A compendium of studies drawn from an international conference, this volume includes work on event history analysis. Researchers at four institutions convened, shared models of analysis and collected their findings for the first time. The studies included represent work done in the following organizations - the Max Planck Institute in West Germany, the US Social Science Research Council's Committee on Comparative Stratification, the Special Research Unit of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and MASO, an informal German working group on mathematical sociology.

The present and future of our society are shaped by an ever-increasing proportion of old and very old people. The Berlin Aging Study is one of the largest interdisciplinary efforts to explore old age and aging. Unique aspects of the Berlin Aging Study are the spectrum of scientific disciplines involved, the range of discipline-specific and interdisciplinary research topics, the focus on very old age (70 to over 100 years), and the empirical reference to a representative heterogenous urban population. The study's first cross-sectional findings on intellectual abilities, self and personality, social relationships, physical health, functional capacity, medical treatment, mental disorders such as depression and dementia, socioeconomic conditions, activities, everyday competence, subjective well-being, and gender differences are reported in depth in this book. The study was carried out in the context of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences study group on 'Aging and Social Development'. The authors primarily conduct their research at the Berlin Max Planck Institute for Human Development, the Free University of Berlin, and the Humboldt University, Berlin.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was the beginning of one of the most interesting natural experiments in recent history. The East German transition from a Communist state to part of the Federal Republic of Germany abruptly created a new social order as old institutions were abolished and new counterparts imported. This unique situation provides an exceptional opportunity to examine the central tenets of life course sociology. Examples include: survival rates of patients in medical studies, unemployment periods in economic studies, or the period of time it takes a criminal to break the law after his release in a criminological study. Die 'Kolner Zeitschrift fur Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie' ist seit fast 50 Jahren eine der fuhrenden Fachzeitschriften der Sozialwissenschaften. In diesem Band wird eine Auswahl bedeutender Aufsatze der vergangenen Jahre vorgelegt. In den Beitragen zu den Grundlagen der Soziologie, zu den Klassikern des Faches, zu historischen und empirischen Analysen und zur Stellung der Soziologie in der Gesellschaft werden noch einmal die grosse Themenvielfalt und das Reflexionsniveau dieser Zeitschrift vor Augen gefuhrt.

Die okonomischen, politischen und sozialen Umwalzungen der letzten Jahre stellen fur die Soziologie eine Herausforderung dar. Wie die Transformation sozialistischer Gesellschaften und die Probleme der Globalisierung der Wirtschaft zeigen, scheint die Fahigkeit der Soziologie begrenzt, sozialen Wandel theoretisch zu fassen, empirisch zu beschreiben und kausal zu erklaren. Es wird mithin die generelle Frage gestellt, in welchem Masse es der Soziologie gelingen kann, langerfristige Veranderungsprozesse fur Gesellschaften und gesellschaftliche Teilbereiche zu diagnostizieren, ihre Richtung vorherzusagen oder fur die Vergangenheit zu rekonstruieren. Der Sammelband analysiert die Ausbildungs- und Berufschancen von zwei Jahrgangen. Es werden aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse aus dem Max-Planck-Institut fur Bildungsforschung vorgestellt.

Comprehensive schooling and associated policies striving for a greater equality of educational opportunity have been at the centre of debate in many Western countries, since the 1950s. In this volume, the educational and social outcomes of several decades of comprehensive school reform in Sweden, Great Britain, France and the Federal Republic of Germany are examined by recognized social scientists from each of the countries concerned. Particular attention is given to the issue of social selectivity. The contributions, originally prepared for an international symposium organized by the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education in Berlin, are all based on original research. They have been thoroughly revised and updated, and, in some cases, even completely rewritten. This new edition represents the most recent state of research on the topic.
