In addition to these excursions into the macabre, this volume reprints in full Stoker’s dark fantasy collection from 1882, Under the Sunset. Most readers know Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, the rational detective who epitomized deductive logic. Who could have guessed that Doyle also wrote some of the most wildly imaginative tales of horror and supernatural published in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries?

The Horror of the Heights & Other Strange Tales collects fourteen vintage stories, told as only a master of the Victorian terror tale can tell them. In these sophisticated fictions souls change bodies, monsters haunt the upper atmosphere, séances summon creatures from the astral plane, and mummies stalk the fog shrouded streets of London. This volume features the best of Doyle’s incomparable tales of the macabre, including:

Open this book and enter a world of gas-lit thrills and chills, where the most logical thing of all is to be scared.

Horror rides astride a shadowy steed and fantastic beings haunt daylit settings in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow & Other Macabre Tales, a collection of the best weird fiction of Washington Irving. Blending sly humor with supernatural thrills, these tales are among the best loved of all American literature. In the thirteen stories gathered for this volume, Irving evokes the colorful landscapes of his Hudson Valley hometown, and conjures characters and creatures from its historical past for a unique kind of weird tale that speaks directly to America’s experience as a fledgling nation fashioning its own folk heritage. Selections include:

This volume includes several of Irving’s fanciful retellings of classic continental folktales and legends. As colorful and imaginative as any of his American tales, they reveal Irving to have been one of the most creative writers to have bridged the European and American gothic traditions.

Horror hides behind an attractive face in The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde’s scandalous tale of a Victorian libertine and his life of evil excesses. Though Dorian’s hedonistic indulgences leave no blemish on his ageless features, the painted portrait imbued with his soul proves a living catalogue of corruption, revealing in every new line and lesion it develops the manifold sins he has committed. Desperate to hide the physical evidence of his unregenerate spirit, Dorian will stop at nothing to keep his picture’s existence a secret.

The Picture of Dorian Gray & Other Fantastic Tales collects four of Wilde’s tales of the macabre. Leavened with wit and written with the flare and élan that were the hallmarks of Wilde’s style, they rank among the most sophisticated literary fantasies of the nineteenth century.

Selections include:

This volume also includes six prose poems in which Wilde’s fanciful reflections on sin, redemption, and love confirm his reputation as one of his era’s ablest fantasists.

A Woman’s Book of Inspiration collects hundreds of quotations from women the world over. Gathered from writers and politicians, adventurers and musicians, activists and scientists, their words are a testament to women everywhere, the struggles they have had to overcome, and the tools they used to do so.

“It is interesting to contemplate an entangled bank, clothed with many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with various insects flitting about, with worms crawling through the damp earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so different from each other, and dependent on each other in so complex a manner, have all been produced by laws acting upon us.”

So concludes Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, the book whose publication in 1859 rocked the scientific world with its theory of evolution and challenged humankind’s prevailing notion of its place in the natural order. Controversial in its day, Darwin’s treatise introduced readers to such concepts as “the struggle for existence” and “natural selection,” and provided them with an understanding of the interdependence of species. The text of this volume is taken from the first edition, in which Darwin made his argument most forcefully.
