Wir haben alle selbst zehn, zwölf, dreizehn Jahre oder länger als Schüler oder Schülerin am Unterricht teilgenommen. Wir kennen den Schülerjob aus eigener Anschauung nur zu gut. Was lässt sich darüber noch Neues sagen? In dieser unabweisbaren Bekanntheit des Untersuchungsgegenstandes liegt die größte Herausforderung für die vorliegenden Studien. Die Ethnographie eines so vertrauten Feldes, wie es der Schulunterricht darstellt, hat sich einem doppelten Gütekriterium zu stellen. Einerseits müssen die Leserin und der Leser sagen können: Ja, das stimmt, so habe ich es erlebt, das entspricht meiner Erf- rung – ein harter Test für die „Validität“ der Analysen. Andererseits muss die Lektüre die Reaktion hervorrufen: So habe ich das aber noch nicht gesehen – anderenfalls wären die Analysen überflüssig. Der Anspruch der in diesem Band präsentierten ethnographischen Studien muss es also sein, einen neuen Blick auf das (allzu) vertraute Geschehen des Unterrichtsalltages zu entwickeln. Dank Dieses Buch basiert auf einem Forschungsprojekt, das unter meiner Leitung von 2001 bis 2005 am Zentrum für Schulforschung und Fragen der Lehrerbildung (ZSL) der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg durchgeführt und von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) finanziert wurde. Das Projekt mit dem Titel „Jugendkultur in der Unterrichtssituation“ zielte auf die grundlegende ethnographische Erkundung, wie Jugendliche mit schulischem Unterricht um- hen, wie sie die situativen und interaktiven Anforderungen des Unterrichts ha- haben. Viele Personen waren an der Entstehung dieses Buches beteiligt. Ihnen möchte ich an dieser Stelle meinen Dank aussprechen.

In intensiver Feldforschung hat das DFG-Projekt „Individualisierung und Kontrolle“ drei kontrastiv gewählte Grundschulen im jahrgangsgemischten Unterricht beobachtet und nach dem Umgang mit Zeit, der Unterrichtsorganisation und den Überprüfungs- und Kontrollpraktiken gefragt.

Eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit richtet sich auf die Thematisierung von Gefahren sozialer Segregation, die Diversifizierungen und Präsentationen von „guter Schule“ als Angebot sowie den elterlichen Anspruch das Beste für das eigene Kind zu realisieren.

Der Band dokumentiert die facettenreiche Diskussion des Verhältnisses von erziehungswissenschaftlicher Ethnographie zu ihren Öffentlichkeiten in gegenstandstheoretischer, methodologischer und politischer Hinsicht.

Wie kann die aktuelle Kindheitsforschung fur das Nachdenken uber Schule genutzt werden? Und wie soll die Schule als Lebenswelt von Kindern erforscht werden? Diesen Fragen gehen ausgewiesene SchulforscherInnen und namhafte Kindheitsforscher nach. Es wird genauer nach dem Verhaltnis von Kindheits- und Schulforschung gefragt und nach Moglichkeiten wechselseitiger Bezugnahme gesucht.
