As the Soviet threat to North America evolved in the early Cold War, the world was watching. What was the view from Ottawa? Watching the Bear begins to tell that story. Alan Barnes, a twenty-five-year veteran of the Canadian intelligence community, draws on recently declassified archival sources to offer a wholly new perspective on Canada's policies for the defence of North America from 1946 to 1964.

After the Second World War, Canada created an independent capacity to produce strategic intelligence assessments, and Canadian analysts worked with their American counterparts to prepare joint appraisals of the looming Soviet menace. Canadian and American conclusions often differed significantly, but Canada's success in negotiating the ensuing tensions was instrumental in ensuring that the two countries developed a common basis for defence planning.

By bringing little-known intelligence documentation to light, Watching the Bear makes a groundbreaking contribution to the history of Canadian intelligence, defence, and foreign relations.

A firm grounding in economics is integral to sound forest management, investment, policies, and practices. Forest Economics covers the basic economic concepts, principles, and constructs and shows how these are applied in private and public forestry decision making.

This comprehensive edition contains up-to-date data, examples, and applications of economic principles, along with literature and study questions, and additional valuable content in several key areas:

The advanced empirical presentation and keen attention to new developments in the field reflect the authors' decades of teaching experience in the United States and Canada. Forest Economics is quite simply indispensable.

Social theorists have argued that as the complexity of our ecosystems becomes more apparent, the line between nature and culture, human and nonhuman, and technology and bodies becomes less distinct. Yet contemporary masculinity studies has generally failed to incorporate this new way of thinking. In this penetrating analysis of the relationship between gender and nature, Steve Garlick proposes that masculinity is best understood as a technology that shapes both our engagement with the natural world and how we define freedom.

Extending the work of the Frankfurt School and Heidegger's critique of modern technology, The Nature of Masculinity draws on case studies and new materialist theories to argue that the essence of technology is not in mechanical devices but in a particular relationship to natural forces. Within this critical framework, masculinity is a technology of embodiment, and freedom does not lie in the domination of nature but rather in fostering a new relation to it.

In 1955, the controversial and innovative sexologist John Money first used the term "gender" in a way that we all now take for granted: to describe a human characteristic. Money's work broke new ground and gave currency to medical ideas about human sexuality. As an ardent advocate for sexual liberation, he became something of a fixture in the popular imagination.

This book cuts through Money's talent for polemic and self-promotion by digging into the substance of Money's theories and achievements. It offers, for the first time, a balanced and probing textual analysis of this pioneering scholar's writing to assess Money's profound impact on the debates and research on sexuality and gender that dominated the last half of the twentieth century. Through his analysis, Goldie recovers Money's brilliance and insight from simplistic dismissals of his work due to his involvement in the tragic David Reimer case, while never losing sight of his flaws.

Into the twenty-first century, millions of disabled people and people experiencing mental distress were segregated from the rest of society and confined to residential institutions. Deinstitutionalization – the closure of these sites and integration of former residents into the community – has become increasingly commonplace. But this project is unfinished. Sites of Conscience explores use of the concept of sites of conscience, which involves place-based memory activities such as walking tours, survivor-authored social histories, and performances and artistic works in or generated from sites of systemic suffering and injustice. These activities offer new ways to move forward from the unfinished deinstitutionalization project and its failures. Covering diverse national contexts, this volume proposes that acknowledging the memories and lived experiences of former residents – and keeping histories and social heritage of institutions alive rather than simply closing sites – holds the greatest potential for recognition, accountability, and action.

Early hunter/gatherer societies have traditionally been considered basically egalitarian in nature. This assumption, however, has been challenged by contemporary archaeological and anthropological research, which has demonstrated that many of these societies had complex social, economic, and political structures.

This volume considers two British Columbia Native communities – the Lillooet and Shuswap communities of Fountain and Pavilion – and traces their development into complex societies. The authors explore the relation between resource characteristics and hunter/gatherer adaptations and examine the use of fish, animal, and plant species, documenting their availability and the techniques used in their gathering, processing, and storing. The book also shows how cultural practices, such as raiding, potlatching, and stewardship of resources, can be explained from a cultural ecological point of view. An important contribution to the study of hunting and gathering cultures in the Northwest, this book is the most detailed examination of the subsistence base of a particular hunting and gathering group to date. Its exploration of the reasons why complex hunting and gathering societies emerge, as well as the ecological relationships between cultures and resources, will make an important contribution to the study of cultural ecology and contemporary archaeology.
