Rebellion and bitter civil war characterised Stephen’s protracted struggle with rival claimant Empress Matilda and her Angevin supporters over ‘nineteen long winters’ when, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, ‘Christ and his Saints slept’. This prose translation of twenty-four lays from the French Middle Ages brings to the general reader as well as to scholars a complement to the twelve well-known lays by Marie de France, the possible creator of the genre. These lays are mostly anonymous, and the majority, but by no means all of them, are, like Marie’s lays, centred on a love interest of some kind in a variety of settings. But, unlike Marie’s lays, their treatment varies from the courtly and sophisticated to the comic or the tragic, thereby illustrating the range of poems covered by the term lai in twelfth- and thirteenth-century France. A significant number of these lays, based in the courtly world, contain supernatural elements or magic objects that are fundamental to the story as it is related, and sometimes the heroes leave the real world to dwell forever in an otherworldly domain. Other lays have a more mundane feel to them and seem closer to the fabliau in tone. In one instance, the lay of Haveloc, the tale owes more to legendary history than to pure fantasy. Overall, this collection stakes a claim to make an important contribution to the Medieval French lay within the wider European tradition of the short story and the literature of love.

The extent to which Anglo-Saxon society was capable of large-scale transformations of the landscape is hotly disputed. This interdisciplinary book – embracing archaeological and historical sources – explores this important period in our landscape history and the extent to which buildings, settlements and field systems were laid out using sophisticated surveying techniques. In particular, recent research has found new and unexpected evidence for the construction of building complexes and settlements on geometrically precise grids, suggesting a revival of the techniques of the Roman land-surveyors (Agrimensores). Two units of measurement appear to have been used: the ‘short perch’ of 15 feet in central and eastern England, where most cases occur, and the ‘long perch’ of 18 feet at the small number of examples identified in Wessex. This technically advanced planning is evident during two periods: c.600–800, when it may have been a mostly monastic practice, and c.940–1020, when it appears to have been revived in a monastic context but then spread to a wider range of lay settlements.Planning in the Early Medieval Landscape is a completely new perspective on how villages and other settlement were formed. It combines map and field evidence with manuscript treatises on land-surveying to show that the methods described in the treatises were not just theoretical, but were put into practice. In doing so it reveals a major aspect of previously unrecognised early medieval technology.

Composed between c. 1150 and c. 1165, these romances create a bridge between classical tales (the Thèbes is based on the Thebaid of Statius, the Eneas on the Aeneid of Virgil) and the burgeoning vernacular romances, represented especially by Chrétien de Troyes. As a group, these three works are frequently known as the romances of antiquity (romans d’antiquité) and they introduce into French literature the dominant contemporary themes of chivalry and love. They are set against a feudal and courtly background in which themes such as war, prowess inheritance and the possession of land are crucial. As they adapt their Latin sources, these romances, especially the Eneas, exploit the works of Ovid, especially in the presentation of the theme of love, and they also make use of the principles of rhetorical composition as studied in the schools (both romances contain remarkable examples of descriptions of both people and objects).This is the first volume to contain two complete translations of the three romances of antiquity. How were the libraries of aristocratic women in the late French-speaking Middle Ages developed? Which reading trends and topics were embraced by female readers of the fifteenth century? Medieval and early modern recipes can be short and simple but sometimes are not – sometimes they work, and sometimes they do not. They can also be remarkably performative, imaginative, and playful. These essays explore recipes 1350-1600 from a range of perspectives and are unified by an interest in the complexity and richness of these texts.This volume is the first of its kind. Wisdom was highly valued in Old Norse society. We see its importance evidenced in the prominence of wisdom contests and gnomic poetry, as well as in its attribution to important and impressive figures, both mortal and supernatural, in the poetry and prose. This book takes a unique approach to the study of wisdom by conducting a literary study of Old Norse poetry guided by wisdom’s semantic field. As such, it includes texts that have otherwise been overlooked in wisdom studies to date. The book follows the adjectives fróðr, horskr, snotr, spakr, svinnr, vitr, and víss through the eddic and skaldic corpora, and addresses the representation of wisdom in pre- and post-conversion poetry, the differences and similarities in the words used for the wisdom of women and men, and how the lexicon of wisdom changes (or, indeed, how it does not) across the two poetic corpora. The study ultimately demonstrates the enlightening and unexpected results that a lexical-semantic approach to a poetic corpus can yield, and how these discoveries can inform our understanding of the culture and society in which that poetry flourished.

The history of French literature has long been inextricably linked to a sense of genealogical history rooted in France. This sense of history exposes and defends a desire to fully realize the homogeneity of modern nation-states in terms of language and race. The Invention of Frenchness contributes to the revision of this paradigm by considering how in the long fourteenth century, a period neglected in that context, francophone writers increasingly debated and negotiated in their works a complex sense of literary and cultural identity. Such identity was not necessarily rooted in France, nor was it simply genealogical.Beginning in the twelfth century, French literature focused on telling stories of how a knightly cast developed a common sense of transnational purpose and identity that they carried across Europe and the Mediterranean. Along the way, a growing desire to develop a sense of identity rooted in place became a preoccupation for francophone authors. Drawing on the Deleuzian notions of de- and re-territorialization, as well as that of the rhizome, this book shows that by the fourteenth century, French authors invented a rich and impactful idea of Frenchness that was both global and local.

Medieval and early modern recipes can be short and simple but sometimes are not – sometimes they work, and sometimes they do not. They can also be remarkably performative, imaginative, and playful. These essays explore recipes 1350-1600 from a range of perspectives and are unified by an interest in the complexity and richness of these texts.This volume is the first of its kind. It presents new critical perspectives on medieval and early modern recipes, moving beyond concerns with utility to reframe recipes as part of a dynamic textual and intellectual culture. Contributors build on the sustained scholarly interest in recipes and bring fresh approaches to them. The thirteen essays explore topics including medical, culinary and domestic recipes and charms, as well as how they relate more generally to, for instance, book history, art, astrology and social practices.Collectively, the essays reveal a distinctive book culture by exploring the material forms, literary and scribal practices of recipe books. Nature and the natural world were of central importance to the troubadours. Their songs feature flora, fauna, metals and minerals, and the seasons, and closely link the actions of loving and singing to springtime. Nature and the Material in the Music of the Troubadours offers a unique approach to the study of nature in troubadour song by reading the corpus in the context of conceptions of the natural world circulating in the twelfth century, and using this analytic frame to employ new methods for the analysis of medieval monophonic song.The book analyses the use of craft methods and terminologies, descriptions of animal voices and songs, and discussions of the physics of sound, placing songs by Jaufre Rudel, Marcabru, Raimon de Miraval, Peire Vidal, Arnaut Daniel, Peirol, and others in dialogue with artisan craft treatises, works of natural philosophy, and the parapoetic texts of the troubadour corpus to better understand how the troubadours conceived of their project of music-making. The use of specific language and concepts from these areas of the natural world sheds light on how the troubadours defined the idea of “song,” as well as demonstrating distinct effects on musical composition and sonic output.

Since their introduction to the British Isles after the Norman Conquest, rabbits have successfully colonised the English landscape. Yet the species was not initially wild but was instead reared within manmade warrens for its meat and fur in a form of animal husbandry that was surprisingly widespread and long-lived.Historical and archaeological approaches allow the spread of rabbits to be traced as more and more English locales hosted those warrens, the physical remains of which are still numerous across the country. This book provides a history and a comprehensive investigation of the types of structures associated with rabbit farming and details how warrens were managed, both on a day-to-day basis and in terms of how they were placed within the landscape.In contrast to their eventual fate as food for the poor, rabbits were initially bred for the wealthy few and it follows that rabbits would have been viewed differently by past societies. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, this volume explores the species’ historic status and discusses associations with conspicuous displays of wealth, Christian symbolism, and female sexuality. It also investigates the extent to which rabbits were simply viewed as destructive pests or as providing opportunities for poaching.
