Modern plate tectonic theory, the development of earthquake prediction and the mitigation of earthquake hazards are based on the study of earthquakes during the twentieth century. Investigation of earthquakes over a much longer period, although in no way invalidating the global importance of plate tectonics, shows that patterns of seismic activity do change with time and that areas of intense seismic activity in the historical past are often gaps of earthquake activity today. This study of the historical seismicity of Iran over the last thirteen centuries not only shows this quite clearly but also reveals a long-term tectonic pattern which is different from that deduced from short-term observations. The historical data provides the basis for the development of earthquake prediction models and for long-term earthquake hazard assessment. This book will be of equal interest to earth scientists, seismologists, historical geographers and orientalists.

Marine phosphorites, the principal raw material for phosphatic fertilizers, do not occur uniformly through time and space. The origin of these unusual sedimentary rocks appears to be related mainly to marine biological productivity, often associated with upwelling currents during certain intervals of geological time. This book examines the environmental setting and resulting phosphorites which formed during the Miocene, one of the major and most recent phosphogenic periods throughout the geologic record. In addition, an oceanographic perspective is given by investigations of modern oceanic environments where phosphorites are presently forming. Together, the geologic and marine approaches provide a complete outlook on this important mineral resource. This book is the third of four reference volumes which together cover the achievements of the International Geological Correlation Programme Project 156 (Phosphorites) during the ten years of the project's existence.

Studies of the Jurassic period are greatly helped by the high degree of stratigraphic control provided by the ubiquitous ammonites. Although this work, originally publisjed in 1975, is not a study of stratigraphy as such, a short chapter on this topic is included to provide a framework for environmental interpretation. The main goal of this book is to review in detail the advances which existed at the time in the interpretation of Jurassic facies in the classical European and American deposits and to then apply this knowledge to illuminate more general topics such as the fluctuation in land/sea distribution and the nature of the Jurassic climate and biogeography. There is also an account of plate tectonics and igneous activity during the period. A comprehensive bibliography is provided, which includes the important stratigraphic literature published from 1956 to 1975.

This volume was originally published in 1983. It is concerned with the features of and the laws governing the occurrence of water in the interior of the Earth. Special attention is paid to the origin of the water in the interior of the Earth, the manner in which it moves and its changes of state. The laws which govern the distribution of groundwater are examined from the position of an understanding of the hydrogeological structure and the water-bearing systems. A scheme for the classification of groundwater is given based on the manner in which it is deposited. The deep-lying water and the subsurface water under the seas and oceans are examined together with the traditional subdivisions. The concluding sections are concerned with hydrogeothermics, the principles of hydrogeological zonation and the distribution of groundwater throughout the world. The basic viewpoints are illustrated by copious material from all over the world.

This book was originally published in 1970. Writing from the viewpoint of a geologist rather than a chemist, the author outlines the geologically important organic compounds and their reactions, as well as the fundamental analytical methods used in organic chemistry. He discusses the occurrence of organic residues in freshwater sediments and sedimentary rocks and evaluates both the importance of these residues in palaeoenvironmental and related problems and their role as biochemical fossils. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in non-marine organic geochemistry, together with anyone involved in the related areas of organic oceanography, limnology, petroleum geochemistry, coal and oil shale research and the space programme.

This book was first published in 1973. Its authors, David Krinsley and John Doornkamp, have here compiled a comprehensive catalogue of the many presences and absences found within the characteristics of different types of quartz grain sand. Their study was originally designed to fill those gaps which existed in the field of quartz grain surface texture research at the time. The focal point of Krinsley and Doornkamp's work is found in its numerous micrographs, selected specifically for their ability to demonstrate the many variations in the surface textures of quartz grain sand. Although much progress has been made in this field since the book's publication, it will still be of great interest to all researchers with an interest in this topic. The four-page bibliography provided by the authors also makes this book a useful reference point for all scholars wishing to explore the history and development of this fascinating discipline.

The papers within these volumes were compiled between late 1978 and early 1980, from data on tillites and tillite-like rocks. The research was conducted for the Pre-Pleistocene Tillite Project of the International Geological Correlation Programme, and was first published in volume form in 1981. In this substantial work, M. J. Hambrey and W. B. Harland have assembled essays by leaders in the field of pre-Pleistocene glacial research. The work's various chapters review in depth the glacial records of Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australasia, Europe, and North and South America. The second volume concludes with a fascinating editorial overview of the pre-Pleistocene glacial record of the Earth as a whole. The reader is also presented with a collection of readily accessible statistics, maps and charts. This set will be of particular use to scholars of sedimentology, paleoclimatic patterns, climate change and ice ages, and the time-correlation of rocks.

First published in 1980, this book shows the positions of the major continental areas during the past 560 million years as four series of computer-drawn maps. The maps have been drawn for the present day, 10 and 20 million years ago, then at 20-million-year intervals back to 240 million years, and finally at 40-million-year intervals to 560 million years ago. All the maps are based on quantitative geophysical or topographic information: paleomagnetic pole positions, ocean floor magnetic anomalies, and best fits of the continental margins. Cylindrical equidistant and Lambert equal-area polar projections are used, with a thirty-degree latitude-longitude grid. Many interesting problems in the Earth Sciences are global. These maps provide a framework on which a wide variety of data may be plotted. Problems in fields as widely separated as palenontology, stratigraphy, geochemistry and tectonics may usefully be displayed on these maps.

This textbook describes the physics of the plastic deformation of solids at high temperatures. It is directed at geologists or geophysicists interested in the high-temperature behaviour of crystals who wish to become acquainted with the methods of materials science in so far as they are useful to earth scientists. It explains the most important models and recent experimental results without losing the reader in the primary literature of materials science. In turn the book deals with the essential solid-state physics; thermodynamics and hydrostatics of creep; creep models and their applications in the geological sciences; diffusion creep; superplastic deformation and deformation enhanced by phase transformations. Five concluding chapters give experimental results for metals, ceramics and minerals. There are extensive bibliographies to aid further study.

The evolutionary origin and early history of the angiosperms (or flowering plants), which are the dominant land plants today, has remained an unsolved problem since the time of Darwin. It has been referred to since those days as an 'abominable mystery', because neither direct ancestor nor an agreed date could be determined. Mr Hughes argues that previous approaches, mostly through botanical theory, have been inadequate and misleading. He suggests that the date is about 110 million years ago (in the Cretaceous period) and there is a good chance of ancestors being found if the correct approach is adopted to the study of other fossil plants of that period. Moreover, the study of plant microfossils in the past twenty years has made feasible a fuller geological study of other fossils. When this book was first published in 1976, several reviewers saw it as a timely book on a controversial subject.

First published in 1977, this book shows the positions of the major continental areas during the past 220 million years as four series of computer-drawn maps. The maps have been drawn for the present day, 10 and 20 million years ago, then at 20-million-year intervals back to 220 million years. All the maps are based on quantitative geophysical or topographic information: paleomagnetic pole positions, ocean floor magnetic anomalies, and best fits of the continental margins. Mercator, north polar and south polar sterographic, and Lambert equal-area maps of each selected time interval are provided. Many interesting problems in the Earth Sciences are global; they need to be seen in a proper global setting. The maps provide such a framework on which a very wide range of geological information may be plotted. Problems in fields as widely separated as palenontology, stratigraphy, geochemistry and tectonics may usefully be displayed on these maps.

This 1985 book examines the origin of the present diversity of marine invertebrate animals. A brief review of the early stages in the history of life discusses the time-scale of the relevant geological periods alongside corresponding events in the evolutionary sequence. These views of the early history of life are then matched against the fossil record and conjectures drawn from the living fauna, enabling the author to attempt an overview of the early diversification of marine animal life. Transitions to the succeeding assemblages of shellbearing fossils in Palaeozoic rocks are discussed and a number of stratigraphic adjustments are suggested for the period in which evolutionary events had their greatest impact on oceans and marine rock strata. The need for an interdisciplinary approach to early evolution is emphasized.

This comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge of the biostratigraphy of marine plankton is the work of an international team of eighteen authors. It covers all the major fossil groups that can be used to date sediments and rocks in the time interval Late Mesozoic to Holocene. Altogether more than 3200 taxa are considered, almost all of which are illustrated and depicted on range charts, making the book a valuable work of reference in the earth sciences. For ease of reference by specialists interested in either calcareous or non-calcareous microfossils, the original work is now divided into two independent volumes. Volume I covers the calcareous microfossils and includes planktic foraminifers, calcareous nannofossils and calpionellids.

This unique survey describes the world's ancient phosphorite deposits on a scale never previously attempted. The International Geological Correlation Programme started Project 156, on world phosphate resources, in 1977. An international team of forty-six researchers describes in twenty-five chapters almost 100 Precambrian or Cambrian deposits of phosphate rock, extending through all continents except Antarctica. The total resources are large, but only a small fraction is minable at present. The data presented give a good understanding of the distribution, nature and origin of phosphate deposits. The book is an important contribution to the scientific understanding of phosphate deposits, as well as a valuable aid to the search for an exploitation of phosphates in many parts of the world.

This book is the second of four reference volumes which collectively describe the achievements of the International Geological Correlation Programme Project 156 (Phosphorites) during the ten years of the Project's existence. Volume 2 contains 93 chapters contributed by 111 researchers, dealing with most, if not all, of the major individual deposits or phosphate fields of the world, whether of igneous or sedimentary origin. Total resources of phosphate rock are extremely large, but are unequally distributed geographically and only a relatively small proportion can be mined on an economic scale at present. The text is arranged on a continental basis, with an introductory chapter for each continent summarising the distribution of resources within the geological timescale. This unique volume provides a good understanding of the mode of occurrence, geological setting and phosphogenesis of the world's phosphate resources. It forms an invaluable aid to the search for, and exploitation of, phosphate deposits in many countries.
