Neuroscientists often consider free will to be an illusion. Contrary to this hypothesis, the contributions to this volume show that recent developments in neuroscience can also support the existence of free will. Firstly, the possibility of intentional consciousness is studied. Secondly, Libet’s experiments are discussed from this new perspective. Current research claims loneliness is passively caused by external conditions: environmental, cultural, situational, and even chemical imbalances in the brain and hence avoidable. Buddhist Philosophy of Consciousness brings Buddhist voices to the study of consciousness. This book explores a variety of different Buddhist approaches to consciousness that developed out of the Buddhist theory of non-self. Topics taken up in these investigations include: how we are able to cognize our own cognitions; whether all conscious states involve conceptualization; whether distinct forms of cognition can operate simultaneously in a single mental stream; whether non-existent entities can serve as intentional objects; and does consciousness have an intrinsic nature, or can it only be characterized functionally? These questions have all featured in recent debates in consciousness studies. The answers that Buddhist philosophers developed to such questions are worth examining just because they may represent novel approaches to questions about consciousness.

This book discusses two general theories of human consciousness. The methodology, interdisciplinary and “history of ideas”-oriented, concentrates on two opposing theories, one humanistic and the other scientific. Leibniz's optimistic claim in the seventeenth century that this world was the best of all possible worlds is posed against nineteenth century Schopenhauer who argued pessimistically that it was the worst and that it was best not to survive. Against this background the book compares the current danger of a civil war in the United States of America as patterned along the same lines that engulfed the former Yugoslavia, thus demonstrating the insidious roots of that evil and its destructive engulfment and power. Ultimately, it questions whether these same dynamic forces are leading today's world to annihilation as countries threaten each other with nuclear arms and the age of pessimism has become entrenched.

A persistent challenge in philosophy is constructing an explicit link between mind and external reality. In this regard, this book introduces and examines two opposing philosophies. It scrutinizes Brandom's inferentialist solution, encompassinging his influential work Making It Explicit (1994) and his controversial interpretation of Hegel as a conceptual realist in A Spirit of Trust (2019). Constrastingly, it introduces Hegel’s relativist historicism, arguing that a robust epistemological framework does not necessitate an explicit link to mind-independent reality. By confining knowledge to its historical context, it prevents adherence to false beliefs, maintaining openness for truth to emerge one day.

Would it be possible to overcome the dualism of universalism and relativism that the story of the Tower of Babel portends, and modernity perpetuates? Between the dominant paradigms of the dualism of the classical and the vernacular, of universal grammar of Chomskian bio-linguistics and hermeneutic relativism of Steiner, of the ideal and ordinary language theories of Wittgensteinian socio-linguistics, this dichotomy plays itself out, again and again. Tracing the genealogy of the fundamental difference between the presuppositions of a grammar of pluralism and of universal grammar to the disagreement between Plato and Aristotle on the theory of forms, this book brings into focus the dramatic and crucial changes wrought in the liturgy of the Eucharist, in the 13th century, that consolidated Aristotelianism as the dominant regime of the Christian Church and laid the foundations of universal grammar both of the European modernity and of the modern world at large. It argues that it is the vernacular traditions however, that continually challenge this regime within different religious orthodoxies and in modernity with the reiteration and re-affirmation of the theory of the true name as the basis of a grammar of pluralism.
