In an era marked by increasing globalization, international competition, digitalization, and social and cultural changes, higher education institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in establishing the knowledge-based economy of each country, which is perceived as its soft power. The need to explore and highlight the specificity of human resource management (HRM) practices in higher education institutions has become urgent and evident. This book provides new theoretical and practical insights into HRM in HEIs. A profound analysis of the global literature clearly exposes that human resource practices are often applied in academia as single solutions rather than as a systematic approach to planning, attracting, motivating, developing, and retaining scientists. The global trends in academia, such as the need for branding and positioning in higher education ranking systems, growing retention and brain circulation between academia and business, diversity in academia, and the digitalization of teaching, have resulted in challenges such as de-recruitment, academic burnout and ill-being, and technostress, which are also addressed in this book.

Nowadays, organisations are confronted with the imperative to enhance their organisational sustainability. This involves establishing an appropriate balance between the economic, ecological, and social aspects of an organisation's operations and striving to accomplish their economically viable goals that are both socially and environmentally responsible. By aligning the priorities and incorporating environmental, social, and economic factors into their operational strategies, organisations can generate value for themselves, while also making a positive impact on the current and future welfare of society and the environment. Noticeably, the advancement of organisational sustainability relies heavily on human capital management in the workplace.Today, more than ever, human capital is regarded as the foundation of organisations and ought to be treated as such. Given the pivotal role of human capital management for ensuring the long-term organisational sustainability of an organisation, emphasis should be placed on redefining leadership strategies and priorities, focusing on diversity and inclusion, cultivating talent, facilitating remote work, fostering employee engagement, promoting skill development for environmentally friendly practices, and prioritising job satisfaction and employee well-being.In response to the multi-faceted challenges of the third decade of the 21st century, this book provides an in-depth review of research avenues addressing present and future human capital development concerns in terms of enhancing organisation sustainability. The main aim of the book is to indicate the direction of demand for new competences regarding workplace human capital and identify synergies between its particular aspects with reference to contemporary human capital development. The monograph’s objectives include presenting tools that allow the analysis and development of human capital competences, pro-active and pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours, the coexistence of workers and AI in the organisation, as well as providing employee well-being, satisfaction, and commitment. Moreover, the book offers recommendations for contemporary responsible organisations that carry themselves towards the new economic and social order and sustainability.

Work Engagement and Employee Well-being highlights the vital role of psychosocial support in building and stimulating work engagement. It is a response to the growing phenomenon of weakened employee attachment and engagement instability. The authors underscore the importance of creating a friendly work environment, which accommodates a variety of employee needs and elicits positive emotions, thus fostering the well-being and complete engagement of employees. An in-depth literature review and empirical research conducted using combined qualitative and quantitative methods enabled the authors to present the issue from a wide range of theoretical perspectives. With a model acknowledging the multifaceted nature of work engagement and its association with well-being, the book introduces a selection of psychosocial means to enhance it. The analysis focuses on both systemic measures, that is, promoting a supportive organizational culture and protecting work–life balance, as well as a more individualized approach that not only facilitates the recognition and respect of employee needs but also helps cultivate their development. The book places emphasis on a transformational leadership style and a high level of emotional intelligence among managers, particularly their empathy. Further attention was paid to the various ways to support specific employee groups, such as remote workers and neurodivergent members of the workforce.

This book explores how HR technologies may mitigate the negative impacts of work-family conflicts on work engagement, a topic of increasing relevance in the digital era.Acknowledging the changes in gender stereotypes and its impact on work engagement, this book undertakes systematic literature reviews on gender stereotypes, work-family conflicts, work engagement and disruptive HR technologies to identify gaps in existing Human Resource Management research. Grounding on the theories such as social role theory, role-conflict theory and the job-demand resource mode, Priyashantha surveys over 600 Sri Lankan private sector executives and shows that changing gender stereotypes both enhance work engagement and intensify work–family conflict, while the perceived desirability of disruptive HR technologies raises engagement, it can amplify the negative impact of work–family conflict on work engagement when not matched by credible implementation. Practical implications of the research for organizations and HR practitioners are also discussed. This book is of interest to scholars of human resource management and organizational behaviour.
