The essays in this Festschrift honor James L. Kugel for his contribution to the field of biblical studies, in particular early biblical interpretation. The essays are organized in three roughly chronological categories. The first group treats some part of the Tanakh, ranging from the creation and Abraham stories of Genesis to the evolving conception of sacred writing in the prophetic literature. The second set of essays focuses chiefly on the literature of Second Temple Judaism, including Qumran and extra-biblical literature. The last group concerns the scriptural imagination at work in rabbinic literature, in Milton's Paradise Lost, in the anti-semitic work of Gerhard Kittel, up to the present in a treatment of Levinas and the Talmud.

The essays in this volume focus on the relationship between Josephus’ Judean and Jewish identity on the one hand, and his life and writings in the context of Flavian Rome on the other. From very different points of view the various contributions to this volume, which is the fruit of an international colloquium entitled ‘Josephus between Jerusalem and Rome’ held in the city of Rome in 2003, shed light on the complex cultural interplay in Josephus’ writings. Books and writing, according to Jacques Derrida, are always concerned with questions of life and death. Nowhere is this more true than regarding the heavenly book motif, which plays an important role in early Judeo-Christian literature, and particularly in apocalypses. This book identifies four sub-types of the motif—the books of life, deeds, fate, and action—and examines their development and function primarily in Jewish and Christian apocalypses. It argues that the overarching function of the motif is to signify life and death for those inscribed: earthly life and death in its early appearances and eternal destiny in later texts. The first full-length analysis of the heavenly book motif in English, this study highlights a vital element of the genre apocalypse.

Jeremiah’s Scriptures focuses on the composition of the biblical book of Jeremiah and its dynamic afterlife in ancient Jewish traditions. Jeremiah is an interpretive text that grew over centuries by means of extensive redactional activities on the part of its tradents. In addition to the books within the book of Jeremiah, other books associated with Jeremiah or Baruch were also generated. All the aforementioned texts constitute what we call “Jeremiah's Scriptures.” The papers and responses collected here approach Jeremiah’s scriptures from a variety of perspectives in biblical and ancient Jewish sub-fields. One of the authors' goals is to challenge the current fragmentation of the fields of theology, biblical studies, ancient Judaism. This volume focuses on Jeremiah and his legacy.

Two millennia ago, the Jewish priest-turned-general Flavius Josephus, captured by the emperor Vespasian in the middle of the Roman-Jewish War (66–70 CE), spent the last decades of his life in Rome writing several historiographical works in Greek. Josephus was eagerly read and used by Christian thinkers, but eventually his writings became the basis for the early-10th century Hebrew text called Sefer Yosippon, reintegrating Josephus into the Jewish tradition. This volume marks the first edited collection to be dedicated to the study of Josephus, Yosippon, and their reception histories. Consisting of critical inquiries into one or both of these texts and their afterlives, the essays in this volume pave the way for future research on the Josephan tradition in Greek, Latin, Hebrew and beyond.

The Enochic Theophany in the Book of the Watchers 1:1-9 evolved and grew as it was translated into, and transmitted in, new and changing socio-linguistic and socio-religious contexts. This study explores how the Enochic theophany evolved in its Aramaic, Greek, Ethiopic and Latin versions, and focuses on the hermeneutical and text-critical implications of these features of textual evolution and growth. These features reveal how the text was read, interpreted, and re-signified as it was translated and transmitted. This study proposes a holistic methodology for exploring textual evolution and growth in fragmentary texts and in fragmentary textual traditions, and for understanding the Enochic theophany as a participant in an ongoing Theophanic and Enochic-Noahic discourse.

This monograph examines Josephus’ depictions of foreign invasions of Jerusalem in his Antiquitates Judaicae. These include the invasions of Shishak, Sennacherib, Nebuchadnezzar, Alexander the Great, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, and Pompey the Great. In examining these narratives, the book approaches the Antiquitates Judaicae as an extended “prequel” or backstory to his earlier Bellum Judaicum, examining the ways in which these narratives foreshadow and invite comparisons with his prior account of the war with Rome. The book also explores these narratives within the literary context of the Antiquitates Judaicae as a whole and the ways Josephus’ perceived audience expectations may have influenced his depictions of these events.

For members of the sectarian Dead Sea Scrolls movement, participation in the group would have granted an individual special privileges, including present, unmediated access to otherworldly realities. This understanding of the present as a type of liminal space is rooted in the group’s constructions of time and space. Drawing on theories of liminality and anthropological research on religious consciousness, this study seeks to demonstrate how sectarian identity and ritual and liturgical practice might have cultivated an experience of present communion with divine beings that was also aspirational and aimed to achieve the human worshiper’s permanent incorporation into the heavenly realm.

Josephus’ Antiquities retell the entire Jewish history from the creation of the world to the outbreak of the Jewish War. But who makes this history? This study examines the literary construction of Moses, David, Judas Maccabee, and Agrippa I. through the lens of Roman exempla, showing that Josephus created these four Jewish protagonists in shape and form compatible with them, without turning the Jewish heroes into Romans. In this way Josephus proves not only the similarity of Jewish and Roman exemplary men, but he outdoes the Romans in their own categories of superiority, old age, and flawless virtuousness.Josephus’ Antiquitates erzählen die gesamte jüdische Geschichte von der Entstehung der Welt bis zum Ausbruch des Jüdischen Kriegs. Aber wer macht diese Geschichte aus? Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die literarische Charakterkonstruktion von Moses, David, Judas Makkabäus und Agrippa I. auf Basis römischer exempla und kann zeigen, dass Josephus die vier jüdischen Protagonisten römischen exempla gleichend konstruiert, ihnen aber „ihr“ Judentum belässt.
