6. Kontinuitet i utvecklingsarbetet över tid.

This volume presents novel research perspectives on the Swedish textile industry’s history, with a particular focus on its international connections. One of the book’s purposes is to cast new light on the transnational connectivity of the Swedish textile industry, particularly cotton textiles. Both cotton and textiles in general have played a key part in Swedish industrialisation according to both academic and popular historical narratives, yet the subject has been treated in national isolation despite the many ways the textile industry has been shaped by processes and circumstances that are international in scope. In this book, we try to look beyond the national borders and get some glimpses of how the Swedish textile industry is interwoven with international networks for dissemination of technology, know-how, consumer products and raw material – especially for the cotton textile production. Textile is a commodity which has been traded over long distances for centuries. However, the emergence of the industrial production of cotton represents something totally new. The global proliferation of affordable cotton was facilitated by an intricate network of international relations woven by the British Empire, which linked Swedish spinners and weavers, mill owners and consumers to an international system of chattel slavery and colonialism. In other words, the cotton textile industry linked Sweden to the world in brand-new ways.

This thesis studies the relationship between history and nationalism as expressed by the political parties the Sweden Democrats and the Danish People's Party. The study focuses on how the Sweden Democrats and the Danish People's Party convey historical narratives in their party magazines, SD-Kuriren and Dansk Folkeblad, respectively, and in central party documents. The narrative theory being implemented is based primarily on the ideas of Paul Ricœur, Jörn Rüsen and David Carr. More specifically, their ideas about how people use historical narratives to understand and make meaning of their existence. The importance of a story's content resonating with its recipients, that is being able to recognize and decode the intended meaning of the story, is discussed using nationalism theory and a history didactic framework, the latter with a focus on historical culture. The results show that the historical narratives deployed by the Sweden Democrats and the Danish People’s Party exist at different levels. On the one hand, there are overarching stories that appear when the main narrative is put together. On the other hand, there are smaller narratives that are both part of and relate to the main narratives in different ways. Four main themes can be read in the historical narratives of the Sweden Democrats and the Danish People's Party. These motifs follow the chronology of the main narratives and form the basis of the disposition of the thesis. They consist, in turn, of origin stories, conquests and defeats, friends and enemies, and welfare stories. The Sweden Democrats' and the Danish People's Party's approach to history is both legitimizing and purposeful. Based on a narrative grammar, guided by the nationalist core doctrine, interpretations of the past are filtered to become part of their meaning-making practices. In their historical narratives, key symbols of historical culture are used to point out the importance of acting in the present for the future. Through a set of narrative strategies, they use history to indicate what they believe is wrong in contemporary social development, and how this fault may be corrected.

Writing Class offers a compelling analysis of how contemporary Swedish literature represents precarious labour. Drawing on a wide range of literary forms—from novels and poetry to graphic narratives—it explores how authors respond to the rise of nonstandard employment and its social consequences. Engaging with key debates in literary and cultural theory, the book situates these texts within broader historical, political, and aesthetic frameworks. Special attention is given to how contemporary literature both engages with and reconfigures the tradition of Swedish working-class literature. A vital contribution to studies of class, labour, and literature, Writing Class rethinks the relationship between literature and social change, revealing its potential not only to deepen our understanding of labour-market precarity but also to challenge it.

The aim of this dissertation was to disclose and critically investigate the social meaning of the children's participation in family law proceedings. The research project was specifically delimited to the world of policy, to the world of professional social work, and first and foremost to the world of the child. Using an applied phenomenology, following Schiltz sociologically grounded phenomenology, the research design includes theoretical as well as qualitative studies. In relation to the world of the child, classical phenomenologists as well as contemporary, critical phenomenologists were guiding in the orientation towards research approach and analysis of the results. The doctoral dissertation is a compilation thesis that consist of four articles, in which three have been published in peer-review journals. The first article aimed at disclosing the meaning of children's participation within the world of professional social work in the situation of family law proceedings. The second article was a theoretical study into the sedimented meaning of children's participation within the world of policy. The third article focused on the possibility of listening to the social world of the child in relation to the conceptualization of children's participation. The fourth article was a qualitative study in which children and young adults' experiences of living through family law proceedings were investigated. The four studies show that the adult conceptualization of children's participation is not properly grounded in how participation as a social phenomenon is experienced within the world of the child. For instance, in relation to family law proceedings, the necessity of assessing children's age and maturity as a sedimented prerequisite to participation is at odds within the world of the child as they are already taking part of and acting on relational matters within the family. The findings suggests that an attunement to the social world of the child as well as acknowledging children's lived participation is important if children's formal rights to participate as well as being protected are to be taken seriously.

Parents with intellectual disabilities are seldomly heard in research about parenting. Based on the parents’ own voices, this thesis contributes to deepened knowledge about parenting among persons with intellectual disability. By listening to twenty-three parents, my purpose has been to illuminate how parents themselves understand their parenting. The study is mainly based on an interactionist perspective and focuses on how parenting is done. To deal with the stigmatizing perceptions and to ward off a perceived threat that the children may be taken from them, the parents use several strategies. These strategies function as a way of counteracting the questioning of their parenting, but above all the parents emphasize giving their children a good childhood. In general, the parents experience that their care practices work well when children’s needs are practical and arise in a routinized close to everyday reality. With higher demands on the ability to improvise and financial resources, care is perceived as a greater challenge. Experiences of being listened to and receiving support can counteract feelings of being made suspicious and can promote autonomy and security. But the support can also give rise to feelings of dependence. This is especially valid for women.

This anthology is the result of an international workshop with the aim to initiate new discussions and new research on cultural heritage – contested as well as uncontested. The workshop was held at the Department of Society, Culture and Identity at Malmö University, in October 2022. Contested heritage, sometimes also referred to as “dissonant heritage” or “difficult heritage” has been discussed, explored and studied by cultural heritage scholars from various disciplines over the last two decades. However, there is still limited knowledge about what contested or dissonant heritage is. How, when and by whom heritage can be contested and how it is related to or understood in relation to uncontested heritage are also unresolved questions. The contribution of this anthology thus falls at an intersection between the process-perspectives of critical heritage studies of cultural heritage, the empirical-historical studies of power and agency in social and cultural history (after the archival turn), and the conceptual fields that examine the use of history and history mediation. It rests firmly on the collective expertise drawn from historians and other scholars, at different stages of their careers, from researchers with theoretical proficiency as well as practical experience from cultural heritage work, both within and outside of traditional cultural heritage institutions. The result, if not a comprehensive rendering, is a range of multifaceted insights into research on why and how cultural heritage can be both contested and (un)contested.

The police are involved in almost all phases of a criminal investigation, starting with the crime itself and ending in court. The clearance rate is a core issue. If this rate is low or decreases, perpetrators will not be prosecuted and sentenced, and the police will be criticized. If this is to be rectified it is necessary to understand why it happens (causes). The aim of this study has been to investigate the prerequisites for the investigation of assault crimes and the police's ability to solve these crimes. The objective has been to produce knowledge for a follow-up model that can provide a more multifaceted picture of the police investigation results, beyond just reported preliminary investigation protocols (FUP).The data consist of 384 police reports regarding assaults that were assessed to be non-serious. In line with the aim of the study, the study employs a Swedish equivalent of the Evidence-Based Investigative Tool (EBIT) (McFadzien et al., 2020; Sherman, 2018).Rational decision theory (March, 1994) has been applied, along with theories focused on the way street bureaucracies manage and prioritize among an incessant influx of cases (Lipsky, 2010) and on various mechanisms that influence the approaches employed (Brodkin, 2011a; Jönsson, 2021). As a measure of the prerequisites for police investigations, a number of basic variables have been employed to reflect whether there is an identified victim, who then cooperates with the investigation, and an identifiable perpetrator. Other basic variables reflect whether there are witnesses, or surveillance cameras that may have captured the incident. As a measure of the police's investigative ability, the study employs variables focused on whether victims and witnesses have been interrogated and whether the police have checked/obtained footage from surveillance cameras. The results show that the conditions for investigating assault are not optimal. Only one third of cases meet all the specified requirements. In about 75 percent of these cases, the police had carried out the investigative measures that were possible. In the remaining investigations, the victims had not been interviewed, the police had not questioned witnesses, or they had not checked and retrieve surveillance footage. To some extent this might be explained by the fact that the reported crime was minor, that the case included information about a counter allegation, the crime would be difficult to prove, or a claim of self-defense difficult to disprove. The study’s results are in several respects neither unexpected nor remarkable. According to the Swedish Police’s national investigative strategy, high priority must be given to cases of domestic violence and only crimes that are expected to lead to prosecution should be investigated. However, there were also some surprising findings: The police succeeded in confirming or disproving assault in 29 percent of all reported non-serious assault crimes. Solving reported crimes is not always equivalent to prosecuting. Finally, the results indicate that a tool for predicting clearance could be utilized to reduce the workload of Principal Investigators. However, this would require more extensive investigative measures to be undertaken at the time the crime report is initially registered. The results show that the documentation on which decisions are based is in many cases insufficient for an assessment of whether or not a prosecution is likely, since it lacks information on the presence or absence of witnesses or surveillance cameras, and whether these substantiate the crime.

Exploring research and different reports indicates that the school situation for autistic students may be challenging from the view of professionals, parents, and autistic students themselves, which may lead to an inequitably educational situation concerning this group of students. As such, this thesis aims to explore if and how professionals’ participation in professional development enhances the quality of education for autistic students, including the perspectives of autistic students, their parents, and professionals in pre-and primary school. Four studies have been conducted, their findings have been synthesized narratively to fulfil the aim of the thesis and answer the research questions addressed. Three key elements of changes were identified: Attitudes, knowledge, and strategies to accommodate, the latter not as evident. Discrepancies were detected across participants and contexts. Furthermore, the professionals identified barriers to implementation, such as lack of resources, physical environment, and enabling factors, such as participation (collaborative aspects).

People are living longer today than ever before, and the number of older adults will increase exponentially over the next coming years. However, that does not necessarily mean that they are living healthier. An aging population presents many opportunities but also challenges in the public health care with a sharp increase in incidence of many diseases associated to the bone, teeth and joint systems. Orthopedic and dental implants commonly used mostly consist of metals, composites, polymers and ceramics. Titanium has been widely used in the orthopedic and dental field to replace or support mineralized structures. Titanium possesses good mechanical, physical and biologic properties. However, titanium has in the clinic presented some critical drawbacks. The modulus of elasticity is higher than that of bone which may cause stress shielding and bone resorption ultimately jeopardizing the implant retention. In addition, with rare cases of titanium allergy and patient desires for non-metallic treatments, alternatives to titanium are being studied. Furthermore, the radiopacity of titanium causes interference with the radiographic evaluation and the non-esthetic color may discolor the gingiva of thin biotypes. Recently, advanced polymeric implantable materials have been introduced into the medical field. Polyetherether ketone (PEEK) is widely used in various orthopedic applications, such as spine implants, joint replacements and fracture fixations. In dentistry, PEEK can be manufactured as prosthetic components, fixed and removable bridges and dentures. PEEK is a thermoplastic polymer with mechanical properties that are close to those of human bone, for example the elastic modulus. This will minimize the stress shielding upon loading and stress distribution. Besides, PEEK holds excellent biocompatibility with no toxic or mutagenic effects in vitro and in vivo. However, unmodified PEEK is biologically inert with limited pro-tein and cell adhesion to the surface. Therefore, improving the bio-activity of PEEK is a significant challenge and a prerequisite to possess all of its potentials as a biomaterial. There are currently 2 methods to improve the bioactivity of PEEK; surface modification and composite preparation. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is the most widely used material due to its biocompatibility and osteoconductive potential in association with biomaterials. There are many developed and evaluated methods to deposit HA on metallic implants, but the only commercially used one is plasma spraying. However, the technique has some severe disadvantages such as irregular coating thickness with deficient adherence to the implant surface. Clinical complications have been confirmed with inflammation caused by fragments of delaminated coating. To challenge these disadvantages, several alternative coating techniques have been introduced. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate a novel surface modification of bioactive hydroxyapatite deposited by a spincoating technique. The technique generates a crystalline, nanosized coating homogenously distributed over the implant surface. In particular, the thesis encompasses a comprehensive topographic analysis to evaluate the coating properties. In addition, the HAPEEK implant will be compared in vivo with an unmodified control with respect to its oste-oconductive and bioactive properties. In study I, the surface topography was characterized using interferometry (IFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) of the same types of implants that were evaluated in the experimental animal models. The chemical characterization before and after the coating procedure was evaluated with X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS). Mechanical testing of implants were completed in accordance with the tensile testing standard (ISO 527-2). Furthermore, the hydrophilic appearance after coating was estimated by measuring the contact angle. The results from the ma-terial characterization reveal a hydrophilic coating with a minimally rough surface which preserved its mechanical properties after the coating procedure. The chemical analysis revealed that only Ca, P, C and O were present at the surface of HA-PEEK with a proportion as that of human bone. In study I and IV, PEEK implants were implanted in the rabbit tibia and femur and retrieved after 3, 12 and 20 weeks of submerged heal-ing and subjected to biomechanical analysis using a removal torque device. The removal torque required to unscrew the implants was significantly higher for HA-PEEK after the 3 and 12 week retrieval time points. However, the absolute torque values were lower at 12 weeks compared to earlier time points, presumably caused by absence of primary stability and dissolution of the HA-coating. After 20 weeks of healing the absolute values were even lower than for the implants recovered at 3 and 12 weeks. However, the retention was still significantly increased for the HA-PEEK implants. In study II, III and IV, the osseointegration was histologically evaluated with respect to boneimplant contact (BIC) and bone area (BA) after the same healing time points as aforementioned. The performance of the HA-coating was most significant 3 weeks after implantation. However, after 12 and 20 weeks, the BIC turned out to be comparable between the groups. Furthermore, the implants implanted in femur were designed with an apical perforation to evalu-ate the osteoconductivity in terms of area of bone. After 3 and 12 weeks the results revealed a significant improvement on the HA-PEEK. However, after an extended healing period of 20 weeks, the unmodified implants were presenting comparable results as the HA-PEEK group. A more comprehensive description of the osseointegration can be achieved using computed microtomography. Three different diameters around the implant and inside the apical perforation were evaluated with respect to bone density and trabecular properties. However, there were no detectable differences between the PEEK and HA-PEEK. The outcome was limited to the resolution of X-rays. There was a minor contrast between resin and PEEK. The implant surface, particularly the thread edges are subjected to mechanical forces during implant placement and removal. The stability of the coating was evaluated in study II. The coating was wellpreserved in deformities of the surface, but on the flat edges of the threads there were signs of deformation and absence of HA crystals. This thesis demonstrated that a nanosized HA-coating can be pro-cessed using a spin-coating technique with nanostructures and suffi-cient adhesion to the substrate. Furthermore, the performance of the HA-coating was found to improve the surface osteoconductivity by increasing the level and speed of osseointegration. However, the effect was most prominent in the early stages of healing whereas the implants from the extended time points showed osteoconductive properties comparable to unmodified PEEK. In addition, the ability of HA-coating to improve bone fusion inside a perforation was the most clinical relevant outcome. Unmodified PEEK implants are today widely used in spine surgery and the present surface modifications may improve the clinical outcomes where a rapid bone formation is essential.

This thesis explores the everyday life of a group of teenage girls living in the city of Malmö. The analytical focus is on how the girls’ encounter, negotiate with, reproduce and embody unequal socio-spatial gender structures, class relations and processes of racialization in their every day lives’. The partaking girls are positioned in different ways in relation to class and race. As well as live in different areas of the town of Malmö. This enables the thesis to explore how these differences affect the every day lives of the girls in various ways. Focus groups, individual semi-structured interviews and interviews in pairs where conducted between 2012 and 2013. The girls were recruited from upper secondary schools and youth projects within the Municipality of Malmö. In total 22 girls from an age range of 16-19 years old partook in the study. The narratives show that the partaking girls live under different everyday conditions but how they are also faced with similar power structures. The girls’ bodily orientations are in different ways affected by structural boundaries that regulate the girls’ social and spatial everyday movement. Unequal gender structures materialises for example by means of boys controlling spaces, by the dispersal of degrading rumours and by the girls' negotiations with gendered norms. By exploring the girls’ economic positions, material differences are revealed. Girls with families who have strong financial positions are able to finance their everyday life, but they can also afford extra treats, for example: trips abroad, luxury goods, clothes or savings accounts. The analysis also shows how consumption practices of the girls, and their families, are influenced by ideals driven by social status and class. Consumer practices, taste and style of clothes as well as different spatial settings are used as classed distinction markers. Encounters of everyday racism are tightly interwoven with normative constructions of Swedishness and need to be understood in relation to a hierarchical process of racialization where whiteness is constructed as a norm. In the girls’ narratives encounters of everyday racism on the one hand appear unpredictable; on the other hand, racist encounters appear as expected in some rooms and environments. The girls’ narratives often confirm patterns of segregation in Malmö described in previous research. However, the narratives also present nuances. The girls’ experience of different spatial settings seems to be ambivalent and paradoxical. The girls seem aware of power structures and boundaries and develop their agency to challenge them. They in different ways renegotiate ideals, create alternatives and practice resistance towards categorizations, social ideals and power-bearing norms. The thesis has especially focused on the exploration of means of collective resistance as well as collective alternative orientations. These acts of collective agency for instance takes place through the means of narrating (talk back), sometimes they appear as alternative ways of being and sometimes as a way of creating collective friendly (home) spaces.

In public discourse on migration, people who migrate are often portrayed as deviating from the rest of the population. This is especially true for the group categorised as ‘unaccompanied’ children who are portrayed as homogeneous and not seldom with a common history. Such simplifications create a ‘single story’ that reduces people who migrate and their complex lives to stereotypes. This dissertation derives from a willingness to contest this single story through multiple stories by multiple storytellers. This is done by seeking to comprehend what borders do in the lives of eight youth with experience of migrating. The aim is thus to study what borders do and how the participants navigate, experience and challenge those borders at different stages of their lives. This study is based on ethnography among eight youth, who at some point have been categorised as ‘unaccompanied’ children in Sweden and other countries. The fieldwork was carried out during a period between 2013 and 2017 involving interviews and conversations with the participants. Borders are analysed from a multiperspectival standpoint, which means that borders are seen as practices of both material and symbolic divisions performed by different actors constituting control. Borders not only hinder or stop some while granting passage to others; they also construct people differently. Those who are repeatedly crossed by borders eventually become inhabitants of the borderlands. Influenced by feminist and postcolonial scholarship, this study calls for epistemic plurality by acknowledging different sources of knowledge which are placed in dialogue with the stories of the youth. Aspects of their lives before moving from their homes are considered equally important for their experience of borders as their lives in Europe. The central themes of the analysis are time, love, intimacy, hope and resistance. The multiple stories of the participants are contextualised in a broader narrative, where the individual acts and experiences are identified as closely interwoven with collective experiences. Furthermore, the multiplicity of borders is discussed in terms of where and how they are manifested and who they affect. In conclusion, the analysis contributes to deepening the understanding of migration, borders and agencies in the borderlands, and in so doing restores the complexities and humanities of the youth by challenging the single story.

The aim of this dissertation is to explore how two teachers communicate content knowledge and metalinguistic knowledge in the teaching of young second language learners. As a qualitative classroom study, it examines how two widely advocated forms of metaknowledge are used in instruction: metalinguistic knowledge, in particular genre knowledge, and reading strategies. Bernstein’s sociology of education theory is synthesized with systemic-function linguistic theory to explore how the participant teachers scaffold and place varying demands on the students. The central concept is pedagogic communication, which is defined as the way in which the teachers use language to communicate instructional content, build and uphold relations and organize information flows in teaching. The materials for the study have been generated through audio recordings, observations and collected teaching materials in school years 1 and 6. The school has a high percentage of second language learners and implements genre-based instruction. The empirical chapters focus on preparations for reading assignments, weekly instances of “sharing time” and a genre-based curriculum area about stories in school year one and a curriculum area about maps and population which integrates geography and Swedish as a second language in school year 6. An important finding is that strongly controlled classroom discourse was associated with introducing and reminding students of abstract concepts in the studied interaction, including metalinguistic and subject-related concepts. Conversely, weaker control tended to promote negotiation of everyday knowledge rather than disciplinary knowledge while also placing implicit demands on students’ participation in the discourse. The study also attends to less-researched features of classroom discourse and scaffolding, such as how the teachers showed solidarity and built engagement through interpersonal resources and managed the information flow through textual ones. A final important finding is that the explicit attention to metaknowledge, such as genre knowledge and knowledge about reading strategies, seemed to come at the expense of encounters with meaningful texts. Therefore, it is argued that such domains of metaknowledge should not become the main instructional content.

The use of dental implants for the rehabilitation of edentulous areas is an established treatment, showing high success rates. Primary stability is one of the pre-requisites for osseointegration, and it is ensured by the mechanical interlocking at the bone to implant interface. Current procedures have changed from the original protocols, towards a reduction of treatment time. Nowadays, the achievement of a great magnitude of primary stability is demanded in clinical practice, since there is a trend to load the implant immediately or in the early stages after implant insertion. Aiming on this, several modifications have been introduced, such as more aggressive implant design, modified surfaces and novel surgical techniques. Undersized drilling preparation is one of the most commonly adopted protocols during the implant surgery. This technique creates an osteotomy that is consistently smaller than the implant diameter, so that a tight interfacial contact and compression is created. Clinically this is perceived with an increase of the insertion torque value (ITV). Albeit commonly performed, several aspects of undersized drilling are still not well investigated. It was hypothesized that a great magnitude of compression at the implant insertion would generate tissue damage and may trigger a negative bone response during the healing time. This could lead to an impairment of bone material properties, a decrease of stability and marginal bone loss. Based on a clinical need, the general aim of this thesis was a more consistent understanding of the effects of an undersized drilling osteotomy.

Computed tomography has been used in dentistry as a complement to two-dimensional (2D) imaging since the 1980s. The advent of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) meant a significant development in dento-maxillofacial imaging, due to sharper images, less radiation, and a lower cost than the conventional multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT). However, CBCT still uses higher radiation doses and is more expensive for the patient than conventional 2D methods. CBCT is generally considered more accurate than intra-oral radiographs in diagnosing pathologies or conditions of interest in endodontics. Nevertheless, the diagnostic process is not only about evaluating radiographs, and it is not certain that the use of CBCT will provide a different chain of actions and ultimately result in a health benefit for the patient. There is thus a need to establish whether the added information of computed tomography has an impact on diagnosis and therapy choice in endodontics. Guidelines based on the best available evidence have been issued to assist clinicians in how to use CBCT. However, little is known about the decision process that drives dentists to request computed tomography, and there is a need for more insight into this process. The aims of this thesis were to assess the influence of CBCT in diagnosis and treatment choices, and to gain insight into dentists’ decision processes when requesting CBCT examinations.

Dessutom samlas fältanteckningar, elevtexter och olika undervisningsmaterial in.

I avhandlingen I skrivandets spår.
