Författarna är alla verksamma forskare i humaniora. Här samlas historiker, litteraturvetare, religionshistoriker, musikvetare, språkvetare, konstvetare, antikvetare och arkeologer för att utforska livets och samhällets allvar. Forskarna studerar dödens symbolik i skiftande tider och pekar på hur rädsla för sjukdom och död alltid har varit aktuell. De visar hur könsnormer i högre grad begränsat kvinnor än män, hur det förflutna uttolkas genom manliga glasögon och vilka skeva uppfattningar som nutiden därför har. De framhåller också den oro som djupgående samhällsförändringar, krig och andra trauman har fört med sig. Biografiska perspektiv används för att komma nära det allvarliga i livet.
