This collection of essays offers a novel approach to the cultural and social history of Europe after the Second World War. In a shift of perspective, it does not conceive of the impressive economic and political stability of the postwar era as a quasi-natural return to previous patterns of societal development but approaches it as an attempt to establish 'normality' upon the lingering memories of experiencing violence on a hitherto unprecedented scale. It views the relationship of the violence of the 1940s to the apparent 'normality' and stability of the 1950s as a key to understanding the history of post-war Europe. While the history of post-war Germany naturally looms large in this collection, the essays deal with countries across Western and Central Europe, offer comparative perspectives on their subjects, and draw upon a wide range of primary and secondary source material.

Using a case study of this socially diverse province, this book refutes both the claim that the Bolshevik revolution was the prime cause of violence and the argument that the First World War’s all-encompassing “brutalization” doomed post-1918 German political life from the very beginning. The study thus contributes to a view of the Weimar Republic as a state in severe crisis but with alternatives to the Nazi takeover.From the introduction:After the phase of civil war, political violence assumed a distinctly limited form. It was no longer aimed at killing or wounding as many opponents as possible; instead, it served political parties and organizations as an instrument for exerting pressure in the struggle over control of the street. This development was driven by the Combat Leagues (Wehrverbände) of all political camps, who, with their uniforms and marches, injected militaristic elements into the political culture. However, since the violence they perpetrated followed a political and not a military logic, it was, as I will show, in principle controllable and did not pose a fundamental threat to the political order, not even in 1932, that particularly turbulent year before Hitler’s assumption of power.

The 20th century, declared at its start to be the "Century of the Child" by Swedish author Ellen Key, saw an unprecedented expansion of state activity in and expert knowledge on child-rearing on both sides of the Atlantic. Children were seen as a crucial national resource whose care could not be left to families alone. However, the exact scope and degree of state intervention and expert influence as well as the rights and roles of mothers and fathers remained subjects of heated debates throughout the century. While there is a growing scholarly interest in the history of childhood, research in the field remains focused on national narratives. This volume compares the impact of state intervention and expert influence on theories and practices of raising children in the U.S. and German Central Europe. In particular, the contributors focus on institutions such as kindergartens and schools where the private and the public spheres intersected, on notions of "race" and "ethnicity," "normality" and "deviance," and on the impact of wars and changes in political regimes. Dirk Schumann is a Professor of Modern History at Georg-August-University Gottingen.He was Deputy Director of the German Historical Institute Washington, D.C., from 2002 to 2007 and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Bielefeld. From 1999 to 2002 he taught as Visiting Professor at Emory University. He is the author of Political Violence in the Weimar Republic, 1918-1933: Fight for the Streets and Fear of Civil War (English edition, Berghahn Books, 2009) and has co-edited Life After Death (Cambridge University Press, 2003), Violence and Society after the First World War (first issue of Journal of Modern European History, 2003), and Between Mass Death and Individual Loss: The Place of the Dead in Twentieth-Century Germany (Berghahn Books, 2008).

Die Aufsätze des Sammelbandes untersuchen die Frage, ob das für Deutschland geltende Konzept einer "Generation Ebert", also einer zweiten Generation von Arbeiterführern, die sich von den Parteigründern in Herkunft, Denken und Handeln abgrenzen lässt, auf die europäische Ebene übertragen werden kann. Damit wird ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Erforschung des Demokratisierungsprozesses nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg geleistet, den diese Generation von Sozialdemokraten, aus der Systemopposition kommend, nun als politisch Verantwortliche entscheidend mitgestaltete. Insgesamt zeigen die Beiträge, dass eine generationelle Perspektive auf die Geschichte der Arbeiterbewegung in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 19. und der ersten Hälfte des 20. Die Beiträge des Bandes befassen sich mit (physischer wie anderer) Gewalt, die von Jugendlichen ausgeübt oder ihnen von Erwachsenen etwa in Schulen und Fürsorgeheimen zugefügt wurde. Sie zeigen, dass solche erfahrene wie diskursiv verarbeitete Gewalt nur dann angemessen verstanden werden kann, wenn sie in einen größeren gesellschaftlichen Kontext gestellt wird – sei es hinsichtlich der Frage nach Wehrhaftigkeit, moralisch angemessenem Verhalten oder nach Generationen- und Geschlechterverhältnissen. Zugleich wird erkennbar, dass es zwar über das 20. Jahrhundert hinweg grundsätzlich eine Tendenz zu erhöhter Sensibilisierung für Gewalt und zu ihrer negativen Bewertung gab, abgeschottete Räume mit starkem Autoritätsgefälle dabei aber eine bemerkenswerte Veränderungsresistenz aufwiesen.The contributions in this volume deal with violence (physical and other types of violence) performed by young adults or inflicted on them by adults, e. g. in schools and foster homes. The contributions show that such experienced and discursively processed violence can only be understood correctly, if it is placed in a larger social context – be it with regard to defensibility, morally appropriate behaviour or generational and gender relations. Despite a general tendency towards an increased awareness of violence and its negative evaluation throughout the 20th century, it becomes obvious that isolated spaces with strong hierarchies showed a remarkable resistance to change.

In der Mark Brandenburg befindet sich das ehemalige Frauenkloster Heiligengrabe mit der noch fast vollständig erhaltenen Klosteranlage, Klosterkirche und der Heiliggrabkapelle außerhalb der Anlage. Legenden zufolge wurde das Kloster am 'Grab' einer entwendeten Hostie gegründet, die auf wundersame Weise in den Händen ihres Diebes zu bluten begonnen habe. Direkt über diesem 'Grab' wurde die Heiliggrabkapelle errichtet, die als Wallfahrtsziel diente und der gesamten Anlage wie auch dem Ort ihren Namen gab. Im . Jahrhundert wurden die Kapelle und die Klausur gotisch umgebaut, wobei unter anderem der eingewölbte Kreuzgang entstand.
