drawn explanatory plans, alongside essays by distinguished authorities on Lewerentz’s architecture, turn this book into a visual feast. It demonstrates the exquisitely atmospheric St Mark’s Church both as a standalone object and in the context of its surrounding urban landscape. Moreover, it picks out many details, such as the floor coverings, furnishings, lamps, banisters, the altar, and other liturgical features. The essays explore aspects of materiality and topics such as the church’s special acoustics and atmosphere in an attempt to reveal the secret of Sigurd Lewerentz’s church designs.

Architects, historians, and theorists have had a weird obsession with fascist architecture since postmodernism. Why? And who are the antifascist architects? What does antifascist architecture look like? Antifascist Architecture is the first attempt at creating a working definition of antifascist architecture after academia has spent decades fetishising fascist architecture.Brilliant scholarship has of course been presented about anti-colonial architecture, liberation architecture, and so forth. Yet antifascist architecture is an avenue that remains to be explored. This book does just that, offering a kaleidoscopic, peripatetic bricolage of architects who heroically aligned themselves with antifascist struggles, buildings made in the name of anti-fascism, and a call to arms for antifascist utopian futures. It is written for students and practitioners of architecture, but also activists and scholars in the social sciences who are interested in antifascist history, theory, and practice.

“The changing climate is no longer debatable here, it is this land’s unfeigned, monstrous reality,” says Dhaka-based architect Kashef Chowdhury. His firm URBANA, established in 1995, has produced an astonishingly diverse collection of works of divergent scales, typologies, and contexts and located in one of the meteorologically most complex and challenging regions in the world. A hospital introduced into an economy decimated by rising oceans, a shelter against cyclones in Bangladesh’s southern coastal region, projects for locations in the country’s north near the Himalaya mountains facing devouring waves of floods, and architectural interventions in one of the world’s densest metropolitan areas: URBANA’s designs are incisive critical responses to dissimilar issues and urgencies. They are all rooted in the belief that architecture can no longer be optical or sensational, but be built of philosophy and empathy for our increasingly fragile and shared ecological and human condition.Meditations in Entropy is the first-ever comprehensive monograph on the work of Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA. It features 16 of the firm’s designs in detail through photographs by acclaimed architectural photographer Hélène Binet and numerous plans, drawings, sketches, and further images. Perceptive essays are contributed by eminent critics and historians Kenneth Frampton, Robert McCarter, and William J R Curtis. The book is rounded-off with conversations between Chowdhury, Swiss architect Niklaus Graber, and the distinguished architectural historian Philip Ursprung that further explicate URBANA’s unique approach.

Since 2004, Wienerberger AG, the world’s largest manufacturer of bricks and other clay building materials, has biannually presented the International Brick Award as a scene for outstanding achievements in brick architecture. The 12th edition of this global master class in 2026 saw 894 submissions from 86 countries, more than ever before.Brick 26 features the 50 nominees and the winning designs in five categories, selected by an international jury of experts, through concise texts, atmospheric images, as well as site and floor plans, views, elevations, and sections. They impress with their exceptional architectural quality and demonstrate the creative and constructive versatility brick as a building material with nearly five millennia of unbroken tradition. The increasing reuse of historic bricks and the search for passive climate solutions characterise many of the submitted designs.Topical essays are contributed by distinguished practitioners and teachers of architecture, publicists, and historians, including Fabiola Büchele and Jeanne Autran-Edorh, Helena Glantz, Christian Heuchel, Renske van der Stoep, and Dávid Zubreczki.Brick 26 offers an inspiring global journey across contemporary brick architecture that is shaped by history, innovation, and creativity.

Gumshoe is new series of architectural books, introducing a new approach to the writing of architectural history. It returns the focus of architectural discourse back onto buildings, in a style and form that is original and scholarly but also easy and enjoyable to read. It emulates the detective novel – a form of writing beloved by many, but also one that has enjoyed a parallel academic life in disciplines and by writers as diverse as psychoanalysis (Sigmund Freud), film (Sigfried Kracauer), and art history (Carlo Ginzburg) — but, significantly, not yet by architecture. Each volume will investigate a singular building as if it were a mystery waiting to be solved.Written by distinguished French architectural critic and historian Françoise Fromonot, the first case — The House of Doctor Koolhaas — is about the Villa dall’Ava, a private residence in Saint-Cloud, a suburb of Paris. Fromonot brilliantly unpicks, explains and interprets the very first building completed by Rem Koolhaas, who is universally regarded as the world’s most celebrated architect, and his Rotterdam-based firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture.

Kazuo Shinohara’s (1925–2006) book Residential Architecture is considered one of the most significant pieces of writing on Japanese architecture of the late 20th century. First published in Japan in 1964 as Jûtaku kenchiku, the book was mandatory reading for generations of students of architecture in Japan, and has deeply influenced many of the best-known Japanese designers, such as Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, and others.Translated by architectural historian David B. Stewart (1942–2025) and architects Shin-ichi Okuyama and Kenichi Nakamura, Shinohara’s reflections on housing become available in English for the first time, making the multifaceted insights into the ideational fundamentals of his outstanding work accessible to a global audience. In the first of three chapters, Shinohara writes about traditional Japanese architecture, thus explaining the foundation of his theory and practice. This is followed by a description of his design method, which he further illustrates in the third part through the examples of his first seven designs for homes.

WOJR, Organization for Architecture, based in Cambridge, MA, is dedicated to the idea of architecture as a form of cultural production and works at the interface of art, architecture and urbanism. The House of Horns, a private residence at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains outside San Francisco, is the first major project that WOJR has realised and it represents the synthesis of core themes and ideas from the firm’s first 10 years of practice. This book documents the House of Horns in the form of a photographic narrative. It shows the building as a spatial and chronometric instrument, which manifests the central idea of the design. The images by architectural photographer Nick Dearden explore the house’s rooms and spaces with their characteristic horn-shaped openings that create relationships with the surroundings and enable the perception of the elapse of time through incident daylight. The texts investigate WOJR’s working methods, the House of Horn’s design process, and the discipline of architecture as a whole. Drawings, plans, sections, and elevations, as well as detailed information on the building, round off the beautiful, large-format volume.

Dirty Old River brings together 12 essays penned by British architect Tom Emerson over the past three decades. Written on very different occasions as contributions to books or articles in magazines, they explore a wide range of topics through the lens of architecture. The book’s title is borrowed from the British rock band The Kinks’ cult song 'Waterloo Sunset' to symbolise a journey through the interweaving of culture, imagination, and the built environment.Naturally, the architect Emerson writes about architecture: how it is designed, drawn, and built. Yet he also turns his attention to other, wider fields, from the transformation of materials to the nuances of human creativity, the explosive early works of his celebrated fellow architect Frank O. Gehry, and the intimate craftsmanship behind the literary spaces of French writer Georges Perec.Emerson’s unique approach to writing is often inspired by sideways glances and disciplines beyond architecture. He offers a new perspective on how things are made, why they take shape the way they do, and what these processes reveal about humanity.

Proximities: The Architecture of Jon Lott is an erudite exploration into the practice of PARA Project, a design firm based in Amenia, NY, and the philosophies of its founder Jon Lott. Lott's work, characterised by its openness to reconfiguration and its dialogue with context, is presented through five key projects: Haffenden House, Pioneertown House, Stump House, Brugge, and Lean-tos.The book probes the significance of proximity and approximation in Lott's work and emphasises how these elements facilitate a deeper engagement with the surroundings. Structured around thematic prompts such as "Readings/Reflections," "Proximities/Approximations," and "Diptychs/Doubles," it offers a multifaceted examination of Lott’s design approach, and also highlights the playful and improvisational aspects of Lott's methodology.Featuring theoretical discourse and practical insights, Proximities is both an architectural monograph and a philosophical inquiry into the nature of creating and experiencing space. It is essential reading for those interested in the intersections of architecture, philosophy, and environmental interaction. With contributions by Mark Lee, Jon Lott, Charles Shafaieh and Julie Cirelli.

Valerio Olgiati’s latest book is about the beauty of the very varied buildings designed by the Swiss architect, captured in colour photographs and plans. The 15 projects, around half of them realised since the publication of Olgiati’s most recent monograph in 2018, are featured in this exquisite small volume for the first time as finished buildings.Indoor and outdoor shots show Olgiati’s intuition for spectacular buildings and atmospheric interiors — from the museum for the UNESCO world cultural heritage site in Bahrain to the Céline flagship store in Miami, from the office building for Baloise Insurance’s headquarters in Basel to the bedroom of the French fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquière, from the visitor centre of the Swiss National Park to the atelier for the musician Linard Bardill in Scharans. They are presented through colour photographs, floor plans, and sections. The elegant book design follows the style of Olgiati’s highly successful previous book, The Images of Architects.

While most books on architecture focus on the architectural outcome itself, Architects on Dwelling takes a close look at how that outcome is created. To design any kind of dwelling, architects draw on both their reservoir of ideas as well as their own experiences as fellow inhabitants of such structures. This book explores how architects design the places we inhabit and how those places in turn inform the manner in which we live, in ways beyond lifestyle and personal taste. Through contributions by Stephen Hoey, Henry McKeown & Ian Alexander, James Mitchell, Stacey Philips, Christopher Platt, Adrian Stewart, and Miranda Webster—most of whom are Scotland-based practitioners as well as teachers in The Glasgow School of Art—it reveals the unique values and qualities that inform their design processes. In their essays, they focus mostly on one exemplary building, explaining how and why they design the way they do. Dick van Gameren, Simon Henley, and Graeme Hutton, distinguished experts and themselves architect-educators, place this work within an international context and provide insightful comment about what these design approaches inform us about contemporary design in Scotland. Complemented with a wide range of images, these essays both illuminate the architects’ motivations and inspirations and celebrate their featured works. Taken as a whole, Architects on Dwelling reminds us how profoundly the place we live in matters to our wellbeing, and of the social responsibility architects have in creating the built environment in general and dwellings in particular.

Typology, Review No. 2 of the new series Christ & Gantenbein Review, presents more than 150 buildings located in Rome, New York, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires that have been analysed by the chair of Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. This selective and subjective inventory of metropolitan and essentially anonymous 20th-century building production provides a basis for urban project creation. In this new book, the buildings are documented with floor plans, axonometric projections, recent photographs and key information. The theoretical essay by Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein and four texts by other authors explain the interactions between the contexts, especially the governing urban rule sets and the buildings, and show the potential for the design of a contemporary urban architecture.Text in English and German

Typology 2 follows up on the preceding and successful Typology, published in 2012. Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein together with their teaching staff and students at ETH Zurich expanded their research on building typology to four more metropolises, again in Europe, Latin America, and Asia: Paris, Delhi, Sao Paulo, and Athens. 180 buildings were analysed over the past two years to find inspiration and models that can be adapted for the local context of any given city. Each example is documented with an image, site and floor plans, axonometric projection, key data, and a brief description. An introduction and four essays on the interaction between various protagonists and in particular the effect of governing local building regulation again show the potential for contemporary urban architecture. The result is again a rich sourcebook of great practical value for students, lecturers and practitioners of architecture. Essays by the authors, and Anupam Bansal and Philippe Simon.

'I am most grateful for two things: that I was born in North Korea, and that I escaped from North Korea.'Yeonmi Park was not dreaming of freedom when she escaped from North Korea. She didn't even know what it meant to be free. More than ever, architecture is in need of provocation, a new path beyond the traditional notion that buildings must serve as vessels, or symbols of something outside themselves.Non-Referential Architecture is nothing less than a manifesto for a new architecture. It brings together two leading thinkers, architect Valerio Olgiati and theorist Markus Breitschmid, who have grappled with this problem since their first encounter in 2005. In a world that itself increasingly rejects ideologies of any kind, Olgiati and Breitschmid offer Non-Referential Architecture as a radical, new approach free from rigid ideologies. Non-referential buildings, they argue, are entities that are themselves meaningful outside a vocabulary of fixed symbols and images and their historical connotations. For more than a decade, Olgiati and Breitschmid's thinking has placed them at the forefront of architectural theory. Indispensable for understanding what the future might hold for architecture, Non-Referential Architecture will become a new classic. The book's first edition, published in May 2018 by Simonett & Baer, was sold-out within months. This revised and slightly redesigned new edition makes this key text available again.

In this exceptional book on the London based studio 6a architects, architecture critic Irénée Scalbert looks at the role of narrative, history, appropriation and craft in the work of Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald. The book traces an architectural approach avoiding style, signature, theory and even concept in favor of metis, an ancient form of intelligence combining "flair, wisdom, forethought, subtlety of mind, deception, resourcefulness, vigilance, opportunism, varied skills, and experience." Structured around notions of situation, intervention, making, comedy, bricolage, chance and anthropology, the text is mirrored in a visual essay of archive photographs, artworks, film stills and recent projects by the practice.6a architects were founded in London in 2001. The practice has developed a reputation for award winning contemporary art galleries, educational and residential projects in sensitive historic environments. Recent projects include the critically acclaimed extension to the South London Gallery (New London Architecture Award 2011 and Civic Trust Award Commendation 2012), Raven Row, contemporary art gallery in Spitalfields, east London (RIBA Award 2010) and the new Fashion Galleries at the V&A opened in May 2012 (nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2013). 6a architects won the Schelling Medal for architecture 2012.

Paulo Providência occupies a special place in contemporary Portuguese architecture. He is recognised by many as one of the best of the generation following Eduardo Souto de Moura. His work is concerned about interpretation of programmatic needs, relating architecture to specific cultural contexts. His buildings the vast majority of them located in Portugal are based on sound theoretical background, rooted in philosophical and anthropological research. This new book features seven of Providência's realised structures in striking duotone photographs taken by the Portuguese photographer Alberto Plácido. Each is documented as well with selected plans and key information. Five topical essays by Providência round out the first monograph in English on this eminent architect and theoretician.

Gumshoe is a new series of architectural books that introduces an original approach to the writing of architectural history. Emulating the detective novel, the focus is on actual buildings rather than on speculative designs and theories. The style and form is fresh and scholarly but also easy and enjoyable to read. In Mysteries of a Communist Cave, the second book in the Gumshoe series, Lytle Shaw conducts an investigation of Oscar Niemeyer’s building for the French Communist Party’s (PCF) central committee in Paris.Designed in 1965, just as party theorists began to rethink many bedrock assumptions about representation, Oscar Niemeyer’s PCF building is a microcosm of the shifting political and architectural landscape of the 1960s. It is also a literal Marxist structure that can thus help us concretely picture just exactly what Structuralist Marxism might have been. Shaw draws out the PCF’s language and context one element at a time and puts the elegant curtain-wall building with its cave-like assembly hall into revelatory dialogue with interlocutors in film, philosophy, anthropology, and politics.Perhaps the ultimate mystery of the communist cave is that its owners have not more often and more powerfully presented their landmark building as the vivid source of imagery it could be for the kind of world the PCF might like to construct.

Between 1924 and 1936, Austrian-born architect Josef Frank built five holiday homes on the Falsterbo Peninsula in southern Sweden. Conceived as summer houses for friends and relatives of Frank's Swedish wife, the Falsterbo Villas constitute a key part of Frank's architectural work and demonstrate the principles at the core of his housing designs. In 2016, Villa Carlsten, the smallest of the Falsterbo houses, underwent an extensive restoration. Published on the occasion of its completion, Josef Frank: Villa Carlsten is the first book to comprehensively document the building. As with all of Frank's housing designs, Villa Carlsten sees the architect paying special attention to the connection between interior and exterior, to the availability of daylight, and to inhabitants' movements through the building. A particular part of Villa Carlsten's charm is its scale, as everything is of slightly smaller dimensions than one would expect. Despite its intricate layout, however, Villa Carlsten is also one of Frank's most accessible homes, and the design is full of wit, combining comfort with modern refinement. Beautifully designed with seventy-five full-colour photographs by Mikael Olsson, who adeptly highlights the home's qualities and relationship with its surroundings, the book also includes an essay by Mikael Bergquist, who realised the renovation and places Villa Carlsten in context with the other Falsterbo Villas and Frank's broader work.

This book brings together five vacation homes in Sweden designed by Stockholm-based architect Mikael Bergquist. Realised over more than two decades, they are all located in the Swedish countryside and rooted in the Nordic tradition of timber construction and the simplicity and economy of Sweden’s historic farm buildings. Bergquist’s great attention to detail and careful choice of materials characterise these houses. They are united also by a close relationship to the surrounding landscape and nature, which is enhanced as an experience by the concepts of movement and the placement of passages between the outside and inside. The houses are documented with photographs as well as plans and sections. In his supplementary essay, Bergquist writes about the special position of working as an architect on the periphery of Europe. He draws a picture of Swedish architecture that is marked by what he calls “fruitful misunderstandings” of current movements, and one in which the poverty of the rural population has been a major factor in the evolution of the design and construction of dwellings.

Founded by Fredric Benesch and Katarina Lundeberg in 2009, Stockholm-based firm In Praise of Shadows Architecture engages in a wide range of projects of varied scales and typologies. This first monograph on their work features some 40 buildings and projects from the years 2009 to 2024. The selection includes small boathouses and garden pavilions, private homes, and housing developments, as well as retail spaces, schools, and library buildings. The ideas and designs of In Praise of Shadows Architecture are remarkable, revealed in buildings which share an elegant signature that manifests itself in the choice of materials, the shaping of these, and a focus on spatial experience. Many of them are timber constructions, as sustainability is a core part of their philosophy. Unusually for a group of architects working from Stockholm, Benesch and Lundeberg and their collaborators take a special interest in the famous architectural culture of the Swiss canton of Grisons.
