This book examines the Ptolemaic temples of the island of Philae, in Upper Egypt. The temples were modified and extended during the course of the Ptolemaic dynasty and this detailed study presents the first full publication of the architectural development and relief decoration of this site. Separate chapters address the principles of decoration, the architectural development of the site, the attributes of the Pharaoh and deities, the evolution of the human figure in the reliefs and, finally, artisan work methods.A computer facilitated the recording of the 29 variables associated with each of the 824 offering scenes. This approach, adaptable to other sites, allowed the handling of an otherwise unmanageable amount of information. The computer database is printed in full, with tabulated information gathered from it. The 1274 drawings illustrate all the offerings, crowns, clothing and other attributes depicted in the relief decoration at Philae. The plates illustrate the architectural details, the work methods of the artisans and the changing rendering of the human figure during the course of the Ptolemaic dynasty.

À l'entrée de la tombe d'Ineni, l'un des piliers est décoré d'une représentation du domaine de ce notable. Le texte qui en décrit le jardin est complété d'un tableau divisé en 20 quadrats, refermant chacun un nom d'arbre suivi du nombre de spécimens observés. Témoignage unique sur la végétation de la région thébaine au Nouvel Empire, cette "liste" apparaît comme une énumération décousue de plantes devant permettre au défunt d'emporter dans l'au-delà l'image d'une exploitation agricole prospère, mais il se pourrait que, poursuivant un dessein plus ambitieux, le propriétaire de la tombe 81 l'ait élaborée selon une conception précise de sa survie et qu'elle forme un groupement cohérent tant sur le plan floristique que religieux.Pour tenter de répondre à cette question en se fondant sur les données de la botanique et de l'égyptologie, l'ouvrage analyse le document sous deux angles différents: les éléments de la liste sont d'abord considérés tels qu'Ineni les a répertoriés, puis examinés dans les combinaisons opérées par les Egyptiens au cours de leur histoire. L'auteur propose une nouvelle interprétation de l'inscription, dont la traduction s'enrichit des identifications de ksbt et im3.

This volume is a compilation of 28 contributions, predominantly in German, but also in English and French, and is dedicated to R. Kasser. To honour his 65th birthday, colleages and pupils have chosen 5 themes on coptology. The first is concerned with coptic art, archaeology and inscriptions. The second chapter shows some aspects of theology and church history. The third theme is concerned with the history of religions. The book also includes 6 articles on various linguistic aspects of coptic. A last chapter deals with some coptic manuscripts and editions in the field of theology and history of religions.

Faisant suite de la traduction des textes de Dendara I à IV, ce premier volume de commentaire, s'appuyant notamment sur ces inscriptions, est consacré au domaine essentiel que constituent les fêtes liturgiques. Une nouvelle traduction du calendrier, l'identification des hymnes gravés sur les portes des chapelles divines et la fonction des salles culturelles permettent de reconstituer le trajet et le déroulement des processions. Les quatres fêtes principales d'Hathor sont à l'honneur dans le pronaos: les grands textes illustrent les fêtes de l'ivresse (1er thot, 20 thot, 5 paophi) et l'union de la déesse avec Horus d'Edfou lors de la Nouvelle Lune d'epiphi (ces textes inédits sont ici intégralement publiés, traduits et commentés).

Im vorliegenden Sammelband werden Neuübersetzungen und zum Teil Erstpublikationen von Quellen vorgelegt, die im Kontext religionsgeschichtlich-theologischer Apokalyptikforschung von Bedeutung sind: die Demotische Chronik (Heinz Felber), das Lamm des Bokchoris (Heinz Josef Thissen), das Töpferorakel (Ludwig Koenen), der Traum des Nektanebos (Jörg-Dieter Gauger und Kim Ryholt), eine Passage aus den Ostraka des Hor und ein bislang unpublizierter Text aus dem Tebtynis-Tempelarchiv (Joachim Friedrich Quack). Dabei zeigte sich, daß die Texte nicht - wie oft postuliert - auf direktem Wege mit der antik-jüdischen Apokalyptik verbunden werden können, sondern vielmehr auf indirektem, indem sie eine Transformation kulturimmanenter Hoffnungsvorstellungen belegen, die durch die zeit-, geistes- und religionsgeschichtliche Situation im 3. und 2. Jh. v. Chr. ausgelöst wurde (u.a. Frage des geistigen Widerstandes).

The present volume treats of some Aramaic inscriptions of the first millenium B.C. and deals with the personal names appearing in these documents. The author has chosen those inscriptions which, in his opinion, needed to be submitted afresh to a serious philological, historical, or exegetical analysis. They form three well delimited groups. The Old Aramaic inscriptions of Bar-Hadad and of Zakkur, as well as the Sefire treaties, are dealt with at first (Chapters I-III). Chapters IV-VI concern a decree law in Aramaic and Aramaic documents on clay tablets from Assur and Tell Halaf. A short study of an Aramaic inscription from southern Palestine (Chapter VII) precedes the chapters devoted to inscriptions from Asia Minor (Chapters VIII-X), which have a funerary or a commemorative character. Special attention is given to proper names occurring in the texts studied and in related documents, as names are an important source for our knowledge of ancient Aramaic and of the religious ideas of the Aramaeans.

The reader is presented here with a study of the text of a Hebrew manuscript which is a medieval version of the Alexander Romance or the legendary history of Alexander the Great. The Hebrew text in this unique manuscript, known as MS London, is a translation of the Historia de Preliis Alexandri Magni, a widespread Latin version on the Alexander Romance. The Latin text was very useful for establishing an almost complete text of the London version and for identifying names and terms. A comparison of our text with other Hebrew sources on Alexander was of similar help in establishing a correct reading. The introduction which precedes the text and the English translation offers a survey of research into the history and development of Alexander traditions in Greek, Latin and Hebrew literature as well as a detailed analysis of the present text concerning its language, style and themes. This study is concluded by selective notes to the text and indices on personal and geographical names and foreign terms with their Latin equivalents.
